Sneak Peek – So You Think You Can Decorate

Greetings from the Sunshine State!  Of course, it’s about to rain outside, but after living in Florida for 6 years as a teenager, I know that it’s half the sunshine state and half the lightning capital.  The competition continues tonight, so I thought I would give you a sneak peak.  First of all, thanks so much to everyone who has voted for me and my projects.  It is really an honor and a blast being a part of this. The winner last week was my best blog friend, Donna!  I told her she would win and I was right.  Congrats, girl! Here’s a tiny look at my “white” entry.  Make sure you check out all of the entries tonight at 9:00 pm EST and vote for your favorites! I told you it was just a sneak peak!  You’ll have to come back tonight for all of the pictures and a tutorial that’s a great

Give it to the crazy lady next door…

In case you missed it, make sure you check out my “old” entry for the SYTYCD competition and, if you have not voted for your favorites, do it before Friday. The crazy lady referenced in the title is me, but I’ll get to that in a minute.  First, I wanted to show you the new arrangement above my dresser.  I’ve been working on my master bedroom for quite a while and I’m still chipping away at it.  This is the arrangement I decided on for the time being.  I’m sure it’s going to change again, but I like it for now.  I’ve got to find something better than pinecones to fill those hurricanes…still looking. I ran into my neighbors at a thrift store and they asked if I wanted a rusty bed.  How could I refuse that?  It occurred to me later that some kind of conversation must’ve taken place

So You Think You Can Decorate – Week 3

Thank you so much to everyone who voted for me last week.  This competition has been so tough, mainly because I am competing against some good blog friends.  One of them, Amy, was “sent home” last week.  Her work is so beautiful, so that was hard to see.  Make sure you give her lots of *hugs* this week.  The theme for week three of So You Think You Can Decorate is “old.”  This was the toughest one for me so far.  I own so many cool, old things; I just wasn’t sure which direction I should go.  Should I repurpose something, should I showcase something…?  I recently rearranged my curio using family heirlooms and found items and these pictures kept speaking to me, so I went with my gut.  Here’s my submission…  I am blessed to have inherited a lot of beautiful things from my family.  Furniture, pictures, personal items,

Gorgeous Glass Canisters – Tutorial

I’m linking this up to Flea Market Trixie’s  modeling paste challenge.  If you have not read it, yet, make sure you check out my Workshop Series guest post by Maria from Dreamy Whites. She shares all of her secrets about making whites beautiful and liveable. I’ve been seeing chalkboard paint used to label glass canisters all over the blog world. It’s a great idea, but I felt like it looked like a square of chalkboard paint that was painted on a glass canister. I wanted something more… I got this classic stencil and textured product from DecoArt and thought it would be a perfect way to frame the chalkboard paint.  Here’s what you’ll need and how to do it. Supplies Chalkboard Paint Frog Tape DecoArt Thick Texture DecoArt Tin Ceiling Texture Stencil Sponge brush Small pallet knife (A bottle of white paint is pictured, but I ended up not needing

So You Think You Can Decorate – Week 2

Thanks so much to everyone who voted for my antique sign accessory last week.  My entry came in second!  Make sure you vote for your favorites this week as well.  The theme is Catalog Hacks and here is my entry… Confession time.  I’m not much of a catalog or mall shopper.  I only own a few things from Pottery Barn – their decorating books and some sconces my mom gave me.   I’ve never even seen a Ballard Design catalog and the only thing in my house from Restoration Hardware is a pair of candlesticks I bought at a yard sale for $2.00.  Despite those facts, I knew immediately what I was going to do. On a rare mall visit in November, I had the chance to roam around in Restoration Hardware for a while and fell in love with their linen pillows.  The smallest one was $35, which is not that bad, but I usually

Boxwood Topiary Tutorial

If you’ve read my blog for a while, you may have picked up on the fact that I like topiaries.  A ball of greenery on a stick…what’s not to like?  I used a sad, dusty, moss topiary that I purchased at a yard sale for $3.00 as the form for the boxwood branches.  If you don’t have one of these, you can make your own using a styrofoam ball, a stick, and some moss.  I purchased two bunches of boxwood branches on sale at Hobby Lobby for $4.00/each and pulled a milk glass urn out of the depths of my basement.  The tools needed are wire cutters and a glue gun. Clip small sections off of the boxwood branches, leaving a wire “stem” on each piece to hold it into the foam.  My hand was red and swollen by the time I finished clipping two bunches, so I will wear gloves

Joining the Conversation

Well, I finally took the plunge and opened a twitter account.  I look pretty lonely at this point, though, with followers that total a big fat goose egg.  Can you girls help me out?  I’d like to find and follow all of my readers, followers, and friends.  See you there! You girls are awesome.  16 Followers and counting.

The Eighth Deady Sin?

The 1000 follower giveaway for a custom hand painted “antique” grain sack ends tomorrow.  Click here if you still need to enter!  And don’t forget to vote for your two favorites on SYTYCD.  I got a great response from my sheet music table and I have a huge stash of antique sheet music, so why not cover a shade with it? I purchased this figurine lamp from a thrift store a few weeks ago.  It’s been sitting in my basement until inspiration struck.  I then found this small, white shade at Target on clearance for $2.48!  It was the perfect scale and shape for the little lamp and a sheet music treatment would work with the horn-playing cherub figurine. I brushed Mod Podge directly onto the fabric shade and applied the sheet music, cropping off the extra with a sharp knife.  I finished the shade with two more coats of Mod Podge
