the slow evolution

I’m sure you would agree that our society as a whole suffers from “instant-itis”.  We want it all now, fast, and simple. And the expectation for a room makeover has been altered ever since Trading Spaces.  A room can be completely (debatably) finished from top to bottom in 2 days.  And, while some transformations can be quick, like changing the wall color, truly finishing a room is typically a slow evolution.  It’s a scavenger hunt; a journey of discovery. It’s taken me a long time to embrace that, because I like things to be finished!  But I have learned over the years that working on a room is something that can be (and is perhaps best when) savored like a good cup of dark hot chocolate.  You might take some big swigs right in the beginning out of eagerness, but the cup is finally drained in slow sips. My kitchen

kitchen layers & textures

Since we’ve been talking a lot about the kitchen and adjoining eating area, I thought I would share a bit more about the direction I’m heading. Right now, it’s all a little one-note, but that’s intentional.  When possible, I like to start with a foundation for a room that’s classic and will have longevity for me.  Longevity doesn’t necessarily mean neutral, but in the case of the kitchen, I kept the foundation of the room neutral. Now it’s time to start adding in more layers and colors and also refining what is already there.  I already shared the fabrics I’m brining into the space and I’m planning on using the large scale check on the French dining chairs. They really are lovely as is, but, as you can imagine, the seats are prone to stains and they aren’t going to look lovely for long!  So, I’m going to make skirts

Living Room & Kitchen Fabrics

I will say, I am very optimistic when it comes to my to-do list!  I already have a bolt of fabric hanging out in the master bedroom, ready to be made into curtains and pillows, as well as a French daybed that needs miles of custom double-welting sewn. not to mention the pillows for that. But, I still ordered fabric for curtains, pillows, and upholstery for the family room! I think, once I make up my mind about something like fabric, I want to buy the materials, so they are at the ready when I’m in the mood to sew and/or upholster, which isn’t a daily occurrence. So, here are the fabrics I decided on… I know.  Blue and white is a shocker! Here’s the deal.  I have loved blue and white for the better part of two decades, so I’m sticking with it.  I’ll stray from that color palette

the “factory table” update

Since I’ve had a few people ask, I thought I would give an update on the “factory table” I purchased off of craigslist and stripped down several weeks ago.   Well, I had plans to paint and finish it right away, but with cold weather looming, I felt it was more urgent to paint the kitchen cabinets.  I needed to be able to spray the doors outside, whereas the table can be painted inside in any sort of weather. I was also able to just throw a tablecloth over it and out of sight out of mind.  Right? It is still unfinished under there, though, so it’s on my to-do list. A small part of my procrastination, other than working on other things, is that I’m not 100% sure how I want to bring the furniture, fabrics, and everything together in this room.  It really needs some fabric and so much

kitchen shelves & the butler’s pantry

Now that the cabinets are painted, I’m hoping to finish some other parts of the kitchen over the next few weeks.  The freshly painted cabinets and walls are a great backdrop, but the kitchen needs some more texture and warmth. I am on the hunt for fabric to make curtains for the eating area, family room, and a valance for the kitchen.  I need a lot of fabric for all of that, so the trick is finding something I like that isn’t too expensive.  I’ve ordered samples and I’ll keep you posted on that. I also need to paint the open shelving and finish styling it.  Ideally, I would’ve painted the walls and the shelves prior to hanging them, but sometimes the cart goes before the horse when DIYing.  I have to take all of the shelves down to paint them, so I’ve been dragging my feet! The laundry room

Painted Kitchen Cabinets | Reveal

Over the past few weeks, I have been working on painting my kitchen cabinets.  I must admit that it dragged out the process, but working on the cabinets in stages helped keep some order in the busiest room in our house. And now, they are done.  Whew! As a reminder, here is what the kitchen looked like shortly after we moved in… And here is how it looks now… I know you’re going to ask and, if you missed them, I wrote a series all about painting the kitchen cabinets… painting cabinets | prep painting cabinets | priming painting cabinets | applying the paint The cabinets are painted in Advanced Paint in a Satin Finish by Benjamin Moore in a custom-mixed white.  Here is the formula… The island is painted in the same kind of paint, but in the color Stonington Grey. The walls are painted in Pearly White by

counter & tile options & $30 shelves

Yesterday, I needed to run some errands and play some catch up, so I didn’t have a chance to start painting the kitchen island.  I must admit that it’s nice to have a break from cabinet painting, although I’m looking forward to having it done! While I was out, though, I picked up samples from Home Depot to “try them on” in my kitchen.  I can picture design elements in my head pretty well, but it’s nice to be able to see something in place and get a feel for how it relates to the colors and textures already happening in a space. I picked up a Grecian marble floor tile and beveled subway tile mosaic backsplash… When Jeff saw it, he commented how much be loved the beveled subway tile, but he raised his eyebrow at the floor tile.  “We’re not going to use floor tiles for our counters,

the beefy dual fuel range

Disclosure: This post is not sponsored by Kitchen Aid, but I did receive VIP pricing on the purchase of this dual-fuel range.  I decided to purchase this specific range before I knew I could receive a discount.   I paid retail price for my other Kitchen Aid appliances.  All words and opinions about the brand and the range are, as always, honest and my own. I have wanted a beefy dual fuel range for about 15 years.  The timing was just never right.  So, it remained on my wish list for a future home when the timing was right. When we bought this home and it had an old electric range, Jeff agreed that we could have a gas line installed and purchase a dual fuel range.  We hope to live in this home for many years, so we felt like it was worth making a few key investments upfront, so
