kim’s coastal bedroom | the bedskirt & built-ins

I know lots of you are eagerly awaiting the reveal of my mom’s room makeover.  Trust me…she is, too!  My design services are free, but they aren’t fast!  We have been making some progress, though.  I mentioned before that I made a bed skirt, but I didn’t have a chance to get a picture of it, until this weekend.  (…when we watched the Redskins beat the Bears.  Just throwing that out there.)  Here it is on the bed… It really adds a finished look to the bed and a hint of color and pattern in the neutral space.  The fabric is Adelaide Mist from Sailrite. I wish I had made a tutorial of the skirt, but I flew through it to get it made for my mom’s birthday, so I could present it to her when I took her out to dinner a few weeks ago.  It involved lots of

Sarah’s Fireside Room

Do you remember Sarah’s wood stove decorating dilemma that I posted about this summer?  Well, I received an update from Sarah on her progress and her plan, so I thought I would share it with you. Here is the inspiration board Sarah sent me… Here’s how the room looked when I shared it back in August… And here is how it looks now.  She decided to paint the walls in the kitchen and fireside room in a Benjamin Moore color called “Cloud Nine” and it really unified the two spaces.  The rust color wasn’t bad at all, but it looked disconnected from the rest of the space.  The white walls look fresh and are now ready for warm layers to be added. There is brick behind the stove, but they discovered that it doesn’t cover the entire wall, so they are going to install a thin brick wall covering to

Kim’s coastal bedroom | the walls & built-in plans

I spent a good part of my day today helping my parents paint their bedroom in the color I picked out, In Your Eyes by Benjamin Moore. My dad kept referring to it as “in your face.” I’m so pleased with the color, though.  The room looks very sparse at the moment, but the color palette we’re building is calming, and serene and definitely sets a coastal tone. Before, the room was beige.  My mom chose the color when they first moved in, just to get something on the wall.  She’s never been in love with it and I think it’s because it wasn’t an intentional choice.  It was a default one. We tried out some test swatches last week and In Your Eyes, the middle color, was the one we both liked the best.  Dad didn’t get a vote, which suited him just fine. Here’s how the other side

The Retreat | Dining Room, Study & Foyer

I’ve spent most of the last few days at home with a sick boy.  My youngest has strep throat, poor little guy.  He’s on antibiotics now, though, and is finally on the upswing. Several days at home, away from the studio, squeezing work in where it fits, doesn’t get me very good blog material.  Fortunately, I still have pictures of The Retreat to share. In case you missed my initial post about it, The Retreat is a manor house in Virginia that was built in 1799.  We did a photo shoot there for our second look book and it was an absolute dream day. It’s hard to even call this space a “foyer” with a straight face.  You would at least have to use the fancy pronunciation.  It’s basically a room all on its own with a grand staircase and magnificent woodwork. I’ve never see the inside of a front door

kim’s coastal bedroom | selecting a wall color

You would think that selecting a wall color would be really simple.  Right?  Well, if you’ve ever strolled into a paint store and picked a color based on a little chip and spent a day painting, only to realize that the color was much brighter, darker, bluer, greener, pinker, whatever-er than you thought it was in the store, then you know it’s not as simple as one would think. I’ve gone through the scenario described above enough times to know that it’s worth taking my time when selecting a paint color. Start off by going to a paint store and pulling as many chips as you want that are in your desired color palette.  (Since I qualify as a “designer”, I have paint decks from several major paint stores, so I just pull those out.)   Even if you’re just painting the walls white, get lots of paint chips, because there

The Retreat kitchen | before & after

I shared about our photo shoot in this 1799 manor house last week, in case you missed it.  I promised I would share more about the house and I’m fulfilling that now!  There was just way too much to cover in one post without allowing for an intermission or potty/snack break. Today, I want to share more about the kitchen.  It’s actually one of the most humble spaces in the 6,000 sq ft house and it’s still pretty fabulous!  I think it’s the most “relatable room”, though, since it doesn’t have the amazing woodwork that you see in the rest of the house.  It feels a lot more like a butler’s pantry in the house and I liked how it gave the vibe of a pair of jeans, balancing out the pearls and designer shoes in the rest of the space. Here is how it started.  It was in a pretty sad

room reset challenge | part 3 | making lists

In part two of the room reset, we were playing with our stuff.  Like our room is one in a dollhouse and we’re moving around the pieces until we like it.  Adding some things, taking away others, assessing the space and trying to think outside of the box.  This is about using as much of what you have to make this room what you want it to be. Now, it’s time for part three.  Making lists.  I know that doesn’t sound as fun as playing with your things, but the lists are about refining the space and making your dream room attainable. (This picture is from last year.  I’m not decorating for Christmas already!) So,there are two lists to make at this point… 1.) A list of action items, things to do in the space I have found that when you empty out rooms during a reset, you notice things that

Kim’s Coastal Bedroom | part 2 | the before

I went over to my mom & dad’s house today to take some before pictures of their master bedroom, the one that’s my next makeover project. I shared the concept for the room in part 1, but here’s a reminder… The space right now is a pretty blank slate.  My parents moved here a few years ago and my mom’s always been a little stuck on this room. (As an aside, when I first got to the house, my mom went running to the bedroom in front of me.  She said she wanted to make sure it was nice and clean.  She didn’t want to have happen to her what happened to Megan!  In case you missed it, I went to Megan’s house to work on her master bedroom and we ended up working on her home office instead, which happened to be the room where she threw all of
