Before and Afters

the evolution of my house | part 3 | the home office

Thanks so much for all of the great feedback on this series.  I’ve enjoyed going through my house in a bit more detail and seeing how far this home, that was not love-at-first-site, has really come along.  If you missed parts one and two, here they are… Part 1 – the evolution of the living room Part 2 – the evolution of the dining room And here we go with part three, the home office. This was the room that had me most stumped when we first moved in.  It was originally the kitchen in the 1940’s part of the house, but when the addition was built on the back, including a new kitchen, this room became little more than a glorified hallway.  An ugly glorified hallway at that.  One I would just slink through on the way to somewhere else.  The floor was a patchwork of linoleum with some exposed

a generous gift & hydrangeas

Well, I’m writing to you today with four less teeth than I had yesterday!  Yep, at 36 years old, I finally had my wisdom teeth removed.  So, I’ve had my mouth stuffed with gauze and a ice pack wrapped around my head (Jacob Marley style) for the better part of the day, but I’m doing okay.  Thanks so much for all of your prayers, well wishes and tips.  You’re all wonderful. I just took another pain pill, so I thought I would slip in a post while I’m feeling relaxed and very happy! So, if you remember when I took a trip to Wisconsin, one of the shops I visited was Harvest Home in Pewaukee.  I was so inspired by the way Brenda, the proprietress, used plants in her home and shop.  She put plants in just about anything, the expected and unexpected.  Baskets, tea cups, gravy boats, buckets and I even spotted a

decorating the deck

As I’ve shared in previous posts, I’ve been working on the exterior of our home…the gardens and the deck, which is our outdoor living space.  Jeff and I have always talked about having a nice outdoor living space with a fireplace, a covered area, maybe even retractable screens.  Our deck is nowhere close to that dream space.  It’s a simple deck with warped and faded boards, no shade, no fireplace, no bells and no whistles. If we were planning on living in this house long-term, it might be worth doing something about it, but our hope is to move to a home with a bit more property in a few years and we don’t want to put much more money into this house. What I can do, though, is make the existing space look the best it can look.  I can add things that will make it feel more like an outdoor

evolution of my house | part 2 | the dining room

This is part two in a series that’s a more in-depth follow-up of my 2015 summer home tour.  Showing the entire house in one post made me realize what a change this home has undergone and I thought it would be encouraging to others if I share the slow process from “before” to “after”.  If you missed part one, the evolution of my living room, you can check it out HERE. Now, onto the dining room, which sits adjacent to the living room through a large arch.  Because these rooms open to one another, I’ve always painted them the same color and treated the windows the same.  Here’s how the dining room looks today… Here’s how this room started out.  You can see Jeff snapped a picture before he ripped up the carpeting.  You can also see that the room had the same shiny pine trim as the living room, dingy

evolution of my house | part 1 | the living room

First of all, thank you so much for all of the sweet comments in response to the home tour I posted earlier this week.  It was fun for me to share the entire house (except one bathroom and Jeff’s office) all in the same post.  Looking over it, I realized how much work we’ve done in the (almost) nine years we’ve lived here.  I know we’ve done a lot, but it hit me afresh. For those who haven’t been reading my blog since the early days, I thought I would share the evolution of each space.  I hope it will be fun to see my “phases”, but also encouraging to see that my rooms didn’t come together overnight.  It took me a lot of trial and error to pinpoint my style.  I also had to make do with what I had until I could “trade up” for something I liked

Summer 2015 Home Tour

Welcome to my Pennsylvania home tour!  We worked hard on our home for almost eleven years and it was a true labor of love and DIY marathon.  We’ve painted, built, repaired, installed, sewed, upholstered, sanded, refinished, ripped out and remodeled just about every corner. Our goal was to balance the function we needed for our busy family with our (mostly my) desire for a beautiful home.  I hope this home tour gives you some inspiration and encouragement to do the same in your home. Let’s start at the front door… This house was a 1 1/2 story, 2300 sq foot, brick cape cod that was built in 1948.  It’s in a two stoplight town in the hills and orchards of south central Pennsylvania.  We’ve spent most our time fixing up the inside of our house, but we’ve been working on the outside of the house over the past year or so.

plan for the deck

Our deck has always been an afterthought.  There are times when the weather was beautiful and we would sit outside, but we’ve never been “outdoor living” people.  As the boys are getting older and I’m getting more into gardening, we are spending more time outside.  And, aside from a few tweaks and finishing touches, I’m basically finished with the inside of the house, so I’ve been “noticing things” more on the outside.  I’ve really been working on the window boxes in the front and the concrete planters.  I’ve been pruning, weeding, mulching.  We’ve even built up a sunken area on one side of our house and planted hydrangeas and peonies along the side in a mulched garden bed.  The curb appeal of our home is on the rise and it’s making me want to do more. We’ve already been doing a bit of work to the deck.  Jeff has wanted

crazy plant lady

Between traveling last week and our photo shoot this week, Kriste and I weren’t able to get a Design Ramblings filmed for today.  We are getting back in the swing of things next week, though, so you’ll see us next week. A couple of months ago, I decided to buy some myrtle topiaries.  My house was suffering from a bit of “preserved boxwood overload” and some of them, after several years of being on display, were looking a little tired and fuzzy.  I was ready to make an honest effort at caring for live plants. I bought the myrtles from Terrain, which is the only place I was able to find them.  They were definitely an investment and I took that seriously.  I’ve watered, spritzed, turned, trimmed and even given them a pat of encouragement here and there and they have stayed alive and green and happy for two whole months!
