Ironstone & an Ektorp Sofa Review

I mentioned I got a new haul of ironstone last week.  Well, here it is… Not only is it a lot of ironstone, but a lot of really great pieces including this four piece tureen set with platter, lid and ladle. The details on the handles are really pretty.  I love this piece, but I already have a few tureens, so I’ll be selling it. Another stunning piece is this large compote.  It’s chippy, but I’m cool with that. …some sugar jars… …lidded casseroles, a couple of butter dishes, butter pats, pitchers, small plates… …platters… …and a huge footed bowl (behind the pitcher.)  Lots of ironstone goodness.  I need to figure out what I want to keep and put a collection together to sell.  I will list some in my online shop, but let me know if there’s something you’re interested in.  I am a little nervous about shipping ironstone,

Stop the World & Ironstone Mugs

It’s one of those times in my life when I wish I could just stop the world for about a week, so I can catch up on things that have been put on the back burner for days, weeks, months and even years.   I am on a tear to get things done. I have been organizing my way through the house and am making some real progress, so that’s been encouraging.  I’ve also been getting caught up on e-mail, insurance stuff, paperwork, cleaning my kitchen floor and other not-at-all fun things like that.  It’s slow, but steady, but I’m really ready to have my computer back (the drive died and is being replaced) and get to working on furniture painting and upholstery and creating things. Before that can happen, we do need to be able to…you know…find stuff…and walk in the workshop without having to high-step around and watch out for

Latest Ironstone & Wooden Cheese Board

I have a bad habit.  Ironstone is my very favorite thing to collect and I’m much better at buying it than I am selling it.  Now, if you have shopped my tent at the Lucketts Market, you know that I do get rid of a lot, but I keep a lot, too.  I recently hit one of my favorite local shops at just the right time and bought a bunch of ironstone.  I’m selling a few pieces, but these are the ones I’m keeping… I can’t resist a pretty tureen or casserole, especially one that”s different from any I currently have… …and I sort of have a thing for sugar jars. I may have kept a pitcher, too.  Yes.  I did.  And a couple of lids. Did you notice the cool wooden pedestal cheese board under the tureen?  That’s actually going to be featured on Decor Steals soon, so keep

Latest Ironstone Finds

I don’t try to hide the fact at all that I love ironstone.  I spotted it about 12 years ago in a magazine and the love has remained constant.  I’ve waffled on crazy quilts, baby dresses, milk glass and silver plate, but I have never waffled on ironstone. My collection has grown to the point that I have to pick and choose what I want to keep and what I want to sell.  When I find a new piece I want to keep, I usually get rid of another.  Here are a few new acquisitions I decided to keep…   I’m into sugar bowls right now.  I’ve been through pitchers and casseroles and now my heart beats fast when I spot a sugar bowl.  I sort of like the chunky ones and I don’t mind if the lid is missing, but I love how dainty this one is.  It’s a

How to Clean Ironstone & Houzz

I often show off my ironstone collection and when I do, I almost always receive questions about how to remove stains.  I’ve never actually whitened my ironstone, because I love when a piece shows its age.  I understand that some people want their ironstone bright white or might want to remove a stain if it is unsightly.  So, I got some advice from Kim of Truffle Pig Treasures (she’s an avid ironstone collector) as well as tips from the WICA (White Ironstone China Association…my kind of people!) This advice from the WICA seems like the safest, easiest way… “The only relatively safe chemical that we know of to clean white ironstone china is hydrogen peroxide, and it is used frequently. Its chemical formula (H2O2) is very similar to water (H2O), but it has an extra oxygen atom. This gives hydrogen peroxide the ability to oxidize organic and inorganic materials, producing water as a

I Love Ironstone

From the moment I spotted a hutch full of white Ironstone in a magazine, I knew that’s what I wanted to collect and I have hunted it down for the past ten years.   I don’t look for the high end stuff, though.   I look for the bargains.  Pieces that are chipped, crazed, stained, missing tops, missing bottoms…whatever.  I don’t mind.  Of course, if a fabulous piece falls in my lap, I don’t turn my nose at it.  Here’s a look at some of the collection I’ve amassed…                  If loving Ironstone is an illness, may I never recover! What do you collect? (If you’d like to know more about Ironstone, you can check out my post, Ironstone 101.)

Ironstone 101

I have received a lot of questions lately about ironstone, what it is, and how to identify it. I am certainly not an expert, but I have been collecting ironstone for about ten years now and I have a pretty large collection (I’ve lost count), so I know it when I see it. I remember reading a magazine years ago, drooling over the ironstone collections in some of the featured homes.  I loved how beautiful and simple it was and immediately added it to my “to collect” list right away.  I found a pitcher several months later and the collection has grown from there.  I’ve been fickle about other things I hunt for when shopping, but never about ironstone.  It’s been a constant over the years. Pieces of ironstone can be found for only a few dollars (or a dime, like this past weekend), but pieces that are very old and in perfect

Ironstone Attic Heirloom

When I stumbled across Emma Calls Me Mama’s Heirloom Party today, I was bummed that I didn’t have a post to share. I have so many wonderful heirlooms, so I got out the camera, took some pics, and put this post together, so I could participate. My grandparent’s attic has yielded many wonderful treasures, but this has to be my favorite. One visit I did my usual digging around through the bug infested boxes, the crumpled newspapers, the wasps nests (seriously) and I caught a peek of a white lid. Could this be…ironstone? I pulled out the lid and then dove into the rest of the box to see if the tureen was still there and if it was in one piece. It was. I turned it over to see the mark…ironstone! I could never afford to buy one of these, so I was thrilled to find one. The monetary
