orange clove pomanders & free mrs. meyers

In recent years, I have enjoyed making most of my Christmas decorations from natural elements.  This year, I was inspired to make orange pomanders by Mrs. Meyer’s Orange & Clove holiday scent. I’ve been wanting to make them for a while, but this promotion gave me a good excuse. That’s right…  It’s that time, again!  If you’ve been thinking about joining Grove Collaborative and taking advantage of their FREE Mrs. Meyer’s promotion, here is another chance to do just that! If you haven’t heard of Grove Collaborative, let me share.  They are a company committed to carrying products that are uncompromisingly healthy, beautifully effective, sustainably minded, and amazingly affordable.  I started working with Grove as a blog sponsor, but I have since become a regular customer.  They carry products I use and love (like Tom’s toothpaste and Mrs. Meyer’s laundry detergent) and I can have them delivered to my door for

seasons of home | christmas kitchen

Soooo…in blog land, it’s time to decorate for Christmas and, I must admit, I’m just not there, yet. I am usually anxiously awaiting the time when I can turn on the Christmas music, bring out the bins of decor, and start baking gingerbread. But, we just moved here late this summer and haven’t hit our rhythm and I honestly don’t feel ready for Christmas!  Decorating for Christmas feels like a finishing touch on a readied foundation and, while we’ve gotten a lot done, it’s not where I want it to be. On top of that, I shared on my Instagram Stories that I injured my shoulder last week.  It has been improving, but I learned that I have a partial labral tear, calcific tendonitis, an inflamed bursa, and advanced arthritis! I don’t have to have surgery, thankfully, but I do have to take it easy, which I’m not good at

Seasons of Home | Fall Porch

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by .  I shop from them regularly as a customer, so this was a natural sponsorship.  All words and opinions expressed in this post are my own. One thing that excited me about our new home was the porch!  I only had a small stoop at our last house, but this house has a nice front porch with lots of potential for decorating for the seasons. We still have some power washing and window cleaning to do, but the porch is coming along and looking cozy for fall. Decorating for fall is easy, because you can put out some pumpkins and mums and hang a festive wreath on the door and call it a day. I selected the , which is neutral and transitional.  I also saw potential to add things (and take them away) to make it suit specific seasons.  For fall, I added

seasons of home | fall living room

I’ll be really honest here… The only reason I decorated my living room for fall was for this post.  And there it is. Before you bail on this post, though, let me tell you something more… As I started clipping eucalyptus and tucking it in around pumpkins, grabbing apples from the bowl in the kitchen and mini pinecones from the dough bowl in the dining room, there was a joy discovered that went beyond having a styled mantel for a blog post. I haven’t had a mantel for at least 15 years and I hadn’t even thought about the decorating possibilities beyond hanging stockings for Christmas.  I even had a “duh” moment when I was wondering where I was going to put the greens and gourds I bought. I fiddled and played and, when I stepped back, our mantle, and the whole room by extension, looked cozy and ready for

(working with what you have) fall table

Last year, I participated in the Farmhouse Holiday Series and it was such a fun blog-hop to be a part of that I agreed to participate again this year.  I like saying yes to fun things and collaborations with creative people.  But then I realized that only about 2% of my house is finished in my colors and style… And I really felt that as I was working on this fall tablescape.  It was supposed to be in the dining room, but my dining room is dark beige right now with carpeting, so I decided to shoot in my half-painted kitchen on a half-finished table with chairs that are too big and, by the way, also aren’t finished. I was very close to bailing at the last minute, but I had to resist that urge. The seasons change and we can still decorate for them even if everything isn’t finished,

Pumpkin Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

A fall dessert using a fall favorite comes to life in this cookie. I don’t often think about cooking with pumpkin, but there is a lot of goodness pumpkins can bring to the culinary table!  I was in the mood for something chocolatey and cookies are always a winner at my house, so I made a variation of a Pumpkin Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe I found on Taste of Home.  I made a few tweaks to the recipe, like adding salt, using old fashioned oats instead of quick-cooking, and used dark chocolate chips. I like the old fashioned oats vs. the quick-cooking, because they retain more of their texture once the cookie is baked. One tip when making cookies is to use a cookie scoop or a tablespoon to dole out the cookies on the baking sheet, so they are uniform.  If the cookies are all different sizes, you’ll

spring cleaning

It’s that time of year!  Well…almost.  Our February has been so warm and mild that it has felt like spring.  We’ve even thrown the windows wide open a few days and I’ve gotten the itch to start some cleaning, home maintenance, and organization…all of which, I suppose, can be classified as spring cleaning. I have started on a few things, like cleaning out the hanging space in my closet, washing all of the quilts in the house, and reworking the open shelves in the bathroom… But cleaning and organizing can be like dominos and I’m realizing that some nooks and crannies need a good scrubbing. It was about this time that I received an e-mail, asking if I would be interested in partnering with eBay on spring cleaning.  My first thought was, perfect timing!  Then I realized that I had never thought of checking out eBay for tools and supplies for spring cleaning

Christmas 2016 recap

For the second year in a row, I actually took a break over the Christmas holidays.  I did some inbox maintenance and spent a little time on business stuff here and there, but I didn’t write any blog posts and I didn’t work at the studio.  I was even pretty quiet on social media. I spent a lot of time, like entire days, in my jammies.  I played video games and board games with Jeff and the boys.  I watched TV at night without a computer in my lap.  I was a general unproductive loaf, which is not usually my style, but it was welcome and needed. Unfortunately, I seem to be coming down with a cold or something, so I’m not feeling ready to hit my stride at full speed just yet, but it’s time to start at least heading in that direction. Before I get into my plans, changes, ideas, and
