“Can I pull it off?”

Disclosure: This post is a sponsored collaboration with Magnolia Pearl.  We received a great response from our last collaboration, so we decided to work together again!  As always, all opinions and words are my own. I saw a pair of shoes in an e-mail from Magnolia Pearl a few weeks ago and right away, I was smitten.  They look like antique leather baby shoes, but they are shoes for adults!  Oh my…I couldn’t send Red an e-mail fast enough to see if they had them in my size. While I was waiting for the reply, doubt crept in…  “Can I pull them off?”  I’ve been marinating on this question and how I squashed my own excitement for a pair of shoes I was immediately drawn to and excited about wearing.  And I realized I do that to myself all the time.   Can I pull this off?   What is that question

the first scratch in the hardwood floors

I think one of the reasons that I like old things is that they are already worn.  They wear scratches, dents, dings, chips, cracks, and crazing, and any new damage that is done to them will likely go unnoticed.  They are already imperfect and there is no pressure to keep them pristine.  Well, newly installed and freshly refinished hardwood floors do come with some amount of pressure to keep them scratch-free for as long as humanly possible. For me, that turned out to be less than 24 hours. I knew that these hardwood floors would scratch, because we have them on our stairs, in the dining room, my office, and 15-year-old floors in the kitchen and eating area.  All of them are scratched to some degree from the pets, from furniture scooting, from dropping things, from kids, from life.  I knew these floors, which are in the two most trafficked

June’s Books of the Week

It’s hard to believe we’re over halfway through the year!  Time flies when you’re stuck at home doing projects!  I have really missed my regular outings to Barnes & Noble, but I have been ordering newly released and used books online and have pulled out some of my favorite books to share from my stash.  So here are my picks for June’s Books of the Week… I bought this book shortly after it came out, in one of my last in-person trips to B&N this year.  It is such a sweet, encouraging, and inspiring book of poetry.  Her words and writing style resonated with me and it seemed fitting to select it as my pick on this particular week.   This poem is one of my favorites… If you don’t follow Morgan on Instagram, I would highly suggest it.  She shares her poetry and art there as well. favorite recent online garden purchases (and savings)

Disclosure:  This post is sponsored by Wikibuy.  All opinions expressed in this post are honest and my own. I shared about Wikibuy a few weeks ago and have continued to use it while shopping online (which I’m doing a lot more these days!)  I say “use it”, but I really don’t have to do anything.  I simply shop and, when I’m checking out, the friendly Wikibuy box will pop into the top right corner automatically and let me know if there are coupon codes to try or if Wikibuy Credits are available with the purchase.   I am generally an online shopper, anyway.  It was a habit that was started when we moved to a two-stoplight town in PA that was 30-40 minutes from most stores.  But I’ve learned that it’s a quicker way to find exactly when I’m looking for.   And these days, we’re ordering almost everything online, even

the handmade needlebook

Well, I spent the morning writing and then planning and making some purchases for upcoming projects.  I am excited to get a few rooms that are underway finished (like the master bedroom and sewing room) and I’ll be starting some new projects that have been on my list for a while.  This is how it seems to go for me.  For a few months, I’ll work on small, quieter projects like painting and tweaking, making slipcovers, etc…stuff I can do myself that is relatively inexpensive.  And then, all at the same time, I’ll start some larger projects that we’ve been planning and budgeting for.  It’s exciting and nerve-wracking simultaneously! Of course, I’ll be sharing more along the way… But, today, I’m sharing about a lovely gift I received from a woman who has become a dear friend to me – Mary of Trout Lily Hill.  She is one of the sweetest

May’s Books of the Week

I suppose I should share May’s Books of the Week before we get into July!  It’s just been that kind of month.  We can’t keep all of the spinning plates in the air all the time, right? It’s been great to dig into projects, though, and it’s okay that it’s distracted me a little. So, here are my picks for May… I purchased this book when it first came out and it is absolutely fantastic for those interested in oil or acrylic painting.  I bet it covers more material than you would get in a college class.  It is so thorough, yet approachable. It’s not just filled with information, but step-by-step demonstrations that show a variety of classical techniques. Yes, art has a strong artistic component (hence the name), but it is also highly technical.  If you learn and study the techniques your skill as an artist will improve. It

for the love of old books & burning Charlotte Brontë

I shared yesterday in my Instagram stories that I know the stress that comes with shopping a popular online sale.  I have been on the buying end of that scenario. Just a few weeks ago, I was watching an Instagram account I follow, @sketchbookcoshop, give previews of their upcoming sale.  They make sketchbooks out of antique and vintage books, so each of their pieces is one-of-a-kind.  One, in particular, caught my fancy, so I sent a message to them.  “Can I purchase this one?” “Sorry, you have to wait for the sale.” I’ve said those very words to many people as I was getting ready for Lucketts Spring Markets.  I always struggled with the tension of making an immediate sale vs. saving the inventory for people who were paying to attend the event.  And do I offer holds for people shopping on the VIP day?  How and when do I

project progress & more happy mail…

The tail end of last week and the weekend were again filled with projects around the home and yard.  I did take time to rest and relax, too, but I want to keep things moving when I’m on a roll.  I can see the finish line on a few of the projects I’m bouncing between and I’m ready to get them checked off my list. So, this weekend, I spent some more time painting the trim we installed a couple of weeks ago.  I finished the caulking, priming, and painting in the master bedroom on Saturday and it looks so good!  I’ll share the final results soon. I also got a coat of primer and the first coat of paint on two walls in the sewing room, including the wall with the windows.  Painting window casings is such a pain, so I’m glad to just have one more coat to
