hello 2017

Well, here we are in a new year.  Hello, 2017. As I’m standing here on January 2, looking out over the days ahead, I find myself a little hesitant.  I’m usually ready to plow ahead, but this year is already filled with big things and a lot of unknowns.  This hesitation, thankfully, is balanced with excitement and hopefulness.  The stage is set for 2017 to be the biggest year for Mustard Seed Interiors, yet. Here is what is slated for 2017 so far… JANUARY This month is usually a slow one for me, so I spend time on house-keeping projects as well as planning.  While I’ll be doing some of that, January is already pretty booked up with design work and two product launches for the MMSMP line.  I am also traveling to Memphis, TN on January 27-28 to teach Milk Paint workshops at Me & Mrs. Jones and attend the

things have changed…

I’ve been needing to write this post for a while now, but the words were just never there.  I have felt stuck with my blog for a few weeks, though, and I knew I would feel stuck until I made myself sit down and write. I need to tell you, my readers, that things have changed. Don’t worry.  It’s all good stuff.  I’m not dropping any bombs, here.  I just need to put it out there, maybe more for myself than anyone else. After Lucketts, I had a lot of ideas on the “what’s next” list.  I had some plans in the works that would involve tons of hands-on work – furniture painting, shopping, putting rooms together, styling, photography, etc.  Those plans meant loads and loads of blog content, like the weeks leading up to Lucketts.  I was headed towards those plans at a steady pace and then, like I

the business brain & the human heart

Before I get into the thick of it, I have to say that you all overwhelm me so often!  The first installment of the Lucketts Leftover Sale went live today and pieces were selling before I could even get everything live on the site.  So, I’m “listening” to what you’re “saying” and I need to have more things for sale online on a more regular basis.  That’s a part of a grand plan, anyway, but I can have sales like these until all of that is sorted out. That means I need to do some shopping just for you!  Let me know in the comments what you’d like to buy, so I can order it/hunt it out. If you missed out on pieces this sale, I still have a lot more to list and I will work on that tomorrow (Friday).  As I did with this sale, I’ll list items as

it may look like a ticking stool slipcover…

Remember the stool slipcover I made a few weeks ago out of antique blue & white ticking? Well, this little slipcover that I made in an afternoon has now become a big deal in the history of my business.  It is the first home decor product I designed and made that is being reproduced to sell. I just felt a little jump in my heart. I’ve been wanting this for a long time, because I learned a few years ago that I can’t make/find/create/paint enough stuff to sell.  One-of-a-kind finds and furniture have a limit.  I know I could sell dozens, hundreds, maybe even thousands of a certain thing, but I only have one.  And that’s always been a bit of what adds to the excitement of when I list online or sell at a market, but it’s also a bummer for people who want to buy something and it’s snapped up

CEO lessons & january goals

Sunday night, I was conflicted.  We had just flown in from our trip to the Vintage Whites Market.  I had been “working” all weekend and I really wanted (and needed) to just spend Monday at home…cleaning, hitting the grocery store, unpacking, etc.  You know the drill.  I own my own business, so I can do that, right? Yes, I could.  But I wasn’t going to.  I’ve declared 2016 as the year I’m going to lean into growth and work on filling out the role of “president” of Mustard Seed Interiors LLC. I recently saw a preview for a movie, The Intern.  I don’t know if the movie is good or not.  As I said, I just saw the preview, so my mention of it isn’t an endorsement.  But in the preview, a young entrepreneur and CEO of a company she built was threatened with being removed from her position as the

running a creative business | making profit-based decisions

I wrote a post answering a reader’s question about how I balance business and the rest of my life.  The short answer is I struggle through it.  Sometimes successfully and sometimes not.  You can read the long answer HERE. I received an e-mail from a fellow creative-business owner and blogger, Cassie from Lovely Weeds, about balancing different aspects of our kind of business.  Here is her e-mail… I can’t tell you how helpful your business posts are. A creative business is such murky territory! I know you just posted about balancing work and family, but it got me wondering about how you balance the online side of your work with the physical part. That’s my biggest struggle right now. I have a tiny blog that I love writing, and a retail business where I sell my own handmade and repurposed furniture and goods from a consignment shop and at two local fairs

How my business began | part 6 | when it takes off

The last two installments of this series sort of overlapped.  In part 5, I shared about starting this blog.  In part 4, we left off where the consignment store I sold out of was closing its doors. That’s where we’ll pick up the story. This was the time in my business when it was really scary.  I had become comfortable with what my business had become in two years and I just imagined more of the same…selling out of a local shop, nurturing my growing blog, listing items in an Etsy shop here and there.  It was simple and safe. Then things got uncomfortable. The doors of the shop were closing.  Along with that, the door to my biggest source of income was closing, too.  I remember that sense of panic bubbling up.  We weren’t living off my income by any stretch.  It was still very humble, but it helped with

how my business began | part 5 | the blog

In the last installment of “how my business began” I glossed over when I started my blog.  Starting the blog was like pushing over a domino, starting a chain reaction that has brought me to where I am today.  It deserves more than a gloss over, so we’re going to take a few steps back in the story and I’m going to share the details. First off, I didn’t have a high opinion of blogs. Or bloggers. Bloggers to me were guys in their basement, ranting about sports or politics.  Talking about something they were, most likely, not qualified to talk about, but they felt so opinionated about the subject, they had to share it with the world.  (“The world” in this case, being their eight buddies who read their blog.) And they were usually in their underwear when they wrote their blog, eating Cheetos. I know I was not the only one
