family room furniture shuffle

This seems to happen every year.  I’m acquiring furniture and antiques to sell at the Lucketts Spring Market and the desire to change things up in my own home starts to brew.  Since I moved my business from my house to the studio, the furniture rearranging has really slowed down.  A lot.  It used to be a weekly occurrence, but it’s now a few times a year.  It’s not as easy to “try things on” as it used to be and I find that I get the “furniture shuffling bug” out of my system at the studio. Jeff and my oldest son, Marshall, were sick this weekend, so my parents took Calvin, our youngest, to an Easter egg hunt and out to lunch to get him out of the house.  I was stuck inside, though, holding puke pots, administering medicine, taking temperatures and sanitizing everything the sick boys looked at.

Pine Cone Hill Giveaway

When I revealed my parent’s bedroom makeover a couple of weeks ago, I shared that I would be hosting a giveaway for some Pine Cone Hill bedding and here it is! Pine Cone Hill furnished the bedding for this room makeover and offered to give away one Boyfriend Matelasse Coverlet in the color and size of your choosing to one of my readers!  This coverlet is available in 13 colors from white and ivory to orange and peacock and all sorts of colors in between.  My mom has the matelasse in Sky, which is a beautiful blue/green.   In the picture above, the spread is folded around a feather comforter, so it’s actually thinner than it appears and has a little stretch to it.  My mom loves the weight of it at the foot of their bed, since it’s not too heavy. She loved it so much, in fact, that she

dear reader | to the one who doesn’t know what color to paint her walls

When I shared the plan for my mom’s bedroom makeover, I received this comment from Judy… “Hi Marian, I love the color palette!  I know that using fabric is a good way to pick your paint colors.  But, what if you don’t have that kind of choice? My dining room is in the middle of my house, no windows, neutral floor color (carpet).  There isn’t any type of “jumping off point”, which always gets me stuck when trying to pick a paint color.  Any suggestions?  Thanks so much!” Dear Judy (and to others who feel a little stuck when choosing a wall color), Picking out a paint color can definitely be intimidating.  It’s not because of the lack of options, but because of the plethora of options.  You can literally paint your walls any color.  So, out of multiple fan decks with thousands of colors, not to mention all of the variations of the colors

kim’s coastal bedroom makeover | the reveal

My parent’s bedroom makeover, officially called “Kim’s Coastal Bedroom Makeover” here on the blog, is finally finished!! This is a looooong post, so you might want to get a snack to enjoy while you’re reading this one. It’s been a long time since I shared the before pictures of this room, so let me give you a then and now rundown before we get into the details. This is how the room looked when my mom first asked me to help with their master bedroom… And how it looks now… Before… And now… And now… You can see that the furniture arrangement in the room and the pieces we used stayed the same. The biggest change is that we filled the big, blank wall with custom built-ins that were a bit of a group effort, but my dad and I built them in large part.  They are made out of poplar boards,

my favorite jute rug

You may have noticed that I really like natural fiber rugs.  Specifically jute.  I love that they offer a neutral backdrop and a  gorgeous texture to any space.  They also fit with a wide variety of decor styles AND they are inexpensive to boot. I have a few different varieties in my house and studio… …but I have discovered the one that is my favorite. It’s a flat-woven braided jute rug.  It doesn’t seem to shed quite as much as other jute rugs and the flat weave feels nice underfoot. I first came across this rug style when I was shopping for Megan’s home office… It’s the Shay Jute Rug from Pier One Imports (and it’s actually on clearance now)! I have since purchased an 8 x 10 rug for my studio from Joss & Main. The floors in the studio are very orange, so I have found I really need

adding storage to a tiny bathroom

Remember the upstairs bathroom that I worked on last year?  It is just the sweetest bathroom and I smile every time I walk past it…even with toothpaste globbed in the sink and splattered on the mirror. The only downside is that it is really tiny and doesn’t have any storage.  None at all.  Not a cabinet or shelf or hooks or anything.  And, with a pedestal sink, there aren’t many places to set your stuff. So, I added a glass shelf to the right of the sink.  We set a few extra rolls of toilet paper up there and it gives a place for guests to set their toiletries.  (The boys don’t have anything beyond a toothbrush, so I have an antique alarm clock and little boxwood topiary up there for now.) I would’ve preferred no shelf at all, I think, but a glass one allows the paper to still

Kim’s coastal bedroom | installing the built-ins

The room makeover for my mom and dad is finally nearing completion!  I am planning to photograph the finished room later this week.  We finally got over the biggest hurdle in the room, the built-ins. I have assisted Jeff with building cabinets and shelves and I felt like it was something my dad and I could tackle, even though it was a bit ambitious.  I drew up the design and, over several weeks, many of us worked together on the building, finishing, and finally the installation.   It was a huge learning process for my dad and me, but we are so pleased with how they turned out.  They’ve been sitting in five pieces in my parent’s garage, each waiting their turn to be painted and finished.  Now, you know I like to use milk paint for just about everything, but we opted for primer and latex in order to

why I use my silver everyday

I’ve talked about this before, but it’s worth talking about again. When I shared pictures of my new drawer organizers, I received a few comments and questions about my flatware.  The most common one was, “Do you really use your silver everyday?” The answer is yes, I really do.  Even with two young boys, I do.  Even with a husband who would be content using plastic picnic ware, I do. It wasn’t always like that.  I used to use a $20/set Oneida pattern that we received as a wedding gift.  It was a common set, so I added onto it over the years with pieces I found from thrift stores.  I never really loved it, but it was just what we used and I didn’t question it. I did finally purchase some new flatware from Pottery Barn, but it didn’t wear very well and the scale was so large that the
