the business of blogging | sponsored posts

This is part three of our overall series of the business of blogging, but it’s part two in the sub-series on monetization (aka – how bloggers make their money).  In this post, I’m letting readers as well as aspiring/new bloggers know how sponsored posts work. If you haven’t read the first two posts in this series, specifically the post on how ads work, I would suggest taking the time to do that before you proceed with reading this post. As I mentioned in that post, ads in general are a hot topic, but I think sponsored posts are the most controversial.  And, as a blog reader myself, I really can understand why.  I’ll get into that more once I explain sponsored posts and how they work.  For that reason, though, I found this post difficult to write!  It’s hard to not sound defensive, but I’m going to give it a

The business of blogging | ads

If you missed the first series in this blog post, the business of blogging / money matters, you can find it HERE. I have wanted to write a post about the ins and outs of ads and sponsorships for years, but it seems like such a hornet’s nest that I have decided to stay away from it.  Well, I’m going to beat that nest with a stick today, so let’s hope I don’t end up running away with a swarm after me! I think it’s such a hot topic for two main reasons… ONE If you ask anyone if they like watching commercials or being pitched to, I bet 99% of them would say no.  Including me.  When I answer the phone and I think it’s a telemarketer, I immediately bristle.  When we had cable/dish TV, we would always record shows and watch them later, so we could fast forward

The business of blogging | money matters

When people ask me what I do, I usually say, “I own my own business.”  This suffices for those who aren’t curious or inquisitive at all.  For others, though, they press further.  “What kind of business?”  And that always stumps me, because my business it multi-faceted and it isn’t easily categorized.  Insurance companies and accountants often scratch their head when they are trying to define what I do in one word. I usually boil it down to “blogger”.  It was hard to me to call myself that for a while, because I always thought of bloggers as guys in their mom’s basements ranting about sports or politics.  But, after pecking away on this URL for over 6 years, I have embraced the title. It seems that a lot of people have the same misconceptions about “bloggers”, so I get some quizzical looks when I claim that job title. Like it can’t possibly be a

best of 2016

The first week in January is usually when I hit the ground running, but I’ve been in a post-holiday, pre-head-cold funk and have just wanted to curl up under a blanket and ignore the world!  I’m starting to come out of that, though, and it actually helped me a lot to put this post together and see everything that happened over 2016.  It’s sometimes easy to get lost in a daunting to-do list or pick out the things that didn’t happen as planned or dwell on shortcomings.  This post was a great reminder to me to celebrate the victories, accomplishments, and fun stuff!  And there was a lot of fun stuff. So, here are the highlights for 2016… We launched Farmhouse White in January and it has been our best selling color by far.  It was definitely a home run. I worked on my hardest piece of upholstery ever, a tufted sofa.

hello 2017

Well, here we are in a new year.  Hello, 2017. As I’m standing here on January 2, looking out over the days ahead, I find myself a little hesitant.  I’m usually ready to plow ahead, but this year is already filled with big things and a lot of unknowns.  This hesitation, thankfully, is balanced with excitement and hopefulness.  The stage is set for 2017 to be the biggest year for Mustard Seed Interiors, yet. Here is what is slated for 2017 so far… JANUARY This month is usually a slow one for me, so I spend time on house-keeping projects as well as planning.  While I’ll be doing some of that, January is already pretty booked up with design work and two product launches for the MMSMP line.  I am also traveling to Memphis, TN on January 27-28 to teach Milk Paint workshops at Me & Mrs. Jones and attend the

a place for everything

A couple of weeks ago, we started organizing the studio.  As I said before, it was overdue.  I am generally a neat and tidy person, but when I am in the middle of creating, I don’t like to take the time to pick up after myself or put things away properly.  I’ll just shove a piece of fabric on the fabric shelf or barely open a bin in order to drop something haphazardly in.  Over time, this behavior leads to disorganization which makes me cranky when I’m in the middle of creating and I can’t find what I’m looking for when I’m looking for it. The two things that help me with upkeep more than anything else is… #1 – When stuff isn’t cluttered #2 – When there is a place for everything So, as I’ve been organizing, I’ve worked towards those two goals with each cabinet, drawer, and shelf we’ve tackled. I bought some drawer

how Society6 works

I’ve been asked how Society6 works by several readers, so I thought I would share for those who are interested in putting their own work out into the world (or for those who are just curious.) Step one is to create something you want to sell.  There are many categories of art available on Society6, so you can create anything from doodles and drawings, to paintings and photographs, digital art, etc. In addition to artwork that I created, I have also made some of my photographs available.  I especially love how the pictures I’ve taken of antique linens have turned out. I actually photograph my artwork as well, to make it a digital file that can be uploaded.  The quality and resolution is better than if I use my scanner.  Since I take the pictures in RAW format (the digital equivalent of a photo negative), I can also manipulate the art in Lightroom

my new creative workspace

Yesterday, I was a determined woman.  Despite the gloomy weather, I was in the mood to organize, purge, and get my creative space put together. We have organized and cleaned out the studio here and there, but we haven’t picked through each bin and each drawer, keeping only the things that are really used.  It was time.  It was long past time. Kriste and I worked together, emptying out the contents of bins, drawers, cabinets, and cubbies, and grouped like things together, so we could actually see everything and make more informed decisions about what to get rid of and where a group of items should be stored. We found all sorts of fun and useful stuff that I entirely forgot I had and we also found eight trash bags full of completely superfluous stuff that I gleefully hauled to the dumpster.  (We also found some things that other people might want that we’ll list
