Aria Ivory

Ah! Today is Friday and I totally forgot about posting FFF yesterday!  I am visiting my parents in Florida and we went to Sea World yesterday, so it simply slipped my mind.  Sorry to anyone who “showed up” and found their hostess wasn’t there.  We’ll pick it up again next week.  I found out last week that I had been inspired by one of my bloggy friends and I hadn’t even realized it.  Let’s rewind to a few months ago when a friend of my mother-in-law passed some magazines along to me.  She knew I was into “decorating stuff” and she thought I would enjoy them.  One of the magazines was Women’s Day Budget Decorating. .  I fell in love this beautiful home that was featured inside.  It was light, bright, had a Frenchy, antique style, and many of the colors used in the home are used in my home.  I had

Let There Be Light

I had a major lighting issue in my living room.  The issue?  There was none.  Now, I don’t know why my 1940’s builder thought the residents of this home would not need overhead lighting in their main living space, but he didn’t.  So, we needed to change that.  My dream would’ve been to install several pot lights in key places, but between the plaster walls, 62 year old wiring, and no access, this dream was a no go.  I found a matching pair of chandeliers on clearance at Lowes that were a perfect solution.  I still have the hardwiring issue…so, what’s a DIY girl like me to do?  I purchased two chandelier conversion kits, like this one from Lowes.  It’s a kit that will turn a fixture that’s meant to be hardwired into the ceiling to one that can be plugged into an outlet.  I did not take pictures to walk you through this step-by-step, mainly because I

Oil & Vinegar | homemade cleaner for wood furniture

A few weeks ago, I found a wonderful tip about using oil and vinegar to revive and clean old wood.  This is one of those tips that sound really cool, but I was pretty skeptical.  It may be the kind of thing that makes a piece look good long enough to snap a picture and then, when it dries, it looks like crap again.  Well, this oil and vinegar solution to clean wood furniture is the real deal…and I used it on just about every piece of wood within walking distance to test it out. Check out the before and after on these croquet mallets.  I purchased them at an auction and used ONLY oil and vinegar on them to clean them up and bring out the patina of the wood.  Obviously, the one on the left is the before, right is the after. I purchased this gorgeous dresser at

Starting A Business – In the (Very) Beginning

“What about http://www.mms2.wpengine.com/?  That’s available.  You could be Miss Mustard Seed.”  When my brother said these words to me almost two years ago, I was not very thrilled at the idea of being Miss Mustard Seed.  I pictured “her” as being a short, squat cartoon gardener wearing a straw hat and holding a sunflower.  I’m not sure why, but that’s what I imagined and that is not me.  Now I am Miss Mustard Seed, so how did that work out?  This brings me to my first post about starting your business.  Have a dream. Before you look into any of the nitty gritty details, you need to dream.  What do you want your business to look like at the end of a year?  How do you want you and your business to be perceived?  How much do you want to grow?  Then, dream really big.  Imagine a magazine feature, being interviewed by Oprah, a

Meet Bonnie from Creating a House of Grace

I wanted to take a post to introduce you to a wonderful new blog friend of mine, Bonnie from Creating a House of Grace.  One thing I love about the blog world is meeting other women who have similar interests.  Bonnie and I both love yard sales, a good bargain, and caring for our homes.  We also both run our own businesses with little ones hugging our knees.  Here’s a little more about her… What is your favorite household chore?  Least favorite? Ha, you would think that this question would be easy for me.  The truth is that I am always switching up my favorite “chore”.  Lately it has been vacuuming.  I think that it is my favorite because I need to do it the most.  With three young children, including a one year old that tries to eat anything he sees,  I NEED to vacuum everyday.  I also love

Starting A Business – My Story

When I put up my “Ask Miss Mustard Seed” post a few weeks ago, I received tons of questions about starting and running your own business.  The time has come for me to answer those questions, share my own experience, give some practical advice, and highlight some resources.  Welcome to my new Workshop Series, Starting and Running Your Own Business, brought to you by Mustard Seed Creations and Funky Junk Interiors. I will post this series as I can, so there is not a set schedule.  Just keep checking your readers and e-mails, so you don’t miss a post!  First of all, I thought it would be appropriate for me to share my own experience in starting my business. If someone had told me that I would be a business owner a few years ago, I would’ve laughed. I am not a business minded person.  I have always dreamed of selling antiques,

First Hydrangea and Freebies

I know I am not alone in my affection for hydrangeas.  I just love the puffy, cloud-like flowers that adorn these bushes.  I planted three in my backyard two years ago and, despite my deficiency as a gardener, they have been growing.  Over the past few days, I have been watching the buds form and today, I finally had my first bloom…which I immediately snipped off and brought it into the house.  I can’t wait until these bushes are loaded down with enough flowers to fill all of the pitchers and vases in my house for several weeks.  Second, I had a few compliments on the ginger jars I shared in my “antler post” and some requests for a clearer picture.  I aim to please. These huge jars were brought to me by my aunt a few weeks ago.  Aren’t they gorgeous?  I love all things blue and white, so when she asked
