Furniture Feature Friday – Favorites & a Link Party

I’ve been hosting this party for over two years and have sometimes thought I should stop.  There are so many link parties out there now.  When I started this, mine was the only furniture party and now there are several.  Anytime I’m seriously thinking about it, though, something happens that changes my mind.  Last week at the book signing at Lucketts a sweet woman mentioned how much she loves this party and looks forward to it each week.  It’s hard to argue with that.  🙂  Here are my favorites from last week… I love everything about this dresser…the color, the finish, the birds, the knobs.  I think Rachel from Shades of Blue Interiors did an amazing job. I think this old built in cabinet in the home of Jennifer from Town & Country Living.  The bead board and the latches are fantastic! I’m not always going to feature milk paint

Makita Drill Review

If I could only have one power tool, I would have no hesitation choosing which one it would be…a drill.  No question.   Our drill makes an appearance in many of my projects, like this shelf I built for Cottages & Bungalows…   (Okay, my husband helped on that one.)  …and you can see it in a couple of tutorials in Inspired You…   We had a nice drill, but after about six years of hard labor, the batteries weren’t holding their charge as well and the drill itself was getting a little tired.  It was time for an update.  We headed to our local True Value to see what they had.  My husband is a major researcher when it comes to tool purchases, so he knew exactly what he wanted…   …the Makita 18 Volt Compact XLT Lithium Ion Driver/Drill.  He practically hugged it all the way to

stuff I bought & dorking out

This is a dangerous profession.  Well, not dangerous like Alaskan crab fishing or building skyscrapers, but dangerous for someone who loves antiques and is surrounded by beautiful ones regularly.  I do sell most of the things I buy, but there are some pieces I have to keep.  I have rules for myself, though.  I have to have a perfect place for it and I have to sell other things in order to keep something.  That way, I’m always making money (or breaking even) and I have the chance to “trade up.”  (And I don’t have storage units full of French chairs that are discovered when I shuffle off.) Anyway, I’ve been having a hard time finding the perfect display piece for my space.  I’ve been borrowing one from Suzanne for a few weeks, but I really needed to find something permanent.  My neighbor vendor brought in this piece on Thursday and

how to make glittery pine cones

This project is simple, but I was so happy with how beautiful and elegant these glittered pine cones turned out that I thought I would share a tutorial on how I made them.     I bought these over-sized pine cones from Hobby Lobby, but you can use freebies collected from your yard or an obliging neighbor. Insert a small screw eye into the woody end of the pine cone.  I just twisted it in with my fingers, but you can use a drill or a small nail to create a pilot hole, if necessary.   I then applied some Elmer’s School Glue with a 1″ wash brush to the tips of the pine cone.  (I have no idea what those things are called and I actually Googled “anatomy of a pine cone” and still couldn’t find the proper name.)   For some crazy reason, I thought, “This must be what it’s

MMS Decor Steals Pick of the Month & Giveaway

Welcome to another Decor Steals MMS Pick of the Month!  I’m sort of getting geared up for the holidays and when I spotted this beautiful Frenchy crown, I immediately saw it fitting in with some evergreen branches and sparkly ornaments.  It’s subtle enough, though, that it can be used as a decorative piece year round.   I will say, I’m sometimes disappointed with pieces from wholesale companies that are trying to look rusty and old, but this one does not disappoint.  It has an authentically time-worn look and feel.  It’s really a special piece. And, as always, here’s a peek at tomorrow’s steal (which I also picked out)… Almost anything looks more impressive under glass!  I love this glass display case for showcasing simple, natural objects or sentimental pieces and antiques.  This would also be fun to change out with the seasons. Of course, Decor Steals is giving three crowns and

The Vintage Pearl $50 giveaway(s)

I love inspiring business stories and women who found their inner-entrepreneur at their kitchen counter while caring for little ones.  It always encourages me to see their success. Erin of The Vintage Pearl is one of those success stories. What started out as a creative endeavor, turned into a small business selling on E-bay and has blossomed into a thriving company with their own online shop and even a retail store in Tulsa, OK.  (Is anyone else imaging jumping in front of a store with your employees and friends and your business name on the sign?  Yeah, I kinda am…)   (That girl on the far left has quite the vertical jump!) Erin and her team make beautiful jewelry, with each piece featuring a real pearl…         …and hand made things for the home, like this Christmas ornament.    And with all of their success, The

True Value Gift Card Giveaway!

It’s been such a great experience to be a part of the True Value DIY Blog Squad for a second year.  Last year, I was able to paint my kitchen cabinets as one of my big projects…    …and it made a huge difference in my home.   (Wow…it’s hard to remember when my cabinets looked like that!)   I also replaced all of the hardware, which completed the look.       We gave the half bath a new look courtesy of True Value as well.  It went from this…   …to this… This year, in addition to getting some projects done around my home (I’m still figuring out what I’m going to do), I get to give away a $100 True Value gift card to one of my readers.  Woohoo!  You can spend that money however you want at your local True Value Hardware store…     …or

Glitter Crown Tutorial

German Glass Glitter makes almost anything better.  Well, except maybe not cheesecake.  Yes.  I can say with certainty that German Glass Glitter would not improve cheesecake one bit, but it makes a lot of cheap, plastic things look better.  Take this crown…   It started out as a $2.00 tiara from the birthday party section at Target.     I want to use the crown as a decorative piece, something a little whimsical and sweet for the holidays, so I plucked off the combs, so it would sit flat.     They pop off pretty easily.   I then removed the purple jewels, again, just popping them off with my fingers.   Your fingers can get pretty raw after repeating the jewel-popping and comb-plucking on four crowns, so I suppose gloves or pliers might be of use when doing a ton of these.     Ah.  It already looks better…
