Snow Day & Creamy Cauliflower Soup

If you watched the news at over the last few days, you’re probably aware of the snow storm that hit the north east yesterday.  We were projected to get 10-18″, so schools were closed and people were racing to the grocery store and buying generators.  Why does everyone act like they won’t be able to open their front doors for a week after a foot of snow?  I’m always baffled by that.  Anyway, so it was a snow day.  It was me and the boys all day. Playing games…    …watching the snow, eating Popsicles and wearing jammies all day… …building Legos… …getting a car ready for the Awana Grand Prix…  …and making some creamy cauliflower soup.   I make this soup a lot.  Well, I make soup in general a lot during the winter.  I can make a huge pot and eat it for lunch and/or dinner for several days, which

more than stripes

When you have a stripe-painting project, what do you buy?  Painter’s tape.  Frog Tape if you’re really smart.  🙂  While Frog Tape is perfect for painting stripes and other patterns, I have found that I use it for more non-painting projects than painting ones.  I am not challenged by Frog Tape each month to come up with a new use for their product.  I actually use it a couple times a month for random projects and then think, “Oh!  I can use this for my Frog Tape Blog Squad post!”  I wouldn’t have agreed to participate if it was going to be something forced and contrived. So, how did I use Frog Tape in February? Well, I first used it when I was grouting my back splash.  Grout can be messy and I didn’t want to get it on the wall, so I used Frog Tape when I was working

how I develop my photos

I thought I would take a break from the projects and share a bit of behind the scenes stuff.  For the first several months of my blog, I didn’t edit my photos.  Not at all.  I finally picked up on the fact that photos were important for the growth of a blog, so started adjusting the brightness and contrast and basic stuff in Windows Live Photo Gallery.  I still didn’t do it on most of my photos.  It was so tedious and time consuming.  Well, welcome to blogging, Marian.  Anyway, my father-in-law sent me an extra disk he had hanging around – Abode Photoshop Elements.  So, my mom bought me a PSE for Dummies book and I started to muddle my way through the digital darkroom.  I never got very far with PSE.  I liked it, but when I upgraded to a more recent version, I felt lost again.  I

Butcher Block Counters

Last night, as I crawled into bed, I declared, “I didn’t post on my blog all weekend!”  There was something liberating about that.  I love my blog, but I recognize that I can sometimes be a slave to it and it’s nice to step away for a day or two every now and then.  I hardly even looked at my computer at all.  Last week was a busy and intense work week and I was feeling a little burnt out, so I just spent time with my family.  Of course, spending time with my family did involve a bit of DIY…  My husband and I finished up the butcher block counters, so I could work on the finishing this week.     We decided to buy the walnut butcher block from Lumber Liquidators made by Williamsburg Butcher Block Co.  I wanted a richer looking wood and I didn’t want to

Installing the tile back splash

I woke up today, ready to get to work on the tile.  I had the tile saw (borrowed from a friend), the tile, the supplies and my dad lined up to help.  The morning was cold, but sunny.  So, I started to get everything set up and it started to sleet.  Okay.  No biggie.  We have to use the saw outside, but I’ll just set up a canopy tent.  By the time I gathered the saw horses and brought the canopy to the deck, it was like a blizzard outside.  Uh-uh.  I am tiling my back splash today and that is that.     My dad and I got a nice cozy setup on the deck and got started.  (Yes, that’s a kiddie pool on the deck that has one big ice cube in it.)  I got about 2/3 of the way through the project and realized I was woefully

Furniture Feature Friday – Favorites & a Link Party

I’m not a scrooge when it comes to Valentine’s Day, but to me, it’s just overpriced flowers and way too much candy for the kids.  We make a point not to go out to dinner and we don’t exchange gifts or anything.  It did happen to my husband’s day off work, so we spent it shopping at Home Depot and had a nice lunch at Olive Garden.  Works for me. Anyway, here are my favorites from last week. The folks over at Living Vintage built this amazing mudroom that looks delightfully old and worn.   I love that they celebrated the knotty wood and imperfections in the flooring.  I think it looks amazing. There’s a great tutorial on wet sanding over at For the Love of Wood that is definitely worth checking out.  I’ll have to try this technique!  Lastly, I couldn’t help but share this lovely painted pie safe
