DIY or LSEDI?

Translation: Do It Yourself or Let Someone Else Do It?  The bunk bed debate made me think about this.  I always…well…almost always want to do things myself.  I don’t know if it’s a control thing or a I-just-like-things-how-I-like-things thing or I-just-have-expensive-taste-and-the-only-way-I-can-afford-what-I-like-is-to-make-it-myself kind of thing.  I’ve just always been that way.  Now, it’s hard to shut off.  I’ll look through a catalog and think, “I can make that myself.”  My floors needed to be refinished, I was five months pregnant.  “No problem.  I can do it myself.”  I want slipcovers for my furniture.  “I think I can work that out.”  I’d like to refinish a table.  “I think I can do that, too.”  Get the idea? Back to the bunk beds.  Many of you sweet ladies provided the link to Ana White’s amazing website complete with plans for a DIY bunk bed.  I actually printed these plans a few months ago and we

Copy Me Prize Sneak Peek

I am working on rounding up some special things to award the winner of the “Copy Me Challenge” and thought I would give you a peek.  First of all, 175 entries so far!  I am so overwhelmed at that number. I was expecting about 50 or so.  It’s been inspiring and fun to look at the links. I love how all of you embraced the challenge in your own way.  Some have made me laugh, some made me blush, others were humbling and so sweet.  You all deserve prizes, but that would certainly break the bank, so I’m putting together one really great prize.  I’m even going shopping for the winner tomorrow at Lucketts and Wild Rose.  Here are a few things I’ve rounded up so far… …an ironstone bowl… ….it has a hallmark on the bottom and a delicate design around the base. (Muffins not included.  I just couldn’t

The Graphics Fairy’s Dining Room

I have made so many wonderful friends through my blog and it was a real treat to meet many of them at Blissdom a few weeks ago.  It was a very special thing, though, when I befriended a blogger who lives only about 30 minutes from me.  It got even better when we got along really well and I was over the moon when she asked me to work with her in her space at The Old Lucketts Store.  In case you didn’t know, I’m talking about Karen aka The Graphics Fairy.  Not only is she a very cool person, but she has amazing style.  When I first saw her dining room, I knew I needed to bring my camera the next time I was invited over.  First of all, Karen has gorgeous family pieces and antiques to work with and then they were artfully arranged by Amy Whyte, who is

Tiles and Tap Shoes

The marble hex tiles for my bathroom were delivered last week.  Is it strange to be in love with tile?  I actually hugged it, made sure every person who entered my house saw my new tile, and, in true blogger fashion, I set it in good light and photographed it.  Now I’m writing about it.  I love this tile.  I chose not to use my True Value prize money on it, though.  It would’ve been about $1500 to buy it from their tile supplier and I found it on Amazon for about $300.  See, I’m even thrifty with prize money!  I just can’t help myself.    So, my living room has become the holding area for my bathroom fixtures.  That’s the bead board, toilet, tank, and sink basin piled against my piano.  I got a little antsy yesterday and ripped down the wallpaper border that was above the pink plastic tile.  I hope

Casualty of Business

I am blown away at all of the links for the Copy Me challenge!  All of the ones I’ve looked at are ah-ma-zing!  You are all sharing projects inspired by me and my style and I’ve had a rather odd and unexpected reaction to looking at your wonderful vignettes, rooms, furniture and projects.  Let me explain.  My house has become a casualty of my business.  You are all creating beautiful corners in your homes and I’m picking mine apart.  Plucking things to sell, rearranging things for photo shoots, and storing things for “when I finally get around to that room.”  My business takes priority over my house. I take great care to set up a room or part of a room or a vignette for photos… …and then I take it all down. I make pieces I fall in love with…  …and then I have to let them go. Between all of

Desk & Ottoman Transformations

I’m always ramping up for something, aren’t I?  What was a “down” retail time for me last year is craziness this year.  Every February, The Old Lucketts Store holds their biggest sale of the year…The Ground Hog Day Sale.  Brilliant, isn’t it?  So, instead of taking a little time out, R and R, and work a little on my own home, I finished four pieces of furniture in the last two days.  Whew!  This desk and slipcovered ottoman are the latest projects.  I just dropped them off this evening in the room I share with Karen.  This desk was black, beatup and missing a drawer.  The ottoman was…well…ugly.  I stripped the paint off the desk top to reveal a beautiful wood grain.  It was then finished with dark walnut stain and a coat of paste wax for protection and luster.  My husband made a new drawer and I added vintage style glass knobs
