antique pastry cutter & nutcracker

I am going to share more about the basement makeover this week (including sharing about painting the trim and light switches), but I thought I would share a couple more of my finds from Gold Rush Days today – an antique pastry cutter and a nutcracker with bone handles. Both of these finds were ones that I spotted early in the day, but did jump at right away.  Neither the antique pastry cutter nor the nutcracker were on my list, they weren’t things I *needed*, and they were both priced a little on the higher side.  So, I admired them and kept looking.  As I was shopping the rest of the market, though, I kept thinking about those two pieces.  I wondered if someone else bought them or if they would still be there.  I imagined them in my house. I’ve learned when antique shopping (or shopping for anything) to

GAP Home at Walmart

Disclosure: This blog post is sponsored by Walmart.  All words and opinions expressed about the are, as always, honest and my own. Did you hear/see that has collaborated with on a new home decor line? As a long-time lover of GAP’s classic style, I was excited to see the products in this collaboration.  GAP’s timeless aesthetic and signature blue & white color palette are definitely on display in this collection and, best of all, it’s paired with Walmart’s affordable pricing. I purchased for Calvin’s bed, but I also bought a from the collection.  If you’ve followed my blog for a while, you know that I love dishes and particularly stoneware.  I was interested in seeing modern take on these tabletop staples. First of all, the dishes are sturdy and beautifully made.  They have a raw edge that gives them more of a handmade feel.  Each piece has clean lines, so

no. 10 Ansco folding pocket camera (circa 1906)

One thing I’ve learned after years of shopping for antiques is to always open up boxes and cases.  Sometimes, the most delightful things are hidden away in a case that doesn’t look very impressive.  Typewriters, binoculars, sets of silver flatware, and cameras are just some of the things you can find in boxes and cases.  I opened a beat-up old leather camera case when I was at Gold Rush Days and found this beautiful antique camera from 1906 – the no. 10 folding pocket Ansco camera for just $20… I found a description of the no, 10 Ansco camera from THIS website – “The No. 10 Folding Pocket Ansco was manufactured by Ansco in circa 1906. This model was similar to the No. 9 Folding Pocket Ansco except that it featured rising-falling and swing front. Like the No. 9 it produced a large negative for landscapes and panel portrait work

gold rush days finds | collars & boots

Yesterday I shared about the antique letters and books I bought over the weekend at Gold Rush Days and today I’m going to share a few more of my finds as well as what I plan on doing with them. When I’m shopping for antiques, I sometimes have specific things I’m looking for, but I almost always end up buying things that “speak to me.”  I can’t explain why I’m drawn to certain things except to say that I just like what I like.  One of the things that I’ve always been drawn to, right from the very beginning of my love for antiques, is old clothes.  Even if I don’t buy them, I always take a minute to admire old shoes, hats, petticoats, socks, dresses, coats.  Some of my earliest antique purchases were baby dresses and little lace bonnets.  I even bought a pair of heeled leather wingtip shoes

gold rush days finds | antique papers & books

I was going to share all of my Gold Rush Days finds in one post, but when I started editing the photos, I realized that would be a pretty long post.  It’s not that I bought so much stuff, but each piece has a story with it and different aspects of it to show.  I didn’t want to rush through it, so I’m going to break up what I purchased into a few posts.  Today, I’m going to share some antique papers and books I found. One booth was curated by a woman who obviously appreciated old letters, photos, albums, etc.  I lingered there for quite a while, picking through the boxes and flipping through books.  She was selling several bundles of letters for $10/each, tied up in a light blue ribbon.  Let me just acknowledge that I do not need any more old pieces of paper or people to

gold rush days 2021

This weekend was Gold Rush Days in Oronoco and Rochester, MN!  We don’t have a lot of antique shops in my immediate area, so I look forward to this event every year.  It’s actually the same event held in two separate places.  The original Gold Rush Days takes over the small town of Oronoco, MN and a spin-off event happens simultaneously at the Rochester, MN fairgrounds.  They are both large events and it’s worth going to both if you have the time. I started out of Friday meeting Cheri, my antiquing buddy.  We’ve been to Gold Rush Days twice before and we always have a good time together.  We have similar tastes and are familiar with each other’s styles, so we help look for things on our lists.  I had actually made my Gold Rush Days list weeks ago, so I could be focused and intentional about what I bought.

painting a vintage dough bowl

I’ve had this vintage wooden dough bowl for a few years.  My mother-in-law gave it to me when they were cleaning out Jeff’s grandfather’s house.  She thought I would like it and she was right.  It is a practical size and shape and has a pretty patina.  I’ve always thought it would look pretty with some blue paint on the bottom and, so I finally pulled it out and painted it a couple of weeks ago.  I was in a mood to work on a project and this was one that’s been on the to-do list for far too long. Here’s how the vintage dough bowl started…  I love how wooden pieces wear over time. Can’t you see some color on the bottom?  I adore primitive wooden bowls and trenchers wearing their original milk paint, but they are always so expensive.  This is a nice way to get that look
