Miss Mustard Seed and Funky Junk Interiors Present: The “Copy Me” Challenge

If you frequent my blog, I’m sure you are starting to pinpoint my style.  You may see something in a shop or in a magazine and think to yourself, “Miss Mustard Seed would love that!”  You can see a picture of a room and instantly know it’s mine.  Now, if you read Funky Junk Interiors, you might see a rusted piece of junk and immediately think of Donna, AKA Miss Funky Junk herself.  …and you know when you see a “Donna” room.  It is like no other.  I mean, have you ever seen a dining room like this, before? Do you think you know our styles?  Well, let’s put it to the test.  You’re officially invited to two link parties! ~ When? ~ Watch both Miss Mustard Seed’s and Funky Junk’s follower widgets. Once Donna’s followers pass the 4000 mark (which will happen any day now), her link party will begin.

The Angel & the Devil

You know those two voices on your shoulder? Yeah…they’re whispering to me. About my corner cabinets in my dining room. Sorry for the picture.  My old 28-80mm lens finally totally crapped out and won’t focus on anything at all, so I’m having to share an old picture where the cabinets are cut off.  My new lenses are arriving tomorrow.  Hallelujah!! Back to the cabinets.  One voice tells me, “They’re beautiful wood.  There’s not a scratch on them.  You would regret painting them.  There are people who might even pass out if you painted pieces that were that nice.”  The other tells me, “You love painted furniture.  A soft chippy white and gray finish with blue interiors would look amazing.  It would make these pieces custom and extraordinary.  Just look at the piece in this dining room…” Country Living – Lauren Ross The reply, “Yeah, but you may regret it and

Just the After

Picture with me, if you will, the buffet below…all natural wood, a little tired, a little worn, and a little dirty.    I did have a before picture that I took with my iPhone when I found it in an antique shop, but my son deleted it while playing with said iPhone in church yesterday.  Bummer.  Before and afters aren’t quite as exciting without the before shot.  You’ll have to use your imagination.  I cleaned it, sanded it and painted the bottom with one coat of bonding primer and two coats of SW Creamy in semi-gloss.  I sanded the edges and applied a dark wax to antique and protect it.  The top was cleaned and waxed to give it a new luster.  This piece has a great applique detail between the doors, that lock with the original key.  It’s a really cool piece.  Man, it feels like such a let down to write

Paint Decks & Quiche Recipe

I love paint decks. (You have to be a contractor/designer to be able to get them for free, but you can sometimes purchase them.)  Some people get overwhelmed.  You know the type (it may be you)…standing, blank stare in front of the florescent lights and the display of thousands of colors.  “How can I tell what will look good in my home?  It’s just a teeny tiny little square of color.”  They bite their lip.  Call their husband out of “tool heaven” aisle. Ask total strangers, “does this look like a soft, airy blue to you or is there too much of a purple undertone?”  I look at a paint deck…thousands of little squares of color…and I get excited.  There are so many possibilities.  So many colors to try!  I am fortunate enough to have lots of uses for paint, so if I see a color I like, I just buy a $5

My House – Before & Afters of 2010

While everyone else is organizing and freshening their homes for the remainder of the winter, I’m still in the thick of decorating for Christmas.  I have to work a year ahead in my freelance writing and I have to do it while the fresh tree is still alive and the Christmas stuff is out.  I’m making a final push to finish all of my projects, so the tree can come down and I can move on! Since the only stuff I have to share is soooo last month, I thought I would share the big changes I made in my home this year, all gathered together in one post.  I’m surprised at how much my home has changed in a year.  All of the before pictures were taken around January of last year.  Here we go! The dining room before… …and now. The living room before… …and now. The guest room

A New Space

No, I’m not taking on a fourth retail space.  I’m not that crazy!  I did get to move into a new space yesterday, though.  There was a little bit of a shuffle at Wild Rose and I was put in the corner.  No, I wasn’t naughty.  No dunce cap was involved.  It was a good thing.  I got two full walls to put my furniture on.  I was really excited about the switch and it was fun for me to pull all of my things into my own little corner.  Once I did that, I realized I need some more things to hang on the wall and I need a small table or carpet for the middle.  It looks a little sparse, but now I know what I need.  (By the way, I used my new toy to take this picture.  I sucked it up and bought a wide angle lens.  I’ll

This Year & Next

This year has been a dream-come-true year for me.  I learned a lot about myself.  I found a passion, discovered I was really good at it and realized that my dreams were not as far out of reach as I thought.  In January, I was plugging along..writing a blog, working on my house, painting furniture and selling in a small shop.  I really thought that was how things would stay.  It all changed in August.  I found out the shop that sold my furniture and accessories was closing, which should have been scary, but I had a peace about it.  I was even excited.  When God closes a door, there must be something good around the corner.  I then received one of the most amazing e-mails in my life.  HGTV.com was asking me (a non-designer, non-writer, stay-at-home-mom-of-toddlers) to write tutorials for them.  When I received the contract in the mail, hiring me as a freelance writer, I wanted to show it

The Living Room – Before, During & Now

If you’ve been following along over the past couple of weeks, you’ve seen what my living room looks like currently.  Let’s now take a look at the progression, shall we? Oh my.  This was a photo taken when we first looked at the house.  This room was a mess.  The carpet covering the hard wood floors was stained and stinky.  The walls hadn’t been painted in years…maybe since the house was built in the 1940’s.  The dark pine trim and dusty curtains only added to the gloominess.  We ripped out the carpet, refinished the floors, painted the walls a peacock blue, painted the trim white and threw a bunch of furniture in there.  The desk, curio and piano are still in the room, but I have sold the rest of the pieces.  I made valances out of clearance fabric, which totaled $10 for the whole room, but I knew I eventually
