finally, an antique haul…

A few things happened last week that haven’t happened in months…since February or March.  No 1 – We had a church service!  It was outdoors, but it was so awesome to see our church family, sing and worship together, and hear from our senior pastor.  No 2 – The boys got haircuts!  That might not sound like a big deal to you, but if you’ve ever had to chase down middle-school boys to wash their greasy mop of hair, then you know how nice it is to have it short!  I tried to cut it for them, but I made the mistake of cutting Sebastian’s hair first and they judge my abilities on that hack job.  Fair enough. No 3 – I got to go to some antique stores!  I had my mask and hand-sanitizer right with me and I drove separately from my friend as a precaution, but I

the handmade needlebook

Well, I spent the morning writing and then planning and making some purchases for upcoming projects.  I am excited to get a few rooms that are underway finished (like the master bedroom and sewing room) and I’ll be starting some new projects that have been on my list for a while.  This is how it seems to go for me.  For a few months, I’ll work on small, quieter projects like painting and tweaking, making slipcovers, etc…stuff I can do myself that is relatively inexpensive.  And then, all at the same time, I’ll start some larger projects that we’ve been planning and budgeting for.  It’s exciting and nerve-wracking simultaneously! Of course, I’ll be sharing more along the way… But, today, I’m sharing about a lovely gift I received from a woman who has become a dear friend to me – Mary of Trout Lily Hill.  She is one of the sweetest

Sue’s Ironstone Palette

A few weeks ago, I spotted these amazing palettes on @whiteflowerfarmhouse feed and my heart started fluttering.  It was a little hard to believe that I was looking past all of the ironstone pitchers, but my eyes made a beeline for those beauties.  I immediately sent a message to inquire about purchasing one.  As I was making the inquiry, Lori informed me that it wasn’t just a vintage palette, but it was made of ironstone!  An ironstone paint palette!!  Are you kidding me?  It’s like it was made just for me. It’s unfortunate that The White Flower Farmhouse store (and so many other businesses) have to be closed, but I love that I’ve been able to shop from them online.  I’ve been drooling over Lori’s shop for a long time! Anyway, I was able to claim the palette before anyone else and it was mine.  I was over-the-moon. Let me

german ironstone cake stands, a belgian bulb crate, & $100 giveaway

When I shared about the antique butcher’s rack from Maria of Dreamy Whites, I shared a preview of a few other things she sent me.  They were worth sharing in their own post because the items are so special. I’ve been sitting here for several minutes trying to think of how to describe the unboxing of these gifts and I’ve found it difficult.  I think it has to do with the overwhelming generosity of Maria’s gifts.  Not only was she generous, but she seemed to pick out the perfect pieces for me; items she knew would have a place in my home and that would touch my heart, bringing joy.  They wouldn’t just be appreciated and liked, they would be cherished and loved for a long time.  They would join the ranks of some of my favorite things. I received two large boxes from Dreamy Whites and I immediately felt

latest antique haul in Cannon Falls & Red Wing

A couple of weeks ago, I gave in to the itch to get out of the house strictly for fun and, while the floors were being refinished, I went to a few antique stores with my friend, Cheri.  We drove separate cars, wore masks, and doused ourselves in hand sanitizer, and took every precaution we could short of staying home.  I didn’t find any of the larger items on my list for all of the room projects that are in the works, but I did end up with a pretty nice antique haul. I bought the glass jelly jars for $12.  They are so sweet and the perfect size for a little fruit salad or for whisking up a single egg. I found a roll of heavy cotton twine that I thought would be fun to crochet with.  It’s a good weight for dishcloths… This is such a fun find…

hanging a butcher’s rack over the stove

When I received another box of goodies from Maria of Dreamy Whites, one box contained a long metal rack with pointed hooks.  I wasn’t sure what it was, so I asked Maria and she told me it was a French butcher’s rack used when making sausages.  No matter what it was once used for, I could pretty quickly envision many different uses for it in our home. The most obvious one was hanging it above our stove.  It looked like it might be the perfect size and I have always wanted to hang something there.  It seemed like it needed something.  I’ve tried signs, ironstone platters, breadboards, a tole tray, and a large silver platter and none of them seemed to work right.  I had always wondered about the idea of hanging a small rack to hold a few small copper pots, but I wasn’t sure how I would mount

the best gift

Saturday was my 42 birthday.  It started off with apologies from Jeff and the boys that they couldn’t go out and buy me gifts and couldn’t take me out to a restaurant.  It would be another day hunkering down at home.  The fact that I wasn’t disappointed was surprising to me.  I’ve always been a “big birthday person.”  I love presents and cake and surprises. To plan for the day, I bought the ingredients to make a copycat version of Olive Garden’s lemon cream cake, but there have been bigger things than online shopping for potential birthday presents to occupy my time and thoughts.  We would just unceremoniously move some cash from the gifts line item to my personal spending money in our budget and I could buy something later. It was actually the precautions we’ve been taking to keep our family, particularly our type 1 diabetic son, insulated from

my silver patterns

I often receive comments about my flatware, even if I am posting about food or styling or something else entirely.  I will admit that I have a thing for flatware and have inherited and collected some beautiful pieces. The pieces I inherited from at least five different women in my family are stunning and hard to ignore, which is the main reason why I started using them as our everyday flatware several years ago.  They are just too pretty to keep in a box 363 days of the year, only making appearances at Thanksgiving and Christmas. So, despite being valuable heirlooms, we use them every day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  I doubt my boys remember using anything else and I know they just see them as regular ole forks and spoons. HERE is a post about why I use my silver every day and how I clean and care
