Haven, Becoming & Goin’ to the Chapel

We’re going to be homebodies for most of the summer, but all of that changes in August.  I’m going to be doing some professional and personal travel and I hope to meet some of you along the way. My first stop is the Haven Conference (August 1-3 in Atlanta, GA.) Would you believe this is the only picture I have from last year’s conference?!  I was involved with planning the event and teaching, so I was a busy girl.  This year, I’m just teaching one class – Advance Painting with my dear friend Shaunna of Perfectly Imperfect.  She’s my southern twin in so many ways it’s spooky.  She just says “Ya’ll” a lot. We’re going to be running a part lecture/part workshop focusing on Milk Paint and Chalk Paint.  It should be a lot of fun and I can’t wait to hang out with all of my friends from blog

A Lesson from Rockefeller

Today was one of those days.  I had a lot that I wanted to accomplish and I was productive to a point, but then I got hung up and couldn’t work on the projects I wanted to work on, which resulted in frustration and wanting to chuck my sewing machine out the window and eat large amounts of dark chocolate.  I didn’t do either, but I felt like it.  I work well under pressure, but sometimes the busy-balance is just right and then something else is piled on top and I want to crawl into a hole.  Today wasn’t a bad day, but it was just one of those days.  I know tomorrow will be better. Due to the frustrations experienced, I don’t have anything new and exciting to share.  As I was sitting at my laptop, staring at the screen, writing something, deleting it and rewriting it, I remembered

Paint Types – Pros & Cons

I decided it was time to update some of my “painting posts”, sharing the products and techniques I use now vs. a few year ago.  I was looking through some of the posts highlighted on my side bar and they are ancient!  It’s time for an update!  So, what better place to start than paint? Here are the paints I use most, the pros & cons for each, and what I use them for.  Of course, I have my biases (who doesn’t?), but I am going to try my best to be impartial and honest.  I’m not going to link to or mention any specific products, so I can talk about the groups of paint generically.  I have a HUGE paint shelf that is filled with different brands and kinds of paints, because there is not one magic paint that does everything. MILK PAINT (I’ll just put it out there

Antiquing Wax Tutorial

When I last showed the barrel-back French cane chair, it looked like this… In the picture, it has one coat of French Enamel Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint.  I then applied a second coat, followed by a light wash of a mix of Shutter Gray, Eulalie’s Sky and Grain Sack.   (Eulalie’s Sky is one of our new colors and will be available for purchase in a few weeks!) There were beautifully carved details on this chair, so I wanted to bring those out with some white acrylic paint.  I use acrylic paint for decorative painting, because I like the body of it and the way it flows off the brush.  I’ve used it for my decorative painting for years and it was my medium-of-choice when I first started out as a decorative painter and muralist. Once the paint was dry (or mostly dry…I can be a little impatient at

Living with White

I’ve received a few e-mails lately about how it is living with white furniture, a white kitchen floor, a white bathroom floor, especially with little boys, so I thought I would address it in a post. I’ve been making white slipcovers and using white bedding for about 9 years.  I started because of practicality and my limited sewing skills.  All white slipcovers could be bleached and the light color and lack of pattern would hide my crooked seams.  I’ve also always been a habitual furniture re-arranger, so my slipcovered furniture accommodate that impulse.  When we were ready to buy our first sofa (not a hand-me-down), I went with the white slipcovered Ektorp sofa from Ikea (the one that is still in our family room.) It’s worked well for us for about eight years and has survived teenagers and babies.  The white cotton twill slipcovers are $50 each, so I buy

Better than Drop Cloths…

My family room has been undergoing some changes over the past few months…years, really.  It’s been one of those slow makeovers that has happened (and is still happening) as the money and time are available.  It started a couple of years ago when I painted the walls and cabinetry and made new curtains.  In January of this year, we installed new hardwood floors.  Since then, I’ve been waiting.  Busy with freelance stuff, busy with the Lucketts fair, busy with life…  and too tired to think of making new slipcovers, curtains, pillows, etc. Last week, I was walking through the family room and got a little distracted…and that led to rearranging the furniture and rearranging the stuff on the walls and making new pillows and slipcovering a small ottoman.  I can see the room taking shape.  It’s not drastically different.  The bones are the same and the main furniture arrangement is
