1970 home renovation

We purchased a 1970 brick ranch house in Washington County, Maryland in September of 2022. This wasn’t the home I envisioned us purchasing, but we thought it was a little gem that needed the kind of updating we were eager to do. We have had the privilege of meeting some of the children of the original homeowners, who built this Better Homes & Garden floor plan as their dream home. Follow along as we make updates to the home, big and small, while retaining the original charm and best features of the home.

thrifted teak patio lounge chairs

When I shared the ironstone breadbox last week, I teased that I found something even better during my next outing to some thrift and antique stores.  What I found wasn’t as rare, but it’s something I’ve been hunting for and I scored big time. My mom and I have been enjoying going out together to check out some local antique, thrift, and second-hand stores lately and we’ve had such a good time!  We have both found some treasures and we simply enjoy spending time together now that we’re 40 minutes apart instead of 20 hours!  On this particular day, we hit an antique store (Memory Lane Antiques in Hagerstown) and then went to the Salvation Army, which is practically next door.  I hadn’t been to this thrift store, but I had heard good things about it and the parking lot is always full and hopping!  A swarm of locals is

1970 kitchen renovation | forte panel-ready fridge review

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Forte.  As always, all words and opinions expressed are honest and my own. Through the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing reviews about each of the appliances I selected for our kitchen in case you’re in the market for a new range, fridge, dishwasher, or range hood insert and my review might be helpful.  As I stated above, this post is sponsored by Forte, the maker of the fridge I am reviewing today, but I didn’t receive any talking points or boundaries about what I can write about their products.  They gave me free rein to write honest reviews, so that’s what you’re going to get.  I will share the pros and cons of each appliance so you can make an informed decision. Let’s first talk about why I selected a e.  When I first started planning out our kitchen renovation, I assumed we

1970 kitchen renovation | the eating area

Alright, my friends who have been waiting to see more of the kitchen renovation, we’re going to take a little tour of the kitchen eating area as well as a look at how the space has changed over the past few weeks.  Even as I was pulling up the before pictures, I had a hard time believing what the kitchen looked like before our renovation started.  We’ll definitely have to do a full before & after comparison post, but I thought I would share a few today. As a frame of reference here is a before and after of the floor plan.  I think some of the before pictures aren’t going to make sense since we removed some walls and have views we didn’t have before. This is the before view looking into the eating area standing just to the left of the sink… And this is the same view

1970 kitchen renovation | the antique baker’s table island

You’ve been seeing little peeks of it, but let me show you the refinished antique baker’s table and how it looks in the kitchen. As a reminder, I found this antique baker’s table at the Lucketts Spring Market a few weeks ago.  I had purchased a pine counter from a blog reader for $200 (you can see that HERE), but I wasn’t convinced it was the island.  It was worth picking up, though, so I had something to use until I found just the right one and I wouldn’t feel pressured.  Plus, it will make a fantastic folding counter for the laundry room or in the garage as a workbench.  It was a no-lose purchase. But, when I was at Lucketts, finding the kitchen island was still on my list.  As I shared in my post about shopping at the Lucketts Spring Market, I initially looked at antique shop counters,

1970 kitchen renovation | the pot rail

A few people have asked about my love-it-or-hate-it pot rack.  Let me answer that question right now.  Yes, the pot rack is making an appearance.  I’ve had a pot rack or pot rail in my kitchen for almost 20 years and I just can’t go cold turkey.  After a few months without one, I missed it almost daily.  Yes, I like how it looks and it’s a great way to display my pretty pots, pans, colanders, and molds, but it’s where we store our everyday pots and pans.  Keeping them stacked in a cabinet or drawer just isn’t the same.  I wasn’t 100% sure I wanted to hang the pot rack in my new kitchen, though.  But, once things were more settled, I knew it needed to be a part of this kitchen.  So, Jeff helped me hang it over the weekend. And then, on Monday, we hung the pot

1970 kitchen renovation | inexpensive open shelving

Last week I shared that I was sanding, priming, and painting some shelves to install in the kitchen.  Open shelving wasn’t in my original plan for the kitchen, but once I started unboxing all of my kitchen stuff and moving in, I realized I wanted more storage/display space as well as a place to put my stand mixer.  I thought it would go on the shelf under the antique baker’s table, but it was just a tiny bit too tall.  So, I thought back to my Minnesota kitchen and how much I enjoyed the open shelves we put in an awkward niche.  You can see those HERE.  I knew I had just the spot for something similar in this kitchen. I looked into fancy wood and brass brackets, but we’re getting to the end of our kitchen renovation budget and expensive brackets weren’t going to work.  I also wasn’t sure

1970 kitchen renovation | custom-built range hood

As I’ve shared throughout the 1970 kitchen renovation series, we hired out the large projects and decided to do the painting and finishing work ourselves in order to make everything fit into our budget.  Jeff and I built a custom range hood for our PA kitchen (you can find the plans and tutorial HERE), so we decided to do that piece.  When we started to plan out installing the range hood and building the wood surround, we ended up collaborating on the project with our contractor.  He built the frame and installed the hood and we built the cabinet.  It just made sense since he was doing the ductwork and installing the other appliances.  He’s also going to have a stainless steel frame made to trim out the bottom of the hood so wood isn’t exposed on the underside.  I will show all of that and give a full review

1970 kitchen renovation | this & that

It seems like the kitchen should be done already, but all of the little finishing details take time and that’s what’s been happening in the kitchen for the past few days.  It’s a little bit of this and that.  Installing trim, caulking, painting, patching, finishing, and starting to get things more organized.  So, I thought I would share some of the this and that, because it’s all a part of the kitchen renovation. Last week, the trim went in around the dining room and basement door frames and it’s amazing how much that added!  It’s just simple trim, but it did the trick at making these mismatched doors make more sense together.  (The dining room doors are open in the photo below.)  We worked on filling, caulking, and painting them yesterday. The “appliance garages” are actually regular cabinets with hinges that will hold the door up when opened.  We looked
