words that rocked | podcasts & books for creatives

It’s hard to follow-up a heart-on-my-sleeve kind of post like the one I wrote yesterday.  I am still reading through the comments, savoring each one like the little gem that it is.  Some have already made me teary in our camaraderie and others have given me more to ponder as I strive to bring my creative retreat home and hang onto the energy it injected for a little longer.  I know that I will have to fight against falling into the same old patterns and mindsets.  I’ll have to grip tightly to the things that inspired and motivated me. A large part of that is going to be keeping creative encouragement on tap.  I have to continue to read books, listen to podcasts, read articles and blog posts, and allow the wisdom and experience of others to prod me along.  I use to do that a lot, but it fizzled

Want to paint 100 stills with me?

Before I lose you altogether, at least hear me out, okay? Painting is a learned skill, meaning you can learn to do it and get better and better as you practice.  Even just a couple of years ago, if you had asked me to paint an apple on a canvas with oil paints, I would’ve laughed and told you I could never do that.  I’ve never been confident in my drawing abilities and I’ve never thought of myself as a “fine art” sort of person.  You might want me on your team in a game of Pictionary, but the drawing talent stops there. A large part of the problem was that I was looking at art produced by people who had been painting for years or decades and thinking my first works had to look as good as theirs or I had no talent for it.  That’s just ridiculous!  We

100 oil stills | no 1-20

If you follow my on Instagram, you know I have started my next art challenge!  I am much more focused when I have a challenge before me, so when the 100 meadows project ended, I needed a new one.  I initially thought I would paint faces/portraits, but I realized I would be painting off of photographs again and, after painting 100 landscapes from photographs, I was starting to see (and experience) the issues and limitations that come with painting with a 2D image.  This led me to still life.  I can set up a scene in my studio, control the light, look at it, and paint it. Here are the first twenty paintings in the series… (The ones that have a “buy here” link underneath are for sale via auction.  The rest have already sold or have not been listed yet.) No. One I knew the benefits of painting a

the new easel | small things become bigger things

I have had mixed feelings about selling my paintings from the 100 Meadows Project.  I knew I would be embarrassed by some of them.  Many of them.  Would I regret sending them out into the world?  Would I regret that my “practice” is hung on someone’s wall? I haven’t found a definitive answer to that question, but, while I may someday regret it, I am glad I sold them.  Yep.  Gladness and regret mingling in oxymoronic fashion. It made me think back to the first few years of my business and I realized that I’ve been selling services and created goods while refining my craft all along.  Even as I was just learning to paint murals, I sold them to people.  My early upholstery pieces, with all of their puckers and imperfections, were sold.  As I was learning which paints and stains and finishes I liked, all of those guinea

100 meadows project | 81-100

Well, the 100 meadows project has come to an end!  When I first started, I didn’t think there was any way I would make it to 100.  It’s not that I doubted my ability to discipline myself to do it, but I know that I can be easily distracted by other things that are more interesting or exciting to me and I will abandon something else to pursue them. But, I have found that oil paints have captured and claimed a piece of my creative soul and I cannot help but nurture it. I also realized when I was about 30 paintings in, that this was a gift I was giving to myself.  Every time I set aside a part of the day to create with my paints, it was nourishing.  That didn’t mean I always created something I loved or I felt like I improved with every painting. There

Bunnies Birds & Blooms

I have been keeping a secret for almost two years and now, finally, I can spill it! I am so proud to introduce my very first fabric line – Bunnies Birds & Blooms presented by Free Spirit Fabrics!  Whew!  It’s good to get that one out into the world. So, for those who aren’t familiar with Free Spirit Fabrics, it’s a quilting fabric company owned by Coats (as in Coats & Clark thread). And, you might be wondering, how I got connected with a quilting fabric company.  I’m not a quilter. Well, to make a long story short, one of my readers has a sister who started a fabric company – Free Spirit Fabrics.  When they would get together for vacations, my blog reader would tell her sister all about Miss Mustard Seed.  Fast forward to a couple of years ago and her sister (who retired, but she was working

designing a product

A year and a half ago, I was offered the opportunity to design home decor products.  It’s something I had considered. and even hoped for, for a long time, but it just never came together.  I was such a hands-on creator that I struggled with trying to communicate my vision to someone else.  I also had to learn how to design something that could be manufactured (and shipped) on a larger scale. Well, the opportunity was “learn-as-you-go” and I have learned a lot.  It took designing hundreds of products to learn what would sell and finally, some of the products that sold, have hit the market.  (It takes a long time!) A few of my products have been floating around for a while, but none of them were branded.  The other day, I received a message from a followers on Instagram.  She had found some enamel signs at Hobby Lobby

gaining space & resourcefulness

I said I was going to hang the postal sorter on the wall to gain some space on the table, so I did just that!  Well, I say “I”, but Jeff actually did it for me.  I did take everything down, tell him where I wanted it hung, and then put everything back, so I was a participant!  He’s just better at hanging things than I am, given that he’s a perfectionist and, basically, a human level. It was a small change, but those few inches of table that I gained makes a big difference in the functionality of the space.  I can put so much more on the table now and I have unobstructed access to the cubbies. I was able to make better use of the lower cubbies, since they weren’t blocked.  So, I filled them with some small canvases, water color palettes, sketch books, etc. We hung
