free shopping resource & $250 RetailMeNot giveaway

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by RetailMeNot.  All opinions and experiences shared are, as always, honest and my own. It’s that time of year.  Along with the decorating and baking and parties, there is shopping.  (And wouldn’t it be nice to win an extra $250 VISA gift card to spend on some of those expenses?  Scroll down to enter the giveaway.) And not just present shopping, but the-boys-have-a-Christmas-concert-and-need-black-pants-and-a-white-dress-shirt shopping and Calvin-needs-a-new-pair-of-of-winter-gloves shopping and the-heel-on-my-favorite-pair-of-boots-is-flapping-so-it’s-time-to-look-for-a-new-pair shopping.  (I am planning on getting them repaired as well, but they have worked hard for many years and they are looking tired.) Believe it or not, I don’t particularly enjoy months with lots of shopping.  Drop me in the middle of an antique market and shopping is my favorite, but drop me in the middle of a busy mall during the holidays and it’s definitely not.  I also get a little stressed trying to fit

Christmas porch

Again, I couldn’t help myself. Once our porch was stripped of the pumpkins that were past their prime and the frost-bitten topiaries, it looks a little sad.  And it certainly doesn’t help that we don’t have one evergreen plant or bush in the front gardens.  Everything is brown and leafless, just emphasizing the ugly side of winter and the lack of attention we’ve paid to the landscaping. The garden beds will have to wait until spring, but I felt like some garlands and lights would do a lot to dress things up for Christmas. I bought two mixed live garlands to hang around the front door and front window and a pair of potted evergreens with some clipped live greens tucked in around them.  I also dug some indoor-outdoor string lights from my Christmas bins to wrap around the greenery. To hang the light-wrapped garlands, I tapped a large nail

dining room christmas tree

I wasn’t sure if I was going to get a second tree this year.  It’s been a little hard to really dig into the holiday decorating with it being our first year in this house, but as Christmas crept closer, I just couldn’t resist.  I mean, I had acquired an antique goat cart this summer with the idea that it would hold a Christmas tree.  So, it just had to happen. I picked out a squat spruce tree, which somehow seemed perfect for the goat cart… The tree is kept in a wooden bucket with a box and a paint bucket liner inside to hold the trunk and the water.  I also added a couple of rocks from the yard to keep the box from shifting. Because the tree is so squat, the branches rest against the wall, making it a little sturdier in my make-shift stand. It’s decorated with

Christmas foyer

For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to have a staircase with pretty railings, bannisters, and a newel post.  Specific, I know, but I just have a thing for staircases.  Maybe that came from growing up in small, military apartments… Well, I finally get to live in a house with an awesome staircase and I was so excited about decorating it for Christmas. I swagged cedar garland along the rail, using some green twine-covered florist wire to secure it in place.  I also wrapped the garland with the  and added my mini-stocking advent calendar along the top bannister. The rocking horse got its usual laurel wreath around his neck, too. Now, as beautiful as this looks, it has been a mess!  The greens have been shedding every day, so I have to keep on it with a hand-held vacuum.  Fun times!  I might be going faux next year. I’m

Seasons of Home | Milk-Painted Gift Boxes

I’m so excited to share, that for the final post in the Seasons of Home series, we’re all sharing projects completed with MMS Milk Paint!   Not only is it inspiring for me to see my product used by such talented ladies, but it’s such an encouragement that they were willing to work with my brand as a sponsor. So, I decided to do a fun, little project with it, and made some milk-painted gift boxes… I started with papier mache boxes I purchased at Hobby Lobby. And I mixed up some Shutter Gray and Tricycle, since those colors work well with the ribbons and papers I purchased and had leftover from last year.     I just brushed a coat of milk paint directly onto the papier mache boxes.  That surface is perfect for milk paint, because it soaks right in. I waited for the boxes to dry, which only

the 90’s called…

I usually don’t put up my tree before Thanksgiving, but this year, I had some Christmas posts I committed to and putting up a tree was a part of that.  I’m no stranger to setting up a tree at odd times, though.  And late November isn’t odd compared to some of the times I’ve had a tree up.  One year, I had our tree up until February (for a magazine shoot), and then another one set up in April (for freelance projects), and then again in September (for retail), and finally in December for, you know, actual Christmas. Needless to say, my boys, who were quite young at the time, were a bit confused. So, back to this year’s tree.  I started with the wool pom-pom garlands (which I have collected over the years.)  The tiny ones were from , maybe three years ago.  The larger poms are from and

romantic homes & celebrating everyday life

Since Thanksgiving, a cough and cold has been kicking my rear!  Between that and my shoulder that is still sore, I have been loafing a lot more than usual.  So, while there is cleaning that could be done and decorating that I want to do and paint brushes that are calling my name, I have had to put all of that off until I’m feeling up to it. So, today, I am just sharing some holiday/Christmas inspiration found in good, old-fashioned magazines. The first one is a new magazine published by Country Sampler – Celebrating Everyday Life.  It’s exciting for me to introduce it to you, because one of my long-time blog friends, Jennifer Carroll, is the editor of the special issue publication! The magazine is filled with pretty pictures, recipes, and decorating ideas and it also includes my PA house decorated for Christmas… Jennifer also included The Home Design

a reliable, realistic noble fir

Let me just say that I’m a big fan of live trees.  I am, however, not a fan when they dry out and look like this two days before Christmas… The branches that were once strong and up-turned, were sagging to the point that the garland and ornaments were sliding off.  And this was with proper watering, trimming the trunk after bringing it home, buying it freshly cut, adding sugar to the water, etc. Not only did that one die, but our two other smaller trees died as well – a lesser issue, since our presents weren’t going to circle them on Christmas morning, but still a bummer. We replaced our tree two days before Christmas, but I immediately started browsing the Balsam Hill website for realistic-looking artificial Christmas trees.  Being a live-tree-loving-girl, if I’m going to switch to the reliability of an artificial tree, it has to look really
