May the Force Be With You – Star Wars Mural

For those of you who have grown accustomed to my classic, feminine style you’ll realize right away that this is something out of my element! This weekend I completed a mural for an eight year old boy who absolutely loves Star Wars. Although, this is not what I gravitate towards, it was such a fun project and I loved hearing, “Oh cool! It’s the Death Star!” and similar exclamations from my client peaking through the hallway. I placed the Star Wars logo above his bunk bed, so it’s the first thing that catches your eye when you walk in. Lest you think I am too amazing, I did use a projector for this part. I tucked an X-Wing Fighter between the bunk beds, so he can hunker down in there and play. His mom scored these Storm Trooper Cheese-it displays from a friend who worked at Wal-Mart. I’m telling you,

My Kitchen – Waiting for the After

The time has come for me to share my kitchen with you. First of all, it is a great kitchen. Tons of cabinet space, great layout, everything works great and is in great condition. Here’s the problem…I don’t like maple cabinets, I don’t like brass hardware, I don’t like green laminate counters, and I don’t like laminate floors that are a weird beige color with fake green leaves on them. Otherwise, it’s great. Can you hear my enthusiasm? One thing I do love is my pot rack. My mom bought this for me as a house warming gift and I love it. There are times when I think about how pretty a chandelier would look there, but I am not willing to give up my pot rack! The bar opens into the family room, so it is perfect for entertaining. And I really like this corner glass-front cabinet and the

Rub On Poly & Glazing Technique

I received a lot of questions about some of the finishing details on the table I posted about a couple of days ago. First, I’ll introduce all of you to Wipe-On Poly. This product is made by Minwax and you can purchase it at Wal-Mart for about $7.00-8.00. It gives your stained furniture a hand-rubbed tongue oil sort of look. It’s so easy to use and you don’t have to worry about brush strokes. All you need is a rag (I use the old onsies from my boys.) Pour some Poly onto the rag and rub it on the wood with the grain. That’s it! I generally apply 2-3 coats with a light rub with some fine steel wool between coats. (You’re getting a little sneak peak of my new desk. It’s not quite ready, yet, but almost. Stay tuned!) Next thing I received questions about was my antique glazing

Bulletin Board Makeover

Here is my Wal-Mart bulletin board that I purchased for my office. I think it was about $7.00. I wanted to make it fit my style and decor better. Just because it’s a functional piece doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be a pretty piece also, right? First, let’s remove the Board Dudes rubber sticker, shall we? (Sorry it’s sideways!) I then stained, yes stained, the cork my favorite…Dark Walnut by MinWax. This took two coats, cork is thirsty stuff. Apply the stain with a sponge brush. Allow it to soak in and dry overnight. Then, apply the second coat of stain and allow it to dry before adding the ribbon detail. I sanded and primed the frame with my favorite bonding primer from Sherwin Williams. (This picture shows the cork with only one coat of stain. You can see it needed a second.) I worked on the frame while allowing the

Rustic Shutter to Work of Art

When picking up a piece of furniture from one of my clients, they asked if I would paint a few other pieces for them. When I completed and dropped off the first piece (a white side table with a hand painted Delft handle), they showed me a cabinet and this shutter. Cabinet, no problem. You want me to paint the shutter? Really? What a great idea! I love it! It looked cool as it was, but the paint was pealing and left a trail. Definitely not safe to have hanging above a bed and the color wasn’t right for the crisp blue & white style in their weekend home. As you can see, this shutter needed a lot of cleaning. First, I scraped off all of the loose paint with a paint scraper. I then sanded and brushed the piece. This was very time consuming, but necessary. I am fortunate

And the winner is…

It was really tough to narrow the 100 Followers Giveaway entries down to my favorites. I started a list and it was ridiculously long. I loved the idea of doing a monogrammed piece, a delft bread box, or making it function to hold makeup or craft supplies. I finally narrowed it down to 11, then 6. Here are my 6 finalists: 1.) Champoeg Rendevous 09 – Swedish folk art design 2.) Kathy @ Creative Home Expressions – Pink…black…white…green…harlequin…very fun 3.) Jenn – Rustic Italian style to match her dishes 4.) Jacey @Trash to my Treasure – Distressed white with a glass knob and “Bread” written in a pretty script 5.) Anne @ Fiona & Twig – Robin’s egg blue with birds and personalized for her business 6.) 2 brown eyed beauties – White with a glass knob and a quote to make it a family heirloom…how can I resist that.
