The Farmhouse Chic Wedding

Lest everyone think I’ve become a wedding designer in all of my spare time, I should share that I really don’t “do” weddings.  A few months ago, a dear friend of mine called to tell me her daughter (and former youth student in our ministry) was engaged.  This led to her asking if I would decorate for the wedding they would be hosting at their farm.  There was no way I could say no.  Her wedding was scheduled for the weekend right after the Lucketts Antique Market, so I knew May would be insane for me, but it was all worth it.  I have a long history with their property.  When they first bought it, my husband was working on his degree, so we were living in his parent’s basement.  (It was actually a really nice set-up and not as bad as it sounds!)To prevent cabin fever, I spent most Saturdays at

Wedding Preparations & Outfit

Today, I headed off to Warrenton, VA to style a wedding for some dear friends.  They have renovated their entire farm for this event and it’s gorgeous!  Yesterday, I packed up all of the ironstone and silver in my house that could be used as accessories and to hold flowers.  In addition, I brought anything that would look pretty in a vignette.  (The Spiderman water bottle at the bottom left is not included in that!) I really didn’t realize how many ironstone tureens, pitchers, creamers and bowls, silver champagne buckets, water pitchers, gravy boats, cake plates and cloches I had.  It’s really ridiculous.  Great for staging a wedding, but a little ridiculous. I can’t wait to show you pictures of how it all turns out. In the mean time, here’s a full shot of the outfit I’m wearing to the wedding.  I rarely find dresses I like and I grabbed this

Vintage Skye Giveaway

One of my favorite things about blogging is meeting talented women who have started their own “kitchen counter business.”  I feel such a kinship with them.  I recently had the privilege of welcoming one of those talented women, Kristi from Vintage Skye, as a sponsor.  She makes beautiful clay knobs and tags, concrete eggs (with real ducklings as props) and fabric flowers and sells them in her Etsy shop along with vintage finds.  I love her work and used some of her hand made knobs and tags on my pieces sold at Lucketts.  Right after the sale, I wrote her an e-mail begging for more.  Yes…I’m a knob-hog.  And a tag-hog.  Would you like to win some of her clay knobs?  Well, you’ve come to the right place at the right time.  Vintage Skye is graciously offering 30…that’s right…THIRTY clay knobs.  The winner may choose any combination of knobs she

Unstaged

I cannot believe the amount of work my family was able to get done today.  The furniture pile kept growing and the project list kept shrinking.  With all of the work, there is no way I could take staged photos of everything I’ve done, so I just had to snap pictures in my workshop.  Here are some pieces I’m bringing to the Lucketts Antique Market this weekend: A buffet painted in Louis Blue and Old White… ..a pair of French twin beds that I painted in Paris Gray and Old White with gold leaf detail… …a French side table that matches the twin beds… …a dresser in Graphite with some funky glass knobs from Abodent… …a dresser painted in Paris Gray with glass knobs… (Believe it or not, this is only a fraction of what we got done today!) …and here’s me unstaged as well.  This is what I’ve looked

the decision has been made

Yes.  I am going to sell my dining room set.  No “maybes”.  No “ifs”.  No “mights”.  It’s getting a tag on it and it’s coming to Lucketts.  It’s not as easy as packing it up and taking it there, though.  I never painted the last two chairs, so I worked on that tonight.  I also need to make two more seat slipcovers and apply one more coat of wax to the top.  (The design on this table top is gorgeous, by the way!) This set comes with six chairs (two of them are arm chairs), six washable slipcovers, two leaves and table pads.  I might even throw in a free copy of the Cottages and Bungalows issue it was featured in.  What made me decide to give it up?  Well, that’s kind of the way I work, but mainly it was this… A new dining set Pam-the-picker found for me.  I

I had no idea…

I started my blog at the urging of my friend/web designer and a bit of a whim.  I really didn’t know what I was in for.  I had no idea… …I would have to be a hand model.  This is a cruel twist, because I do not use lotions or cuticle creams.  I do not give myself manicures or pay someone else to do them.  My nails are always uneven or cut really short, so I can play guitar. There is almost always stain, paint, dirt or some other foreign, crusty crud under my nails as well.  To make it even worse, I have horribly double jointed fingers.  I actually have to tuck my thumb upside-down against my palm when I’m opening jars.  It just collapses when I try to open it like a normal person.  And I get “ews and icks” when I show how I can bend my thumb

how to start a business on a tight budget

I was looking through my old posts to gather everything I had written about pricing furniture pieces and I came across this half-written post.  I decided it was a good day to dust it off and finish it.  The economy has hit a lot of families hard and SAHMs are trying to find ways to help out.  Here are some thoughts on starting a business on a teeny tiny budget. I know you’re out there.  Yes, you…right there.  Reading this.  Thinking, “I really want to start a business, but I don’t have the money to do it.”  If you want to open up your own shop right away, yes, you need money, but you don’t need a lot of money to put your toe into the world of being a “business owner.”  Every business is different, but if you want to get into a design/antique/painting/crafty sort of business, the list of
