what you share matters

As I shared yesterday, I purchased a twenty-drawer antique cabinet from Ekster antiques and, when I drove to the barn to pick it up, I bought another large piece.  I bought this gorgeous European glass front cabinet that was way too big to fit in my van.  The wheels in my head were turning as I contemplated how I was going to get the piece home. Our truck bed was too small, but maybe we could strap it in?  No…too risky.  I was going to have my dad drive a truck to Lucketts in case I needed it for a large purchase and maybe he could pick it up for me?  Could we have it delivered? Every scenario I went to was about having someone else drive a vehicle that would be large enough to pick it up.  That’s just not something I do. With all of the furniture I

settling into a new home

Crying seems to be inevitable in the early days of a move.  You’re tired.  You’re emotional.  You’re feeling raw.  You’re relieved to be settled yet you feel entirely unsettled, upended.  The familiarity of your things clashes with the unfamiliarity of a new place.  It’s the biggest purchase of your life and you have only spent a few hours walking through empty rooms.  This house that you filled a truckload of paperwork for and dreamed about is now an overwhelming reality. It’s your home, but it doesn’t feel like home.  It will, but not yet. We’ve been doing all of the usual moving-in things.  Having a washer & dryer delivered, opening boxes, putting things away, and then moving them a second and third time until it feels like they might be in the right place.  A steady stream of tradesmen has been coming through to give us estimates on new windows,

where we are landing…

Yesterday, it became official.  The Parsons family will be moving to Washington County, MD!  (Cue, Maryland, My Maryland…) Oh man, there is so much to tell you! So much has been going on in the background as I’ve been writing about visiting family, taking care of my broken foot, hitting used bookstores, and buying antiques for our future home.  It all started with a phone call in June in response to a resume Jeff submitted.  When Jeff finished that initial call, we sat together on the porch of the Airbnb in Rochester, MN and he told me about it.  We both felt like this might be “the one” and we were excited about returning to an area that was somewhat familiar (it’s about an hour from where we used to live in PA), but there was a long way to go, a lot of interviews, questionnaires, meetings, and a lot

August 2022 Favorites

I wish I could say the month of August was all good things and favorites enveloped by constant grace and poise.  But, as is often the case with life, it was a rollercoaster of peaks and valleys.  It was days of peace and ones of impatience.  It was the start of school in the midst of uncertainty.  It was weariness from not having our own home, our own beds, our own stuff.  But, it was also full of gratitude for a family who so generously open their homes to us and take care of our sweet animals.  It was the enjoyment felt as new acquaintances grow in familiarity and potential friendships are on the horizon.  It was being able to walk again after a month of relying on crutches and a scooter. It’s the peace in knowing that this is all just a brief season, that God is in complete

July 2022 Favorites

Despite being in a season of life that has been all about upheaval and waiting, July was a good month full of favorites.  I actually like writing these favorites post for that very reason…it gives me an opportunity to look at the past few weeks with a lens of gratitude instead of complaint.  My foot is still broken, I was told to stay off of it and use crutches and a knee scooter, we’re waiting for so many pieces to fall into place regarding our future, but there were sweet times, beautiful moments, and things I thoroughly enjoyed that are worth sharing with you. I hope whatever season of life you are in, you can still find some favorites.  Here are mine from July 2022… July 4th in Gettysburg, PA We spent many July 4ths in Gettysburg and I forgot how enjoyable it is.  If you’re a little rusty on

classic navy & white wardrobe rebuild

Oh my.  Let’s go completely off the rails here and talk about clothes.  It had been over two years since I went out to an actual store to do some in-person clothes shopping.  I have ordered a few things online, but they were mostly sweatpants and t-shirts, which is my default when I don’t have anywhere special to go.  When you’re doing everything online, why do you need to bother with things like nice jeans, cute shoes, and structured jackets?  I’m sure I’m not the only one who had dressy clothes languishing in their closet.  But now I’m going places and I realized that some of the clothes weren’t fitting well or I just wasn’t excited about wearing them.  Moving was a great time to do a closet clean-out and, as I did with my furniture, I just kept my favorite things.  Some linen dresses and tunics, a yummy green

the VA lake house

Where in the world is the Parsons’ family this week?  It almost sounds like we’re off on some great adventure, but we’re really just bumming around staying with family and in homes that are open to us!  I suppose that is an adventure of sorts and we are trying to make it feel like that.  We had the opportunity to stay in my cousin’s lake house for about a week and it has been such a treat.  The house itself is cute and comfortable and I’ve enjoyed sitting on the dock watching the swans, people floating by on kayaks and the clouds.  It’s been peaceful, restful, and felt like a bit of a vacation from all of the car trips. We are now heading back to Raleigh, NC for a few days before we head back north to Pennsylvania, but before we leave, I thought I would show you our

the reader’s corner | used books

When we arrived in Raleigh last week, my mother-in-law started going over potential outings.  She shared the names of a few thrift stores she thought I might want to check out and she mentioned that my niece, Lizzy, could give me a comprehensive tour of the best-used book shops in the area.  Well, I perked up at that!  Lizzy and I have always had a lot of interests in common from theatre to crochet.  Now, we share a love of poking around used book stores to build our personal libraries.  We chatted about what kind of books I look for (art, design, decorating) and she knew just the spot to take me – The Reader’s Corner. I was actually so distracted at the thought of all of those used books that I forgot to bring my cell phone with me, so I couldn’t take pictures!  The one above was sourced
