My House

Decorating

bright white ceiling & pearly white walls

Today the boys are off school for the Columbus Day holiday.  Three day weekends like these always catch me by surprise, but we always find a way to just roll with it.  Jeff was out for the day, so it was just me and the boys.  We took this day to hang out in our jammies at the house.  I was planning on being in the studio today, pricing my weekend finds and working on things for the Chapel Market, but that wasn’t going to work with a day off school.  The boys were playing really well, so I decided to hop into a project at home that I didn’t think I would get to until after the market – painting the living and dining rooms. Remember this plan? I first needed to paint the ceilings.  What joy is mine.  I don’t think anyone enjoys painting ceilings.  (Except Michelangelo.  He was

Fall

minimal fall decorating

I’ve share this before, but I thought it was worth sharing again.  I’m not big on decorating for each season.  I think in the world of Pinterest and blogs, it’s easy to feel like you have to do a bunch of projects and crafts for birthdays, parties and especially during the holiday season.  As I’ve been immersed in that world and holidays seem to blur into one another as I’m dying Easter eggs in October and buying Christmas trees in April, I’ve gotten a little holidayed-out.  So, for fall, I don’t put out a bunch of wreaths, hay stacks, cornucopias and scarecrows.  I just sprinkle a few pumpkins around the house and that’s that. Of course, I’m partial to the white and pale blue varieties…    After focusing on the studio for a few weeks, I did a few things in my home.  I just moved some pictures and accessories around

jelly cupboard, organizing & family room fabric

I have been on a streak with finding amazing empire pieces.  I currently have five in my stash!  Now, these aren’t usually this easy for me to come by, but I’ve just been catching Craig’s List and my favorite furniture haunts at just the right time.  It’s also helped to have my dad, who should win some sort of Craig’s List award for his success percentage  when it comes to getting pieces I want.  I just send him the link and he contacts the seller and shows up at my house with the piece.  I give him refusal rights if something looks really bad in person, but that hasn’t happened, yet. Last week, he dropped this piece off at my studio… It’s a really pretty antique empire jelly cupboard.  It’s just a little dirty and rough, but very solid.  What looks like wood grain is actually brown paint.  I admire

getting my house back

As many of you know, we put our house on the market back in April and it didn’t sell.  We didn’t even get an offer.  So, we decided to stay put, work towards some goals and look for a commercial space to use as a studio for our business.  We found an awesome one and moved into it a couple of weeks ago. Getting all of the business stuff out of the house and getting some separation between the two has been amazing and eye opening.  I knew the business was taking over the house, and we have the empty spaces now to prove it, but I didn’t realize how much it was affecting my decorating decisions and/or lack of decisions.  I wasn’t viewing my home as just a home, but a backdrop and studio and work space and it was just too much.  It’s great to have multi-functional spaces,

Guest Room

More of the guest room…

Before I show you more pictures of the guest room makeover, I have to share some exciting news.  A few weeks ago, we took our house off the market and decided to stay in our current home for a few more years.  We were still left with the fact that our business needed space beyond our basement (and every part of the house it takes over), so we started looking for a commercial space.  Well, I just paid a deposit on a 2,500 square foot, white-walled, wood-floored, big-windowed commercial space about a mile from my home.  Is God so good or what?  Talk about an answer to prayer.  They’re working on a few things to get the space ready for me and then we’ll be moving in!  I’ll share pictures and more soon.  I’m about to burst to get in there…  Eeek! So, now to the guest room…  It is decorated

3 minute, no-sew bolster pillow cover

I was working this weekend on my guest room, getting it ready for a photo shoot.  I was in a bit of a crunch, because of some unexpected delays, so I wasn’t able to put this room together in a leisurely way.  The mattress was delivered and I had to put the room together in two days.  I didn’t have time to shop, so it had to come together with what I had. It was like old times and I think it brought out the best in me.  For years, I had to make my home look the way I wanted it to without buying a lot of new stuff.  That’s how I learned to thrift, sew, paint and refinish in the first place!  Now that I buy and sell things, have a home decor business and this blog, I’m able to constantly shop my own inventory to get what I

the winner of the debate

If you’re up to speed on my living room, you know that I have been pondering taking down the curtains in the living and dining room.  Yesterday, after this photo shoot, I took them down… The sunlight poured in and it was so bright and wonderful.  I was convinced that I would go drape-free.   I continued removing the curtains from the dining room.  In case you can’t figure out how my house is situated, which is hard online, these rooms are basically one long room with an archway dividing them.  So, what I do in one, I really need to do in the other or it looks funny.  (We were shipping out of our dining room, so it’s a little untidy at the moment.) Again, the light poured in and the dust was flying.  It seemed exciting and like it would be the perfect change.  But, I’m sure you

updating the living room

It’s been a tough week to get into a groove for me.  On Monday, we took the boys to Hershey Park to squeeze some fun into the last days of summer.  The boys were home on Tuesday, which was a day filled with cleaning, laundry, packing book bags and getting ready to start the school year on the right foot.  By the time Wednesday hit, I was ready to get to work, but I was so behind and was feeling buried in not-so-fun business things like reconciling my accounts, staying on top of my e-mail and getting myself organized.  Yesterday was spent packing up look books to ship out. So today, I was really ready to unroll the new living room rug and do a little bit of creative playing!   Something simple like unrolling a rug energizes me.  I start seeing how the room is shaping up and I
