dining room curtain options

Last week, I shared inspiration and some plans for our dining room.  You can find that post HERE.  In this post, I wanted to share the fabrics and colors I considered for the curtains and which one I selected. We have already had these windows replaced, but I’ve been waiting to nail down the curtains until I figured out what I wanted to do on the walls.  This room is a game of dominoes and I have been hesitant to commit to knocking the first one down.  It’s easier to paint before hanging curtains and I obviously want the paint and curtains to make sense together, but I need to paint the ceiling before I paint the walls… You can see how this goes. Full-length curtains will add so much to this space, though, so I can’t wait to get them done.  They’ll frame out the window and visually give

dining room inspiration & plans

While the walls of our dining room are still only primed, I’ve been giving it a lot of thought lately and would like to start making some progress on it over the next few weeks.  It would be very nice to have it done before the holidays.  If it makes you feel any better about undone projects, these walls have been wearing primer for over a year and I have felt a little paralyzed about getting started on this room.  I don’t usually drag my feet so long when it comes to painting a room, but I have waffled about what I want to do with this space. With our last dining room, I sort of plowed forward, starting a hand-painted mural one morning in my pajamas.  It’s still one of my favorite rooms and was completed on gut instinct and whim.  Instead of continuing to overthink, I just need

summer obsessions with Walmart

This post is sponsored by Walmart.  As always, all words and opinions expressed in this post are honest and my own. With the pool completely finished and opened, landscaping underway, a new fence, and a furnished patio, we have thoroughly been enjoying our backyard this summer.  It truly is an oasis and we’ve loved using it ourselves as well as having friends and family over to enjoy the pool and relaxing environment.  As I’ve shared before, many of the items used in our outdoor space are from Walmart and we’ve added a few new things that have become summer essentials.  I love that Walmart carries reliable summer staples like patio umbrellas and comfy swivel chairs and trendy items like water-resistant Bluetooth speakers and tabletop “bonfire” stoves. So, in this post, I want to highlight a few of my favorite summer essentials from Walmart. The first one is my favorite new

cooking with propane

It’s been just over a year since our kitchen renovation, so I thought it was a good time to share a few updates.  To fully bring my vision for this kitchen to life, we either had to have the gas company run a line to the house or add a propane tank.  I received a lot of questions about this during the renovation, so I wanted to circle back to it and share the cost, process, why we chose propane, and how it’s been cooking with propane instead of natural gas. When we first looked at the house, I immediately noticed the stove was electric and I called the local natural gas company to see if there was a line run to the house (that perhaps wasn’t being used) or if a line could be installed.  The bad news is there wasn’t an existing gas line and more bad news

backyard pool renovation | one year later

When we were first looking at moving back to the East Coast from Minnesota, I told Jeff I would have to have a pool if we were moving somewhere with hot, muggy summers.  I didn’t mean that we had to have a backyard pool, but I at least wanted access to one through a neighborhood membership or something.  I just melt in the heat and being able to jump in a pool would help me enjoy the summers more.  When we narrowed down our search to Washington County, Maryland, I primarily picked out homes with pools.  Again, it wasn’t a must-have, but I felt like it was a huge perk, especially with two teenage boys.  We ended up looking at an as-is home built in 1970 with a backyard pool that hadn’t been used as a pool in over 15 years.  We have never owned a pool and didn’t know

When we live in a house for a while, it’s easy to become blind to things that should be obvious eyesores.  Something that bothered us initially becomes something we don’t even notice.  Such was the case with the basketball pole off our driveway.  We walk past it almost every day and, occasionally, I would recognize it and comment that we need to remove it and then we would go about working on other things. We considered putting a new backboard and net up to make it functional, but we learned that it would have to be either customized or custom-made since the mounting hardware on the pole no longer matches up with modern backboards.  We then questioned if anyone in our house would use it enough to make it worth the trouble and expense and decided it would be best to just remove it.  We mentioned that it was going

a plush, pet-friendly wool rug

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Rugs USA.  As always, all words and opinions expressed are honest and my own. Almost ten years ago, I wrote a blog post sharing my decorating nemesis – rugs.  I just always found them so difficult to get right!  There are size considerations, materials, durability, comfort, not to mention how they work with the decor style and color palette of the room.  After trying many, many rugs in several rooms, I decided I would stick primarily with neutral rugs and those made from natural materials.  Braided jute rugs are a favorite because they are inexpensive, forgiving, work well with my antique pieces and decorating style, and feel nice underfoot.  Our bedroom is a long rectangle and really needed a large rug to properly fill it.  When I couldn’t find just the right jute rug to fit the space, I tried pairing together two 6

fencing day two & DIY cost savings

We finished installing the second side of the fence yesterday and I took the time to take a few pictures to share how we did it for those who are curious or considering a similar project.  You can read about our first day of “fencing” HERE. The fence really needed to be replaced from the day we moved in.  Pickets were falling off and it was only getting worse.  In fact, the gate used most often fell off one day shortly after we moved in.  I had a neighborhood dog wander to our front door a few months ago and I put her in the backyard to keep her safe while I notified her owners and waited for them to pick her up.  Well, a fence that held Sebastian just fine was no match for this escape artist.  The owner came to get her and she was gone.  It was
