painting cabinets | priming

If you missed part one of my series on painting kitchen cabinets and you’re following this as a tutorial, you need to read that post first.  I know we want to get right to the good stuff, but your painted cabinets will look crappy if they aren’t prepped properly.  Take the time to put in the elbow grease before you crack open a can of paint. You will be happy you heeded my warning. So, now let’s talk about priming.  Using a quality primer is every bit as important as using a quality paint.  It may be ever more important, because it is the foundation that will help the paint grip the pre-finished surface of the cabinets. For this project, I used Zinsser’s Smart Prime.   For the doors (since they were removed), I applied the primer with a paint sprayer.  I have a Graco HVLP Finish Sprayer 7.0 that

painted porch bench

I spent the day painting cabinets, again!  I am really ready to be done with that project, but I’m nearing the finish line.  I should have the cabinets around the fridge put back together tomorrow. For now, in today’s post, I’m going to circle back to share a project we completed when my parents were still here.  Remember the front porch? My dad and I worked together to paint the door in a custom-mixed green that I felt complimented the pinkish-beige siding.  (Yes, I would love to eventually paint or replace the siding, but that’s way, way down the priority list, so I need to make it work for now.) And I decided to paint the bench to match.  It looked nice as it was, but it blended into the siding a bit and I liked the idea of it relating to the front door.   My dad worked on

studio transformation | part 4

We’re almost there!  The studio is nearing completion and I am so excited to be able to start using this space now that it’s insulated, climate-controlled, and the walls are back on! Today, the wall around the mini-split went up and it looks so good!  Of course, it still needs to be painted, but that will be happening this week. A few of you have asked about the mini-split.  It’s a Mitsubishi unit that heats and cools, similar to something you might find in a hotel room, except this one is actually quiet!  I have found myself putting my hand over it to make sure it’s working.  It is, though it’s just a quiet little thing.  It’s also a lot more not-ugly than I thought it would be!  I realize that’s a poorly structured sentence, but I was just expecting it to be an eye-sore.  It just blends in and

adding open shelving & hiding the microwave

In my post about the pot rack, you could see the new open shelving in the background… When I first spotted this somewhat awkward alcove, I immediately thought it was begging for some shelves. And I realized once we were unpacking that I was really missing some open shelving in this kitchen! It was one of the projects on my list to complete during the two days my brother came to visit.  Late one night, we talked about possible ways to install the shelves…floating, bracketed, built-in, etc.  We also checked out the space in more detail to see what ideas would actually be possible.  It turns out that there are only studs at the back corners of the cubby, so any shelving had to be mounted there, not the back center or the sides.  There just wasn’t anything to screw into, but drywall. After over-complicating things, we balled up the

hanging the pot rack

This kitchen still has a long way to go to make it really “mine”, but while my parents and brother were here, we were able to make a change that definitely started the ball rolling in that direction. The bones of the kitchen are really great, it’s just the finishes that I would like to change.  It’s not that they are bad, just not to my personal taste. So, the first thing I wanted to remove was those pendant lights.  They were way too modern for me and I had another plan for the space above the island. I bet you can guess what that is… Yes!  The pot rack!  (Well, the title of the post really gave that away…) I wasn’t sure if the pot rack would work in this kitchen, but I told Jeff I wanted to at least give it a try.  You see, I love my

adding shelves to an antique wardrobe

Remember this antique pine wardrobe I bought off of craigslist a couple of weeks ago? One of the last projects my brother was able to complete before flying home to Oregon was installing shelves inside.  And one of the last things my mom and I got done before my parents drove back to PA was to unpack my fabric and fill those shelves.   There is something about stacks of beautiful fabric, specifically antique linen, that make me giddy.  I mean, seriously.  I open these wardrobe doors and a rush of excitement bubbles up and I can’t help but release it in a giggle. This wardrobe only had a rod and a small shelf up high.  That would’ve been okay if I wanted to hang clothes inside, but I wanted shelving for fabric and notions.  Since the wardrobe is a beautiful antique, I also wanted to add shelves in a

studio transformation | part 3

Today, I wanted to share more detail on the “window walls” of the studio.  I was so excited about all of the natural light that comes in from not just one, but two full walls of windows.  This room is flooded from sunrise to sunset.  Fortunately, though, it’s not direct light until late afternoon, so I don’t have to deal with sunbeams in my face all day. I will have to add some window treatments to diffuse the light, when needed, though.  I’m thinking I’ll make some simple linen shades that will just tie up. The old hardware store cabinet is really the focal point of the room.  I bought it off of craigslist earlier this year and it’s the one large counter I decided to keep from my last studio space.  It was tough to sell some of those beautiful antique counters, but I felt like this one was

Cleaning behind the stove

Every time I move something from where it’s been sitting for a long time, I realize just how gross my family (myself included) is!  You know what I’m saying?  All of those spills and crumbs and dust-bunnies that haven’t seen the light of day and then they are exposed?  Even the cleanest, tidiest house has a few dirty secrets.  And one of the best hiding places for splatters, crumbs, and grease is behind the stove.  I mean, seriously, how often do we pull out the stove to clean behind it?  I don’t know about you, but in the 11 years I lived in my last house, I pulled out the stove three times – once for tiling the floor, once for painting the walls, and once for tiling the back splash.  Each time we moved it, I took a few minutes to clean the sides of the stove and all
