How I Journal

I’ve mentioned journaling a few times on Instagram and here on the blog and have received some questions about how I journal.  I know there are a lot of “journaling methods” out there and I wouldn’t say I follow any specific method, but just started writing and figured out the best way to organize it all for my brain and my creative work. The first thing I learned is that writing everything in one notebook didn’t work.  My ideas, to-dos, thoughts, plans, and notes were like a debris field scattered across too many notebooks that I had to sift through every time I wanted to reference something I wrote down.  It would’ve been fine if my journaling was just about putting something on paper, but I journal so I can remember and revisit things.  I collect quotes, fragmented ideas, and thoughts, notes on books I read, sermons I listen to,

number one

On my @marianparsonsart Instagram, I shared my very first oil painting along with this caption… Number one. This was my first attempt at oil painting just over two years ago. You can see my tentative use of the paint. The barely-there stippled cloud declares my uncertainty. The mishandling of the colors and weak composition show my lack of knowledge and skill. ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But, you can’t get to painting number 500 or 1000 or 10,000 without having a number one. ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Don’t compare your number one to someone else’s number 500 or 10,000. Let your number one be your number one…in all of its embarrassing artistic immaturity. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You have to start somewhere and this is where I started. ⠀⠀ As a comparison, this is my most recent landscape painting, almost two years and around 400 paintings, a dozen online art courses, and 100 art books later… I felt

join me on my next step of faith

I know I’ve been cryptic about “things I’m working on” and “new projects” for the past few months.  Those vague phrases are actually referring to several irons in the fire.  You know about some them like the fabric designs I’m working on for Spoonflower and the oil painting course for beginners, but there are a few other projects that are still in the development stage.  I’m excited about all of them, though, and I can’t wait until they are ready to be sent out into the world. Today, though, I am excited to finally launch a project I’ve been working on diligently for a couple of months but has been on my heart for years.  With the shift away from online and market retail that happened with my move to Minnesota, I have found space for new ideas and the time to finally bring this one to life. I am

creative retreat with shaunna

Well, I made it back from Florida!  The trip there was a little eventful (lots of delays, maintenance issues with planes, etc.), but I got there and only lost a few hours in the process.  This is the second creative retreat I’ve done that wasn’t going to a planned/scheduled conference.  Of course, attending a conference has a lot of value, but I usually end up coming home tired, overstimulated and overwhelmed.  I come home from these personal retreats feeling like I’ve had the quiet thinking time I need and walking through the surf certainly helps me unwind. This one was spent at Panama City, FL, where Shaunna’s parents own a condo right on the beach.  It was a beautiful setting and the perfect place for us to spend a long weekend together. This retreat did have a purpose beyond just relaxing girl-time, though.  As I’ve shared on the creative business

Personal Retreat Guide for Creatives

Last March, I went on a three-day creative retreat to Florida with a friend.  She needed a break from her routine and so did I.  So, we traveled together, split the cost of a hotel room, and then went our separate ways each day to get what we needed. That time was so valuable!  I came back with decisions made on several things I had been struggling through.  I was filled with new ideas, plans, and a fresh enthusiasm for my work.  I also gained clarity on my goals and core values. And now, I’m heading back to Florida to meet up with my dear friend, Shaunna, for another creative retreat.  We’re going to do a lot of thinking and planning together while we walk in the surf and sit by the pool.  (Going to a relaxing and beautiful destination is the best way to do creative retreats if you

the cowbird egg of ideas

As I shared last week, some birds (I’ve since learned they are house finches) have built a nest on my front door, tucked behind my Christmas wreath.  I have been watching the eggs with excitement and wonder.  As someone who has never been much of a birdwatcher, I’m getting sucked into that fascinating world. A few nights ago, I peek into the nest (using the camera on my phone, because it’s too high for me to see) and there was one egg that looked different from the rest.  I figured it was the bird equivalent of the black sheep.  For some reason, that egg was just a little larger and had more speckles than the rest.  What also gave me that impression was there were still five eggs. I shared the picture on Instagram and came to learn about cowbirds.  They are considered parasitic birds who will lay their eggs

Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint turns 7

On April 27, 2012, I announced to the world (well, to my blog readers), that I would be launching my very own line of milk paint.  That makes this Saturday, April 27, 2019, the official 7th birthday of the Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint line!  And we’re celebrating with a walk down memory lane and presents!  We’re running giveaways on the MMSMP Instagram and MMSMP Facebook pages and we’re running a giveaway on this post, too! When I introduced the line in that post, I introduced it as my “pie-in-the-sky-dream-come-true”.  Having my own line seemed so outrageous and out of reach.  But, I had this idea of giving milk paint, a paint I had come to love for furniture, a fresh face.  It needed to be freed from the paper bags, colonial color palette, and the dusty shelves of antique malls.  It’s an amazing and unique product and someone needed

designing fabric & papers for spoonflower

A few weeks ago, I shared that my second quilting fabric collection with FreeSpirit Fabrics wasn’t going to be produced.  (You can find that post HERE.)  Thanks for all of your encouragement on that, by the way!  The brief feeling of failure that comes with any news like that quickly shifted into excitement.  This means I can take my designs and what I’ve learned and translate them into the world of home decor fabrics and papers. I am in the very beginning stages of reworking my existing designs and putting some plans together for new collections and colorways.  Once the designs are ready, they will be for sale on Spoonflower. One of the challenges with designing fabrics (or anything, really), is finding a way to communicate the ideas and concepts that live in your head with other people.  That sounds like a no brainer, but it’s more challenging than you
