kim’s coastal bedroom | the bedskirt & built-ins

I know lots of you are eagerly awaiting the reveal of my mom’s room makeover.  Trust me…she is, too!  My design services are free, but they aren’t fast!  We have been making some progress, though.  I mentioned before that I made a bed skirt, but I didn’t have a chance to get a picture of it, until this weekend.  (…when we watched the Redskins beat the Bears.  Just throwing that out there.)  Here it is on the bed… It really adds a finished look to the bed and a hint of color and pattern in the neutral space.  The fabric is Adelaide Mist from Sailrite. I wish I had made a tutorial of the skirt, but I flew through it to get it made for my mom’s birthday, so I could present it to her when I took her out to dinner a few weeks ago.  It involved lots of

10 minute decorating | “antique” bread board

I was asked by one of my blog buddies, Laura from Finding Home, to join a “10 minute” challenge each month along with some other awesome bloggers.  I tend to take on projects that are more involved..refinishing, painting, upholstering, etc., so I like the idea of pinning myself down each month to do something simple and quick. The theme for this month is “10 minute craft”. As soon as I saw crafting was the theme, I went blank.  I’m not a crafter!  I know there’s a fine line between a DIYer and a crafter, but when I think about doing a 10 minute craft, my creativity just tanked.  So, I went back over things I’ve made over the past few weeks and I found something that was quick, great project… …”antique” bread boards.  I have been collecting bread boards and cutting boards for years, mostly from yard sales, auctions, antique shops,

making a new table look old…

Before we get into the process of making a new table look old…  I hope everyone had a lovely weekend!  We spent a much needed Saturday at home.  Between sickness and traveling over the past few weeks, we were all behind on our chores, laundry, cleaning, mowing, etc., so we took a day to take care of those things.  Picking up toys turned into organizing the basement and picking out toys to give to younger boys.  That turned into hours of great playtime with toys that had been buried and forgotten.  So, it was a balance of work and fun and a great lesson on the joys of being able to actually find your stuff! Sunday was a bit more restful and involved church, some light yard work (the day was gorgeous), errands and dinner out with my parents.  It was a nice break from the frenzy-that-is-my-life in the weeks

adding casters to the counter

A couple of weeks ago, I found this amazing antique counter on Craig’s List.  My mom and I cleaned it and then I sealed the paint to prevent further chipping. I want everything in the studio to be very easy to move, so we have a lot of flexibility with the set up and I can scoot things around by myself without shredding the floors.  So, my dad came to the studio yesterday to put casters on the counter.  We thought we might need to build a frame underneath to support the casters, but when we flipped it over, we saw that the wood was thick and in good condition to accept the screws required to hold the casters in place. Adding casters was as simple as lining the caster up and screwing it in. I bought some vintage casters, but we ended up using new ones, so they would lock

more must-have tools

Any time you see this logo on a post… …it means that the post is written by Jeff and it’s about the behind-the-scenes stuff that happens in our workshop.  We’re talking tools, setting up a workshop, furniture repair, designing & building built-ins and freestanding furniture and all of the other crazy things I ask Jeff to do for me.  I hope you’ll enjoy hearing from my other half on occasion.  He’s been talking tools lately, but I know he has some great tutorial ideas brewing.  In this post, he’s rounding out the top seven most useful tools… I thought I’d continue discussing my most indispensable tools by offering numbers four through seven. After recently posting my top three, I felt more needed to be said about some other tools that have been enormously helpful in completing projects. Because I’m such a swell guy, here is a brief recap of the top three.

Jeff's top three workshop tools

Jeff, my other half who is famous for his photobombing, has been working on the blog behind the scenes for a long time…shipping things, fixing things, building things, hanging things, carrying things… but now he’s stepping front and center. He has written a post sharing his top three indispensable workshop tools.  Enjoy… Everybody has their favorite tools. I have mine and you have yours. And the tools we depend on most are obviously determined by the kind of work we do. Marian, for example, would probably have an orbital sander in her top three because she uses it for just about every furniture makeover she does. For me, the sander may have an outside chance at cracking the top ten. Allow me to list a couple of ground rules. First, drills don’t count. Yes, I am aware that a drill is a tool. And yes, I use a drill all the

Organizing the Workshop

I confess that I have a tough time keeping my work areas clean.  I know the other creative types out there understand.  I am a bit of a neat-freak, but when I’m working on a lot of things, I don’t take the time to clean up the workshop.  Scraps of wood get tossed on the floor, tools are piled up on the workbench and things are in a perpetual state of disorganization.  I just close the door. So, my mom and I worked on tidying up the place. We picked up some more hooks and tool holders from our local True Value to use on the pegboard surfaces in the workshop. We even hung the hammers and drills… We used long hooks on the table saw out feed table to keep extension cords handy. If you’re planning on organizing a workspace yourself, here are a few tips… It may be

The Mustard Seed Workshop & the Bagster Bag

For some crazy reason, my husband and I felt like we needed to get our basement organized, cleaned and functional right after the Lucketts Antique Market and before my Milk Paint launch.  I don’t know what we were thinking, but it’s been nice to see things coming together.  I don’t know about you, but I feel stressed out when things are messy, so organizing is a way I can regain some control over my house (and a little bit over my life.) We ended up with a lot of trash and we were just piling it up in the back yard (our neighbors loves it, I’m sure.)  The plan was to drive it out to the dump when we were finished.  Then, I received an e-mail from Waste Management, the company who makes the Bagster Bag.  I’ve heard of the Bagster Bag and I’ve even seen people using them, but I never thought to
