Winterberry Cottage Giveaway!

I am so pleased to introduce one of my newer sponsors to you, AmyLynn of Winterberry Cottage.  She creates beautiful art with vintage graphics and antique book pages to sell in her Etsy shop.  I love how her pieces are graphic, but still have a vintage feel.  AmyLynn is generously offering a giveaway of four free prints to one lucky winner.  Any four prints the winner chooses! Worth playing for? If you think so, simply leave a comment and you’re entered.  Make sure you leave an e-mail address if there isn’t one on your profile.  For a second chance to enter visit the Winterberry Cottage Etsy Store and leave another comment telling me which four you would choose if you win.  For one last chance, tweet, blog or post on facebook about the giveaway and leave a comment letting me know you have done your part to spread the word.  The giveaway

HGTV Tutorials

I’m still working on my second union jack dresser and spent most of the day out of the house.  Since I don’t have anything new going on, I thought I would share the links to some of my newest HGTV.com tutorials. You can find the plans and step-by-step instructions for making this cottage style storage shelf here. An easy way to hide the pipes under a wall mounted sink is a sink skirt.  Find the tutorial for making one here. And lastly, check out this tutorial for a low-sew roman shade. I hope these tutorials can help you out with some projects on your to-do list!

Union Jack Dresser – Take Two

Last month, I painted one of my favorite pieces of furniture ever…the Union Jack dresser.  I rarely do the same thing twice, but this dresser received rave reviews and sold in a wink (with six other interested parties), so I thought it was worth making another one.  I found the perfect dresser when I was out antiquing with my mom a couple of weeks ago.  It’s a little bit smaller and the details are slightly different, but otherwise it’s the same.  If there was a paint or a thick finish, I would’ve stripped the top, but since it just had a thin topcoat that was half-worn off, I simply sanded it with a palm sander.  Applying stain to a dry, sanded wood is one of the most rewarding things in DIY.  It instantly looks better, rich and warm.  It’s like magic.  I applied the dark walnut stain with a scrap

The Fake Out

Last week, we had two wonderfully warm days.  We went out on a walk, played outside and I got in the spring mood.  Then, last night we got about eight inches of snow and it was ten degrees this morning.  Just when I was ready for Spring…fake out!  At least the boys had a good time sledding on our little bunny slope of a “hill.”  Inside, though, it was all spring.  I was working on photo shoots for HGTV.com Easter projects and the June issue of Cottages and Bungalows.  A few bunches of grocery store flowers were arranged and rearranged to work for different shoots.  And I also hit the fruit and vegetable aisle for some glossy granny smiths and over-priced out-of-seaon strawberries.  So, snow outside, spring inside and it’s Christmas in my basement.  That’s right.  I’m working on my last project for HGTV.com for Christmas 2011…a built-from-scratch stocking hanger.  This

The Winner of the MMS Copy Me Challenge is…

Kelli from Restore Interiors!!! I picked my top five favorites and then I handed it over to Donna to select the person she felt captured my look and style the best.  It was tough, but she decided that person was Kelli.  I really, really like Kelli, so I’m happy she won.  I know my prize package is going to someone who will really like what I send. (And she’s a girl after my own heart and can sell what doesn’t work in her home.  You have my permission, Kelli!) Here are a couple of photos from her entry… She did an amazing job of capturing elements I love, but made them her own.  Kelli is a great designer and this space really reflects that.  If you don’t yet follow Restore Interiors, you really should.  Kelli shares inexpensive and stylish ideas… (These vases were made out of burlap and potatoe chip cans!) …she

Copy Me Challenge Finalists!

It’s finally here!  The top five for the MMS Copy Me Challenge! Again, it was so hard to choose just five.  Torture!  I really hmmm’d and haw’d through the entries and these are the ones I kept coming back to.  Here are the finalists (listed in no particular order)… Jennifer from Dear Lillie.  Oh my.  Be still my heart.  She entered her slipcovered ottoman in the Copy Me Challenge, but I actually just want to copy her.  Everything in the room is perfect.  Jennifer has amazing taste that is documented in stunning photographs on her blog.  I get lost every time I visit and Dear Lillie has become one of my new favorite blogs.  …and she’s got the most adorable model and helper.  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Kristy from 4 the love of wood.  Her entry stood out to me immediately.  The blue drapes, the desk with the curvy legs, the white ottoman…she’s

Staging my home…for ME!

This is a crazy idea for me at this stage in my life.  I’m always staging for blog photos, magazine photos, HGTV.com photos and in between the staging, my house is totally un-staged.  I’m really working on balance this year and a part of that is doing things for me, my house and my family, so my home doesn’t feel like one big workshop, set and prop closet.  I enjoy a beautiful space.  I enjoy creating it, living in it and the process is very therapeutic for me.  Yesterday morning, a part of creating that balance meant that I sat down on the couch in my jammies and watched a movie while my kids were at school.  I didn’t work or clean or run errands.  I just sat and ate a late breakfast and watched a movie I hadn’t seen before.  I had plenty I needed to work on, but wasting

Copy Me Challenge Update

Don’t worry.  The Copy Me Challenge has not disappeared into a blog black hole or anything.  My mom has been visiting and I’ve been working like a fiend.  Oh, and Donna’s been working on this little thing…pitching her book to a publisher.  Yawn, right?  Come on!  Are you rooting for her as much as I am?  Even if you’re a teensy tiny bit envious, like I am?  So, we’ve both been pulling long days and late nights and the Copy Me Challenge has been on hold.  Plus, you all made it way hard with your fabulous copies.  I’ve been looking through them and setting aside my favorites.  I’m committing that I will choose the top five finalists and announce a winner this week.   Until I announce the favorites, here are some more goodies that will be included in the prize package for the winner… …two antique door knob sets… …a little iron bird… …an
