Houston Trip | Part Two

I took some time today to recover a bit from my trip to Houston this weekend.  I got a lot of things done around the house, too, and I’ll post about that later.  Tonight I’ll share a bit more about the trip and the workshop. I must start with saying Mandie and her husband were such wonderful hosts.  My mom and I stayed in comfortable rooms and ate delicious food.  Their shop in LaPorte was really cool and a perfect place for the signing and workshop. I arrived in Houston on Friday morning and then we had several hours to eat lunch, get some rest and change.  That was so important because I rolled out of bed at 3:00 am, threw on some sweats and went to the airport and I would’ve been toast that evening if I didn’t have a catnap.  The first event that evening was a free

Furniture Feature Friday – First of 2013

Welcome to the first official FFF of the new year!  If you’re new(er) to my blog, you may wonder what this Furniture Feature Friday is all about.  Well, a few years ago, I noticed some link parties around the blog world.  Bloggers would allow other bloggers to link posts of projects or recipes or whatever they wanted to share that week.  I started participating in these parties and saw a huge increase in my blog traffic and interaction with other DIY/Home bloggers.  At the time, there weren’t any furniture specific parties, so I decided to start one.  I think that was about 2 1/2 years ago.  Now, here we are. This is a place for people to share furniture projects, makeovers, great finds, new furniture arrangements, etc.  It’s JUST furniture, though, so please don’t link up crafts and recipes and stuff.  I do count kitchen cabinets as furniture, so that’s

family room reveal

I was going to show how we installed the engineered floating hardwood floors today, but I did a little photo shoot with my family room and I decided I would share the pictures and some of my reasons for picking this floor.    This is how the room looked when we first moved in… We ripped out the fireplace a little over a year ago and I’ve been waiting to rip out this carpet since the day we moved in.  After 6 1/2 years of living in this house, we finally ripped out the carpet and replaced it with 4 3/4″ wide Heritage Hickory (a floating engineered hardwood floor) by Virginia Mill Works.     The color on the walls is Glass Slipper by Benjamin Moore.  I love this color.  It’s a soft blue, but it’s still sort of neutral.   Having wood floors means that all of the furniture

family room organization

Now that our new floors are installed in the family room, I am very motivated to clean up the joint.  Things were so busy for me in 2012 that I really slacked on my usual “stuff control” duties.  I knew I needed to clean out a closet, organize the toys, or get rid of clothes that were too small for the boys, but I would feel pressed to get something else done and I wouldn’t do it.  For some reason, stuff stresses me out.  It might be in a closet, totally out of view, but I know it’s there and I don’t like it. I like the stuff that’s in plain sight even less!     For about a year, we’ve had this toy shelf with locker baskets in the family room.  It’s a piece we built for Cottages & Bungalows magazine and it’s been a great storage piece.  My

Milk Paint Workshop Giveaway

Next week I am on the move again!  I am traveling to the city where the majority of my blog readers and Facebook fans call home – Houston.  That’s right.  Houstonites (Houstoners?  Sorry, I’ve just been told it’s Houstonians…) give me a lot of love and blog traffic and it’s time that I pay them a visit.  I will be there January 11-12 for a milk paint demo, book signing, breakfast and one workshop.  It’s going to be a packed couple of days, but I’m really looking forward to it.  Would you believe I have never been to Texas?  I’ve been to Russia, but I’ve never been to Texas!  I’ll be there with my boots on and I’m excited to meet Mandie from Altar’d, my retailer and hostess, and a few blog friends like Lesli, Christi and a some others. If you’re in the area and would like to attend any

Furniture Feature Friday – Best of 2012

Welcome to a very special Furniture Feature Friday.  This week, you get to share your favorite furniture makeovers and finds of 2012.  You can link up any furniture related posts you want to or a collective post of your favorites pieces of 2012.  Please try to keep these links the best of the best, so we can all enjoy a collection of the most awesome furniture from last year! Here are the rules for our furniture get-together… 1.) Your post has to be about furniture. Please, please, please…just furniture. If you find your link has been deleted, it’s not because I’m mean, it’s because your post was not about furniture. You can share makeovers, awesome finds, favorite pieces, furniture arrangements, or even pieces on your wish list! Built-in furniture like kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities qualify as furniture. 2.) Post a permalink (the link to the post), not the link

Furniture Feature Friday

Well, this will be our last FFF of 2012!  I decided it would be good to take a break over the holidays, since most of us will be hanging with our families instead of painting in the garage.  Some of the furniture addicts might sneak in some brush strokes here and there…  If you do, just hold onto those links and share them in the new year.  We’ll kick 2013 off with a special FFF link party where you can link up your favorite furniture find/makeover of 2012.  I think that will be pretty fun to see the best of the best. I’m excited about 2013.   I’ve been thinking about my business and what I want to accomplish next year professionally and personally.  I’m not a new years resolution kind of person, but it’s always a good time to reassess things.  I’ll be sharing some of my thoughts &

A New Look & The Empty Nest

Notice something new? I’ve been working with Reni on a new look for my blog over the past few months and it finally went live last night.  I still have a lot of work to do on the pages, but it’s getting there. Today I went to do a book signing in Warrenton, VA at The Empty Nest.   I met Janet, the proprietress, a few years ago through our blogs.  I never thought I would be signing my book in her shop, so it was a pretty amazing day. Janet also carries my Milk Paint at her shop… …and her son was giving a milk paint demo.  Milk Paint can be a little intimidating, so it’s always nice to take some of the mystery out with a demonstration. Janet also carries ASCP… …and a lot of other beautiful antiques, handmade items and home decor… …and, of course, I bought
