workshop preview & farmhouse style ramblings

Today was a big day.  We hosted our very first workshop in the Mustard Seed Studio!  Twelve delightful ladies attended and I think it’s safe to say that we all had an amazing time.  Here are a few pictures as a preview, but I’ll be sharing more, of course.  For Design Ramblings this week, we decided to chat about another trend prominent on blogs, Pinterest and in magazines – Farmhouse style. Why do we think this is so popular and what are some ways you can bring that look to your house…

design ramblings | contentment with your home

Kriste and I thought we’d mix up the ramblings a bit and talk about contentment and how it relates to our homes.  I’ve written about contentment before and it’s something I’ve struggled with off and on.  I’m sure it’s something we all struggle with, especially in the day of blogs, magazines, Pinterest, HGTV…there are so many sources of inspiration, but they can also make you feel like what you have isn’t good enough.  It’s easy to stir up feelings of discontentment when taking in so much eye candy! As we’re working in the studio, Kriste and I often talk about heart issues, so we figured we’d carry that over into our ramblings…

design ramblings | sliding barn doors, paneling & painted fireplaces

It’s time for another Design Ramblings…  I hope you’re all enjoying these, because we sure are! I think Kriste and I are both getting more comfortable chatting together in this format.  Since it is “design ramblings”, most of the episodes will be us talking about a specific design-related subject, but we already have some field trips planned as well as videos that are more instructional. In this episode, we answer three questions from our first “fan letter”, which we were pretty excited about.  We talk through the sliding barn door trend, what to do with a house full of paneling and should you paint a fireplace… Yes, “soundproof-ness” is a word.   So, I ripped on diagonal paneling in the video.  Then, as I was looking for a picture of beautiful room with unpainted paneling, I remembered the room by Amy from The Little Farm Diary that I featured a few weeks ago.  Lo

home splurges – which were worth it & which weren’t

I shared yesterday that I want to write more posts about decorating your home on a real budget.  To me, that means looking for bargains, working with what you already have and mixing in a few special splurges here and there.  I thought I would share some of the splurges in my home and which ones were worth every penny and which ones left me disappointed.  Some of these splurges are things I bought and others I exchanged for writing about them on my blog.  This isn’t a sponsored post, though.  All of my obligations have been met and I don’t gain anything by saying nice things about any of these companies or products.  Just putting that out there before you read on with too much suspicion! Let’s start with a worth every penny. I bought the bed frame in our master bedroom a couple of years ago from Restoration Hardware.

wing chair drop cloth slipcovers

I try not to get too engrossed in my blog analytics and all of the numbers, but it’s interesting sometimes to check them out…see what’s popular and what is most often pinned.  One trend I’ve noticed is that my readers loved my drop cloth projects.  I still get questions about which ones I use and how I bleached them.  Well, I thought I would give an update on drop cloth slipcovers I made for a pair of wing chairs about five years ago…  These chairs have a great story.  This is what they (and my family room) looked like when we first moved in… Yes, they are the blue checked wing chairs.  (Ha!  I just noticed a bagel sandwich on the back of the sofa!)  Anyway, the chairs were put up for sale by some friends at a yard sale and, believe it or not, they didn’t sell!  So, I

design ramblings | color of the year

If you’re plugged into the design world, even a little, I’m sure you’ve heard about the color of the year announced by Pantone.  In 2015, it’s Marsala… In episode three of Design Ramblings, Kriste and I decided to discuss the 2015 color as well as the whole idea of a color of the year… I realized after I talked about the bluish/green paired with Marsala that those colors are both in the rug from my Opa’s house.  It actually looks amazing with the navy, cornflower, brick and even that pea green!  Whoever put these colors together had a wonderful eye.  I always feel like rugs are a challenge for me, but I do think they can be a great jumping off point for the design of a room.  As I mentioned in the video, we mixed our own version of Marsala with MMS milk paint just for fun.  The Pantone Marsala does have a

2014 Home Changes

As 2014 is winding down, I’ve been thinking about everything that’s happened over the past year.  I started looking through posts and pictures and enjoyed seeing all of the things I’ve done, the places I’ve been and the projects that were completed.  I figured I’d write a few posts sharing the highlights…my favorites and your favorites.  Let’s start with my house. What struck me as I looked back over pictures is how much has stayed the same.  The master bedroom and bathroom, half bath, kitchen, home office, upstairs bath and family room have stayed pretty much the same.  For the most part.  I’ve made tweaks and moved some furniture and things around, but nothing has been dramatically changed. Here are the things that have changed – This is how the living room looked in January… …and in December. The dining room in January… …and December. I’m planning to put a rug back

Christmas 2014 recap

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!!  I had a truly wonderful day with Jeff, my boys, my brother and his wife and my parents.  There was the usual frenzy of opening presents, but it was even more enjoyable this year because the boys are at such a sweet age.  They’re old enough to really get it, but young enough to run around in footie jammies all day. I received mostly gift cards (Anthro, Ulta, iTunes and ModCloth), a “zoodle” maker (for spiral-cutting vegetables), some Crocs that are lined (I wear my Crocs often, but my feet get cold in the winter) and a few other things. I set the table and did a lot of food prep the day before, so I was able to putter around the kitchen at a comfortable pace to get everything ready.  My mom and brother also made a few of the dishes, so it
