customizing paint colors for your home

When I painted my home office, I mentioned that I used Benjamin Moore’s Stonington Gray mixed at 50% and I got a lot of questions asking what that meant.  I explained it years ago, but thought I would do a refresher post, explaining why I love to customize colors on the paint deck. I do acknowledge that sorting through a paint deck containing thousands of colors can be overwhelming enough.  Why would you want to muddy the waters even further with the option to customize every single color in the paint deck?! If you’ve ever had angst selecting a paint color, then you know that, even with all of the options, sometimes a color is right, but not quite right. When looking at the gradation of hues on a paint deck, one might assume that it’s the same color in different values (light-to-dark), but that isn’t the case.  The colors

Tuscany, Paris, & Junk Bonanza

I have a couple of very exciting trips and events coming up this year that I wanted to share, in case you’re able to join me.  The first one is a biggie. A few months ago, I received an e-mail from one of my MMS Milk Paint retailers, Dana, of Le Beau Chateau.  She is a seasoned world traveler and has taken and led many trips to Europe.  She pitched the idea of a creative retreat in one of her favorite places – Tuscany. I’ve had a few invitations like these over the years.  I would always get a quick rush as I allowed the idea to become a reality in my mind.  But the real world…small kids, a husband in school, etc. would pull me out of the daydream.  It just wasn’t the right time.  Maybe one day, it’ll be the right time. When this opportunity came, it was

Butler’s Pantry Plans

Before I share about the butler’s pantry, I wanted to give everyone a head’s up that my latest round of paintings are for sale and the auctions end today.  You can view and bid on the paintings HERE. There is still snow on the ground and it was in the 20’s today, but it still feels like spring is coming.  It will be here eventually, anyway!  I don’t feel antsy for spring, but I am starting to get the itch to work on more home projects again.  We’ve kept things moving along over the winter with painting, having the wood floors installed, working on organization, sewing curtains, etc. but I’m ready to dig into some bigger projects. Once it’s warm enough, we really need to get our garage cleaned out and organized.  We have some boxes we still need to unpack, even!  It’s a bit of a mess and a

craigslist coffee table & playroom update

There’s some progress we’ve made on our house, but I haven’t shared it, because it’s not done or particularly photo-worthy!  I’m really trying to get out of that everything-has-to-be-a-beauty-shot mindset, though.  I’m working on it. So, here are some pictures of updates we’ve made to the basement, just to show what’s happening on the home-front. In January, I picked up a $25, round oak coffee table off of craigslist.  It was the perfect size and just what I had been looking for. I initially was looking for an ottoman, but we really needed a spot for drinks, snacks, board games, etc. and not just another place to prop our feet.  The finish is not in bad shape at all, but the wood is a little orange.  Once it warms up, I am going to take it outside, strip and sand the top.  I’m planning to finish the top in a

ushering in spring with faux florals

Oh, girls…  I am down in Florida right now having a personal creative retreat and it’s been soooo good.  I can’t wait to sort through my pages of notes and share it all (or a lot of it) with you. But for today, I’m featuring one of my fellow creative business owners… I’ve followed Courtney from The French Country Cottage for years.  I’ve always admired her romantic, yet unfussy style.  Every time I read one of her blog posts or see a frame on her Instagram, I think, “Flowers must follow that girl everywhere she goes.” And now, Courtney has designed a faux floral line presented by Balsam Hill.  The pieces she designed for the line are so pretty and so “her”.  Very romantic and elegant. I hung the Marseille Meadow wreath on the hutch in my dining room and stood back to admire it. It was a stark contrast

hiding ugly office stuff & hanging sconces

Before I go into today’s post, I have some exiting news!  Free Spirit Fabrics has been acquired and that means my fabric lines will still be produced! That means I need to hunker down and start working on colorways for the second collection again.  I’m so excited that Bunnies Birds & Blooms will be available, but I’m even more excited for this second collection to launch.  The wheels are turning again… Now, onto today’s post… I’m still chipping away at my office here and there.  I have been looking for baskets for the top of the cabinet to use for storage and to raise the visual height of the piece.  I also wanted to hide the internet modem and Orbi unit. My no-spend February turned into a low-spend February when I bought the cabinet off of craigslist and since then, I’ve stuck to the spirit of my low-spend challenge.  I

making way for hardwoods | ripping up carpet

I’m sharing everything in reverse when it comes to the office makeover, but that’s just how it goes sometimes!  I usually write about what is most “at my fingertips” and sharing progress on the room was a lot more fun than talking about ripping out carpet.  But, it’s an important bit that some of you might want to know more about, so I’m circling back to share the details on removing carpet. Here is a before picture of the room, so you can appreciate how far it’s come… …and how it’s looking today… (Yes, I’ll work on the cord situation, but curtains will help a lot with hiding those!) Obviously, the first step is to take out the carpet and padding, which is surprisingly easy, although it does take some muscle!  Just pull up a corner and, in most cases, it comes right up.  Jeff did this before I even

One of the top home investments you can make…

This post is sponsored by James Hardie®.  All words and opinions are, as always, honest and my own. I’ve already shared that our new house in Minnesota has amazing bones.  It has a functional and intelligent floor plan, it has many brilliant features (like outlets in the soffits for Christmas lights and in-wall night lights that go up the staircase.)  The changes that we’ve made to it, with the exception of replacing some of the appliances and “guts” of the house that were at the end of their life, have been largely cosmetic.  They were changes to customize the house to suit our tastes. And, almost all of these changes, are ones we talked about before we moved in.  One of the changes we talked about was replacing the siding.  Even when I first looked at the listing, before we knew we would move to Minnesota or buy this house,
