The Retreat kitchen | before & after

I shared about our photo shoot in this 1799 manor house last week, in case you missed it. I promised I would share more about the house and I’m fulfilling that now! There was just way too much to cover in one post without allowing for an intermission or potty/snack break. Today, I want to share more about the kitchen. It’s actually one of the most humble spaces in the 6,000 sq ft house and it’s still pretty fabulous! I think it’s the most “relatable room”, though, since it doesn’t have the amazing woodwork that you see in the rest of the house. It feels a lot more like a butler’s pantry in the house and I liked how it gave the vibe of a pair of jeans, balancing out the pearls and designer shoes in the rest of the space. It’s time for another 10 minute decorating idea! This month, me and a few other bloggers are sharing 10-minute fall decorating ideas. I love these quick and easy ideas that show seasonal decorating doesn’t have to be complicated, expensive, or over the top. It can be simple, fun, and pretty. As I’ve shared before, when it comes to my home and seasonal decor, I keep things fairly simple and natural. I’m really over the idea of having tons of bins of decorations that have to be stored and brought out each year. I know some people thrive on that and it brings them a lot of joy. Leigha’s Bedroom Update

Do you remember Leigha’s decorating delimma? She was the one with the room that looked heavy and dark. I put a plan together with some ideas for her space, based on what she told me she liked… Here’s how the room looked before… Here is how it looked after a reset and she painted the walls in a creamy white (she’s still going to swap out the lamps or change the shades)… …and the ceiling in a pretty blue. Leigh also changed out the bedding to an inexpensive white matlasse spread and used one of her beloved vintage crochet pieces at the foot. And she’s still sending me updates! Her husband didn’t like my initial suggestion of a chandelier, although he was open to taking the ceiling fan down. So, I suggested a lantern. Simple, classic and definitely not fru-fru. Remember the dresser that was being a total jerk? Well, he has improved upon acquaintance. He’s a bit of a Mr. Darcy and I dare say that he is now dashing and (almost) ready to sweep someone off their feet. This dresser is sort of like that… Here’s a simple video tutorial on how I did it… The dresser is painted in MMS Milk Paint in Marzipan. The top was stripped to the bare wood and finished with Hemp Oil to hydrate the wood and protect it. The hardware was so pretty, but it was a little fussy for what I envisioned, so I removed the backplate and just used the clapper pulls. This allows the book pages to be the real star. room reset challenge | part 3 | making lists

In part two of the room reset, we were playing with our stuff. Like our room is one in a dollhouse and we’re moving around the pieces until we like it. Adding some things, taking away others, assessing the space and trying to think outside of the box. This is about using as much of what you have to make this room what you want it to be. Now, it’s time for part three. Making lists. I know that doesn’t sound as fun as playing with your things, but the lists are about refining the space and making your dream room attainable. white on white on white

Soooo…I am really starting to love white. I’ve been moving in that direction for a while, but lately, it’s what I’m drawn to the most. The key to whites being successful is texture and tone. The shades of white you use in a space can either look warm and intentional or stark and bland. It’s a fine line. I love mixing crisp whites with those that are creamy. On the white slipcovered Ikea sofa, I layered a nubby antique hemp sheet on the back with a lace-edged runner on top. I mixed white cotton channel-stitched pillows with a cream linen knife-pleated pillow. The contrasts are subtle, but pretty. Anything but stark. If you’re afraid of whites because your family and whites don’t mix well, then try using more creams and off-whites and don’t use white upholstery on the pieces your family sits on the most. I spent today out and about. My youngest son, Calvin, had a doctor’s appointment and then I had to drive him an hour to school, meet him for lunch to give him insulin (it was a special lunch away from school) and kill time for a couple of hours until it was time to pick the boys up from school. So, what’s a girl like me to do with a couple of free hours? Well, I am predictable. I went to an antique mall to linger and hunt. I don’t have anything specific to buy for right now, but when you have a couple of hours to kill… Here’s what I found… There was no way I was leaving without these.
