fall table & buffet preview

As I shared the other day, I could do tablescapes all day long.  Other than furniture, it’s probably one of my favorite parts of my job.  I think it’s probably because I love dishes, serving pieces, ironstone, silverware, etc.  I have a lot of it and, while we do use some of it everyday, I have enough to feed an army.  So, I love when I get to pull it out and “play” with it.  It’s sort of like a big-girl dollhouse moment. I set up this particular tablescape to shoot an HGTV.com tutorial for a succulent pumpkin.  I wanted to actually shoot it as a centerpiece, so I set a table around the juxtaposition between the springy feel of the green succulents and the fall feel of the pumpkins. I started with a blue and white checkered piece of fabric as a tablecloth, which wouldn’t be an immediate choice

autumn table & more glittered pumpkins

A couple of weeks ago, I showed a more traditional, spooky black & orange fall table with black glass glitter on pumpkins, crows, pinecones and a paper bat bunting.  In this setting, I wanted to show glittered pumpkins in a totally different way, so Kriste & I set up a rustic autumn table with a little glam element in the form of gold (14 Karat) and silver (Tiara) glass glittered pumpkins. Kriste took the lead on glittering these pumpkins and opted to glitter the stems and a “starburst” sort of pattern on the top of each pumpkin.  I think they turned out beautifully.  (The glitter is adhered with Elmer’s school glue.) We used live pumpkins, but this would be perfect for artificial pumpkins as well…probably even better since they can be used year after year.  We also decided to try one with a mix of 14 Karat & Tiara glitter, which looked lovely.

black glittered pumpkins & more

Today in the studio, Kriste and I worked creating two very different Halloween/fall tables.  In the one I’m showing today, we went with a black/orange/spooky classic Halloween theme.  Neither of us are big on decorating for Halloween, but this was so much fun to put together and we both love how it turned out. We featured Flapper Black MMS GGG (Miss Mustard Seed’s German Glass Glitter) on several simple projects on this table.  We glittered live and wooden pumpkins (found at Target), some clearance plastic crows, pine cones and paper bats that we made into bunting.  We made them with the same glue & glitter technique most people learn in elementary school. Pick something to glitter… …have some glitter at the ready and work over some paper or a container, so the glitter can be reused. Brush on a white all-purpose school glue… …and immediately sprinkle the glitter on. Allow

minimal fall decorating

I’ve share this before, but I thought it was worth sharing again.  I’m not big on decorating for each season.  I think in the world of Pinterest and blogs, it’s easy to feel like you have to do a bunch of projects and crafts for birthdays, parties and especially during the holiday season.  As I’ve been immersed in that world and holidays seem to blur into one another as I’m dying Easter eggs in October and buying Christmas trees in April, I’ve gotten a little holidayed-out.  So, for fall, I don’t put out a bunch of wreaths, hay stacks, cornucopias and scarecrows.  I just sprinkle a few pumpkins around the house and that’s that. Of course, I’m partial to the white and pale blue varieties…    After focusing on the studio for a few weeks, I did a few things in my home.  I just moved some pictures and accessories around

Milk Paint Pumpkins

I received a lot of wonderful comments about my blue pumpkins and squash, but several people shared that they couldn’t find them in their area. Well, that gave me an idea… I’ve been itching to play with milk paint since attending the retailer training earlier this week, so why not test some custom mixed colors on a few pumpkins?  I know painting pumpkins isn’t anything new, but I don’t know if I’ve seen milk paint pumpkins out and about.  Given the natural variation in the pigmentation of the paint, I figured it would mimic the variations in the skin of blue pumpkins nicely. So, I started out with mini white pumpkins… …and mixed up six different custom colors.  They’re all variations made with Grain Sack, Boxwood, Shutter Gray, Eulalie’s Sky, Trophy and Kitchen Scale. I have found that these little ironstone mugs are my favorite to use for small paint

Fall Decorating Update

Last time we checked in on my fall decorating, I had plopped a pumpkin in a dough bowl and called it a day. A couple of days later, I went to the farmer’s market up the road for some apples and found the prettiest blue hubbard squash and a fresh kale plant.  Neither were very expensive, so I picked them up.  Then, on the way from my my shopping trip on Thursday, I passed a huge wagon overflowing with beautiful varieties of pumpkins, including the blue Cinderella’s, so I picked up two of those and some mini white pumpkins for $12. I mixed in some pine cones and dried artichokes from my basement to round things out. So, now I have an arrangement in the dough bowl… …and a vignette on the dresser in the family room…     (I love how it looks like these two are nestling up

fall & thanksgiving inspiration

The new issue of Cottages and Bungalows has hit newsstands, so I thought I would share a few pictures from my DIY Essentials column.  (Table settings are one of my favorites to photograph…) This month’s issue shares a tutorial on how to make an over sized chalkboard with a chunky frame.   (The piece is now for sale at Lucketts.  I wanted to keep it, but it didn’t fit my requirement of having a perfect place for it.  Bummer.)    I also have several new Thanksgiving/Fall galleries and tutorials available on HGTV.com, including a fall arrangement gallery…   …stenciled napkins… (Thanks so much to Laura of Maison de Stencils for making this custom stencil for me!) hand painted plates… custom trimmed table cloth…   and ideas for a Kid’s Thanksgiving Table.  I hope these projects and pictures get those wheels turning for fall decor.  Tomorrow, Mini and I are going down to
