latest furniture haul

First of all, thank you so much for the amazing feedback on our latest video project! Just like the “yellow dress and the dresser” video, it literally popped in my head and then happened so organically. I am very much someone who does their best work out of inspiration, not on demand! I imagine most of us are that way and we don’t feel as proud of things we created just because necessity or obligation dictated. Anyway, as I shared yesterday, I needed a piece of furniture to paint for the video. For the first time in a really long time, I was fresh out. So, my mom and I went to a few local antique and used furniture stores to find a piece. We found this pretty little dresser. It really was gorgeous and not one I would usually buy to paint, but I was on a time crunch,

second landscape dresser | part one

Do you remember our first landscape dresser? In case you don’t (or perhaps you missed it or you’re just joining us), here is a refresher… It was a collaboration between Kriste and I. After working on it, along with the murals and other hand painted landscape elements we used in our booth for the Lucketts Spring Market, I felt inspired to do more. I even bought a couple of canvases, which is pretty far out of my comfort zone! Anyway, I was itching to do some painting and, since I didn’t have any new pieces to work on, I decided to paint the dresser that originally got a makeover just with Hemp Oil. I have to tell you, I loved that dresser wearing just Hemp Oil, but it didn’t sell at Lucketts and it was just hanging out in the studio, so… Yep. That’s what happens when things hang out

antique haul | 6.27.16

Last week, I acquired a few fun things. One of my “pickers” brought me a load of ironstone (plus I brought in some pieces from my house) and I found some goodies at a local antique shop. Here’s a video showing everything… This is the small blue & white pitcher I mentioned in the video… Isn’t it so sweet? After studying it a bit, I thought it looked familiar. I matched the hallmark on the bottom with some plates and bowls I have… …and they are a match! So, I’m keeping that piece! I even found the matching sugar jar on Etsy and snapped it up. I also picked up a pretty stoneware bowl… …a boatload of bakelite flatware.. …a small, antique chandelier with all of the crystals… …a couple of shaving mirrors… …and a teeny, tiny dress form. I named her Liz Marie, because, well, Liz Marie is teeny, tiny. It’s

cross-stitch patterns | B & I

Before I get to the cross-stitch patterns, I wanted to share that I actually scheduled some milk paint workshops at the studio! I get asked about it a lot, so I finally pinned myself down and put some on the calendar. Friday, July 15, 2016, is a Milk Paint 101 Workshop from 10:00 am – 12:30 pm. In the past, my 101 workshops have been learning to use the products on sample boards, but I’ve mixed it up, so we’ll work on three small projects for you to take and use in your home or give as gifts. If you’ve been reading my posts over the past few weeks, you know that I have a new-found love for baskets. I collected a lot of them to sell at Lucketts and I enjoyed using them as props around the studio. During one of my shopping trips, though, I bought a basket for myself. It’s this beautiful, antique splint basket with chippy white paint… Splint baskets are made out of thin wood strips, so they are lot sturdier than baskets made from woven reeds, rushing, branches, etc. I haven’t seen one before with chippy white paint, though, and that’s what drew me to it. It has just the right balance of chipping paint with the wood peeking through. And how about that pie safe?! I mentioned it in a post a few weeks ago, but I haven’t shared much about it. simple pillow tutorial (with piping)

I’ve shared a few pillow tutorials on my blog over the years, but it’s been a while, so I decided to take some pictures as I was making a couple of pillows today and share a tutorial for how to sew a simple pillow with a piping edge. There is a video tutorial towards the bottom of this post if that’s helpful. Since I shuffled things around in my family room a few months ago, I’ve needed (well, wanted) to make a couple of pillows. I finally got the push I needed when a sweet reader sent me a beautiful antique woven coverlet. I just about squealed when I opened the package. I have found that there is an ebb and flow to the things that catch my eye. Of course, there are constants, ironstone being the most obvious, but there are pieces that I have found a new or renewed interest in… baskets Baskets is one that has been the most surprising to me. I haven’t paid much attention to baskets and was even slightly annoyed with the stacks of baskets that seem to be everywhere in secondhand shopping. But, over the past few months, I have changed my tune. These utilitarian gems bring so much texture to a space along with stylish storage. What I look for in a basket… The older the better. That’s the case with a lot of things for me, but I’m looking for pieces with a nice patina and age to them. I especially love old splint baskets. Market-style or laundry-style baskets. a harvest of lavender

A few years ago, I planted some lavender on either side of the steps leading to the front door of our house. It was sort of a whim, but I love how it’s grown over the years and the scent and color it adds to the entrance. I’m a homebody, anyway, so I love walking up those steps to the front door, but the lavender is an extra perk. It was getting a bit unruly this year, though, and I was encouraged to cut it back by people who know a lot more about gardening than I do. I sort of hated to cut it, but I was told it’s best for the plant and prevents them from becoming woody. So, I went out in the cooler temperatures of the evening, armed with an antique apple basket and new pair of shears, to trim back the lavender. I didn’t realize how much
