the toledo drafting stool & equipto cart

There are two things that have been on my shopping list for a while – an antique adjustable drafting stool and a rolling cart, both for my studio.  I’ve been trolling craigslist and looking at local antique and consignment shops and haven’t found anything that was just right.  Well, I hit the jackpot at Junk Bonanza and found both!  A rolling cart (green, no less) by Equipto and an antique Toledo drafting stool. One of the reasons it took me so long to locate these items is that I was being very picky.  The cart had to be the right size, the right configuration, the right color, and it had to roll well.  The chair had to be comfortable, sturdy, and all of the parts had to work properly. Let’s start with the antique Toledo drafting stool/chair.  It was my most expensive purchase at $129.  I paused for a moment

Timeless Home Office Makeover

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by .  I was provided with furnishings for this room makeover in exchange for advertising.  As always, all words and opinions shared are honest and my own.  (The cool thing about this sponsorship is that I had these items in my shopping cart and I’ve just been waiting for the right time to pull the trigger on purchasing them.) I’m so excited to finally share the full reveal of my office! During Christmas break, I sat down at my vintage teacher’s desk in this very office and wrote a list of things I wanted and needed in my workspaces.  Both my studio and home office weren’t working as well as I knew they could.  I moved a business that was in a 2500 square foot studio primarily into two rooms in our new house in MN and I was starting to feel it. For my office,

studio guest chair & art sale

Thanks so much for all of the love on the guest room bed!  You collectively surprised me.  While I was working on some organizing this week, I decided to try scooting around some more furniture.  This checked chair, which I reupholstered a few years ago, was up in the sewing room and I decided to move it down to my studio to use a “guest chair”.  It’s always been one of my favorite pieces and it’s nice to have it where I’ll get to see it and appreciate it more. It’s small enough that it can just be tucked in along the wall, but it’s a fairly comfortable chair.  I also like the addition of a little pattern and the pop of blue. The bottom of it has been needing some attention for a while, so I’ve added fixing it to my “annoying project list”.  It just needs a few

reupholstering the guest bed

The boys and I had a good time over spring break, but not having my usual work hours was a bit of a struggle for me.  I’m behind on pretty much everything…e-mail, errands, projects.  And I really hate being behind.  But, I tried to relax and embrace the time with them, knowing that the years will fly and work can (usually) wait.  I do feel the crunch that is coming, though, to get in as much work as I can before school is out for the summer. While they were home, they played a lot with friends and we even had some weather that was nice enough for backyard soccer and bike rides to the park.  We went to a rock climbing gym, which both boys loved and discovered an aptitude for climbing.  I took them to trial music lessons for drums and guitar from young, tattooed teachers who taught

annoying projects

While the boys are home and dedicated, quiet creative work time is limited (or non-existent), I am trying to knock out some projects that are quick and mindless and have been hanging around undone for months.  The projects that fit in that category are on my “annoying project list”.   Every once in a while I dedicate an entire day to annoying projects.  (You can read about my annoying project day in July HERE.)  That’s the only way I seem to be able to gear myself up to finish unglamourous and unexciting projects, so they aren’t hanging over my head any longer. Instead of merging them all into one day, I’m trying to knock out a few annoying projects over the course of spring break week. The one I worked on yesterday was touching up the paint on the butler’s pantry.  I installed a beadboard back last summer and once the

studio closet progress

Remember the closet we were building in the studio?  (You can read about it HERE if you missed it.)  Well, we finally had some time to do a bit more work on it.  This is how it looked when you last saw it… The construction of it was very basic, but I didn’t care too much about making it fancy.  The interior would all be hidden away behind closed doors. Over the weekend, we took advantage of the warmer-ish weather and built the two doors for the larger opening.  I wanted to build them out of tongue and groove v-boards, so they would compliment the planked walls and ceiling. We put them together using 1 x 3 boards on the back side of each door.  In hindsight, we should’ve used a “Z” pattern to help reduce the risk of warping or bowing.  One of the doors is pretty warped, but

picture frame molding in the 1/2 bath

While my mom was here and the mitre saw was out, we decided to install the chair rail and picture frame molding in the half bathroom.  This is a small room with 9′ ceilings and I thought this trim work would be a nice way to break up those tall walls a bit.  (You can find a tutorial on how to install picture frame molding HERE.) Here is a look at the same view before we started the foyer/half bath makeover… This room still isn’t finished, but it’s really coming along and the trim made a big difference in adding some architectural interest to the room.   The walls are still feeling a little…meh.  I think this room needs some pattern on the wall, so I’m thinking about hand painting a design or using one of the wallpapers I am planning to make for Spoonflower. We will also add some crown

how to frame a baby dress

I’m still chipping away at the finishing details in the guest room.  One of the details that had me a little stuck was what to hang to balance out the mirror hung by the left side of the bed, but I finally have it figured out.  I’ll share my solution and also how to frame a baby dress… You can find the wallpaper  I used in this room HERE. I tried holding up a few different things…mostly collections of smaller pieces.  As I looked through pictures in my stash that still haven’t found a home on a wall, I found this large bird print.  I bought it shortly after we moved in, but I realized that it really didn’t work with anything.  (I really needed a pair and I could only find one.)  It was one of those purchases I regretted, but I didn’t have the heart to take a
