Slipcovered Chair & Latest Finds

The dentist office called… …they want their fabric back.  Oh, why on God’s green earth would someone want to cover a chair in fabric that looks like it belongs as wallpaper in a doctor’s office?  Why would any doctor or dentist want that on their walls, anyway?  I don’t know, but they all do.  Anyway, someone did this horrible thing to these chairs.  It’s like a pretty girl wearing an ugly dress to the prom.  So, I made these girls new dresses.  They need a bit more ironing, but cut me a break…they look a lot better! My dear friend, Leslie, gave me this set of four chairs.  The shape is great, but you already know how I feel about the fabric.  I made custom slipcovers for two of them out of drop cloths.  Much better.  These are coming to the barn sale set-up with me on Monday…after being ironed.

New Finds & A Mirror Makeover

It was one of those nights.  My three year old came downstairs crying and burning up.  He was up throughout the night with a crazy high fever and was delirious at times.  This morning, my hubby took the sick boy to the doctor’s office and we decided it would be best to get our healthy boy out of the house, which was my job.  What’s a girl to do when trying to get out of the house, but go hit some yard sales?  (On a side note, the doctors were pretty worried about my son, but he is doing much better this afternoon  We’re making sure he drinks his “get better juice” and uses his “get better blanket” and he’s being a real trooper.) It just so happens that this is the weekend of Pippin Fest, a yard sale/craft show kind of event in Fairfield, PA.  Most of the town sets up their yard

A Star Burst & A Trumeau

I have two new mirrors in my house, now.  One found and one made.   Some free antique spindles, a $1.00 craft mirror, hot glue and a scrap piece of hard board came together to make a chic star burst mirror.  This is my kind of craft.  I have enough of these old spindles to make one more, so I’ll do a full tutorial on this.  I had to make sure it wouldn’t look lame, first.  It was super simple and could easily be reproduce with chop sticks, dowel rods, paint brush handles…lots of things.  These spindles came out of the Gettysburg sewing factory and they are supposed to be used like this… …but, I don’t have any more of the “hubs”, so this was a good way to transform them into something else.  I love the varying lengths and patina on the wood.  Among all of the other things I’m

Ironstone 101

I have received a lot of questions lately about ironstone, what it is, and how to identify it. I am certainly not an expert, but I have been collecting ironstone for about ten years now and I have a pretty large collection (I’ve lost count), so I know it when I see it. I remember reading a magazine years ago, drooling over the ironstone collections in some of the featured homes.  I loved how beautiful and simple it was and immediately added it to my “to collect” list right away.  I found a pitcher several months later and the collection has grown from there.  I’ve been fickle about other things I hunt for when shopping, but never about ironstone.  It’s been a constant over the years. Pieces of ironstone can be found for only a few dollars (or a dime, like this past weekend), but pieces that are very old and in perfect

I’m a girl. What can I say?

Today was a great shopping day…and I love those.  I’m a girl.  What can I say?  It started out early.  My MIL and youngest boy set out to one of my favorite bi-annual community yard sales.  Right off the bat, I spotted a house that had loads of antiques for sale.  Most of it was a little too expensive for me (for resale purposes), but I did buy a few old books, a huge frame, and a folding wooden chair.  All for $4.00.  Then, we were off and running.  We had walked through most of the neighborhood and I hadn’t bought another thing (except puzzles for my 3 1/2 year old, cookies for the boy and a brownie for me.)  This day was going to be a bummer.  Then, I spotted a Frenchy chest of drawers with great hardware (and stickers and a nasty paint job.)  It was very sturdy, solid

Goodwill Luck & Getting Organized

I hit the right Goodwill at the right moment on the right day.  The Goodwill store in Westminster, MD is big and always has a lot of cool stuff, but it can be a little pricey sometimes.  Today, they were overloaded with furniture and almost every employee looked like a college student who didn’t care about fetching a high price on something “old.”  So, I scored a bunch of really great things for a song.  I got this chair… …a vintage wooden rocking horse (that I’m going to paint to look more sophisticated)… …a ratty, but not stinky, ottoman… …and an amazing antique china cabinet, which I have not snapped a photo of, yet.  I also got some silver and three Pyrex bowls.  It was a jackpot for someone like me.  We also hit Lowes and I found a couple of goodies there as well.  I needed some more drop cloths to make

One of my favorites…

It was my very first time ever at an auction and I really didn’t know what to expect.  I was nervous about raising my number to bid.  I didn’t fully understand what the auctioneer was saying.  I was trying to work two rooms at one time.  It was overwhelming.  By the end of the night, I was a pro and was leaving with a lighter wallet and a van full of really neat things.  I won this gorgeous pair of side tables, which were originally joined to make a vanity.  They were already a perfect shade of aqua and I simply added some painted details and glaze to put my stamp on them.  Trust me when I tell you that I hauled these all over my house to try to find a spot for them, but I did not have room.  I took them with me to the Lucketts fair last year.  For

A Pair of Clogs, a Pillow, and More…

My mad dash to get things ready for Lucketts continues and will continue for a few more weeks.  I feel the lure to work on my living room, but there is too much paying work to be done.  I had this vintage pair of clogs from my aunt, but they were a yellowish pine and not very cute.  I decided to paint them using a technique to make them look chippy and naturally worn.  There’s something “telling” in distressing with a palm sander, so I wanted to try something different and I’m in love with this new technique.  These are coming to Lucketts with me to sell.  Sigh…maybe they won’t sell and I can keep them.  I also finished this pillow for a client.  She is having me make another “Gasthaus” sign like the one I just sold right off my wall.  There’s an old shelf in our basement that I am
