the ironstone mold jackpot & don't high five at yard sales

I went out shopping on Friday again…one of my last big shopping trips before Lucketts and it was a good one!  I found four French chairs, a dress form, a really cool wood wagon, tons of ironstone and other fun things.  Here’s a look… …I’ve always had a soft spot for salt and butter crocks, but they are always so expensive.  This one was well priced… …and an ironstone sugar jar with a gold band… …some chunky ironstone bowls… …a pretty blue & white casserole… …a beautiful small ironstone tureen set… …and SIX ironstone molds.  I couldn’t believe when I kept finding them.  Usually I find one, maybe two at a time, but I found SIX all in one shopping trip. I have sort of developed a thing for ironstone molds, so I’m keeping three and selling the other three. I also found something I’ve been wanting for a long

the present | ironstone cake stand

You probably know that I have a thing for white ironstone.  I’ve been collecting it for years and have a wide variety of pieces from brush boxes to sugar jars, tureens, and pitchers to punch bowls and platters, casseroles, mugs, compotes, and a huge slop jar. A piece I’ve always wanted was an ironstone cake pedestal.  I saw one in person in the home of an antique vendor a few years ago and it stopped me in my tracks.  I never knew there were ironstone cake stands!  I asked her to let me know if she finds another one and I would buy it.  I had no idea what a crazy request that was, since cake pedestals are like the ironstone holy grail. So, for a few years, I’ve been keeping an eye out for an ironstone cake stand.  I never saw one…even an expensive one.  Zip.  I started

Guest Room & Ironstone

Last night I asked Jeff if I could leave early for handbell practice, so I could pick up some paint on the way.  He gave me a look.  “What do you need paint for?”  I answered casually, “The guest room.”  Usually me buying paint isn’t a questionable event, but I have a lot on my plate right now and painting the guest room doesn’t really need to be on that plate. It can be served with the cheese course or dessert if there’s room left when the entree is done. But, I really want to shoot the bed for the MMSMP look book and my in-laws would like to visit eventually (if it ever stops snowing around here) and I need to get the room put back together for them. There’s DIY shrapnel everywhere at the moment. Deciding to paint the room started with patching the walls.  This room was

the biggest piece of ironstone ever

My mom and I went out shopping on Friday in the hopes of finding cool things to sell in the online shop and at Lucketts in May.  It was a little slow at first, but we ended up finding some really great things.  Of course, we were hunting for ironstone among other things and found some pretty pieces.  I rounded the corner to check out one booth and spotted this… You might think, from this picture, that it is a sugar jar without a lid. …and that would be a reasonable guess… …except THIS is a sugar jar… The piece I found is huge!  It’s the biggest piece of ironstone I’ve ever seen.  It was paired with a lid that sort of fit, but clearly wasn’t meant to go with it.  It is an unmarked piece, but I know without a question in my mind that it is ironstone.  The

Ironstone & Opera Glasses

My mom and I went out shopping on Monday and, while most of the stuff I bought is to sell, I can’t help picking through the ironstone to give myself first dibs!  I’m also starting to hang onto pieces for the Luckett’s Spring Market in May.  I don’t want to sell it all in the online shop and then scramble to find awesome stuff for the shoppers who come to Lucketts.  So, I’ll sell some and I’ll squirrel some away for May.  I didn’t find any spectacular pieces, but I found some really pretty old pieces.  Chunky, super heavy pieces with amazing patina… Stacks of ironstone makes me happy.   I also bought a pretty antique petticoat…     I sort of hemmed and hawed over it, but then I saw the signature on the waistband…       …and it was only $15.  And my gut tells me this

Tips on Shopping for Ironstone

I wrote a post a couple of years ago about ironstone, but I thought I would write an updated post.  I’ve been showing a lot of my recent finds and selling some in my online shop and that has brought out a lot of questions about ironstone. What is ironstone? I answered this question in my first ironstone 101 post, so I’ll quote myself.  “Ironstone china is a glaze-covered earthenware. It was first patented by Charles James Mason in 1813 and other manufacturers followed suit.  At one point, there were almost 200 makers of ironstone china and they made everything from plates and bowls to tureens, covered casseroles, and gravy boats.  Even chamber pots.  Its popularity has come in waves and was apparently wildly popular in the 1970s.  I was not aware that there was anything pretty in home decor during the 70′s, but that decade gets a thumbs up from me for liking ironstone.”

Ladies, I am so giddy with how well things have been going on The Mustard Seed Pages!!  If you don’t know what that is, check out THIS POST.  Hundreds of items have been listed and I know a lot of things have been bought and sold.  It seems like it’s a success so far.  Many of you have had great suggestions for it and I’m making the immediately tweaks that I can and keeping the rest in mind as it grows.  If it gets big enough, I’ll have it moved to its own site where we can customize it even further.  For now, it can just be our little marketplace (that’s not very fancy.) Today, I finally got out of the house.  I realized I haven’t been out for weeks!  I mean, I’ve been to the grocery store and church and to the hospital, but not any fun trips.  Today,

Arranging linens, silver and ironstone…

As I was preparing for Christmas day, I realized what a mess the cabinets, drawers and shelves where I keep my tableware, serving pieces and linens were.  After a few years of buying, making and using things for photo shoots and then shoving them in no particular order behind a closed door, it was hard to find anything.  Linens were balled up, unorganized.  Serving pieces were stacked, balanced and piled haphazardly.  It not only looks messy, but it’s very inefficient.  I had to hunt and dig for things. I started purging and organizing this fall and have continued with a drawer here, a cabinet there.  After experiencing the frustration while setting the table for Christmas, I was motivated to deal with it.  I also needed to clean out the hutch in the living room, since a buyer is coming for it on Sunday.  So, I started with the corner cabinets
