Furniture Makeovers

Before and Afters

silvertone finds a home & French chairs get a fresh start

I’ve been working on restoring an antique Silvertone phonograph for a few months.  I got into painting furniture, because stripping, refinishing and restoring is so tedious and takes forever.  Just give me a brush and a couple of hours and let it be done!  But, sometimes it’s worth it and I’ve found a labor of love is good for my patience every now and then. I have wanted a photograph for several years and finally got one in a furniture lot I purchased shortly before the Lucketts Spring Market this year.  It had good bones and still worked (yay!), but it had been neglected and showed some pretty nasty water damage. I cleaned, stripped, sanded, stained and refinished the piece and, I must say, I am super proud of myself and how it turned out.  We do still need to replace the veneer on the bottom of the sides and

Good evening all.  Again, there were some great makeover this week!  I think the furniture makeovers are in full swing this time of year, so there are a lot of great things to choose from.  Here are my favorites from last week’s shindig. I think this butler’s pantry by Emily of Eleven Gables is such an amazing, luxurious space.  I love the idea of making a utilitarian space pretty and functional.  You have to check out the post to see all of the details that make this space super organized.  The chandelier puts it over the top. Rita from The Treeces got this amazing (and huge) dining table from an auction house for $5.00.  Yes, that’s right.  That is a pretty stinkin’ awesome furniture find and it looks great with those metal chairs and the Market sign. This buffet by Rita of Ferpie & Fray is so bold, yet classic.  I

I found some really great features for you tonight.  There were a lot of great ones, but these three were no-brainers for me to feature.  Enjoy the party! This pair of “map cabinets” actually started life as modern laminate side tables.  I had to do a double-take, because it was hard to believe how they started and where they ended up.  I love Kristine’s work on the Painted Hive and her style and she really nailed these. I’ve seen versions of these before, but I love this one made by Liz Marie.  I think this is such a clever piece to use as a side table or in a tight spot where floor space is at a premium.  It’s also a nice way to add lighting without getting into hardwiring. I’m going to be totally honest with this one and say that mid-century modern furniture is not my thing.  BUT…this

the fate of the guest bed

I knew this day would come, but I didn’t think it would be so soon. We’ve always had a full-sized bed in our guest room and it’s always worked just fine, but we’ve had it in the back of our minds for a while that we wanted to upgrade it to a queen.  I’ll share more on it in a few weeks, but we now have the opportunity to upgrade to a queen, so we’re doing it.  I’m so happy for our guests, especially Jeff’s parents, but my excitement is tempered by the fact that my hand painted bed frame, that I’ve only enjoyed for a couple of months, isn’t going to work anymore. Sniff.  I know. So, I will be selling the bed frame along with with the mattress and box spring. You can read the details on how I painted the bed HERE. I’m selling the frame, side rails, slats, box

what I'm working on…

As I shared yesterday, after a week of dealing with a lot of details of doing business, I was really ready to do something creative.  So, I headed to the basement to work on some pieces that were waiting for me. The first piece is a great old kitchen cabinet that belongs to Kriste, my online shop manager.  She’s going to start working with me on some creative things as well, which is exciting for both of us.  Anyway, her sweet husband scored this for her at a yard sale for $10.  What a guy, right? They are going to use it as a TV stand in their new place, but the blue and the decals aren’t working for Kriste.  She likes white, so we’re going white with it.  I removed the hardware, sanded the piece and then painted it in a base coat of MMS Milk Paint Trophy.  I wasn’t concerned

I had a lot of conference calls, administrative duties, e-mailing, etc. to take care of this week, which is necessary, but it sometimes bogs me down.  So, today I took some time to work in my basement on furniture.  I’ll show the pieces I was working on in a few days, but I spent the bulk of my time on the phonograph I picked up in a furniture lot I bought for Lucketts.  The phonograph was sort of an add on, but it was the piece I wanted most. I’ve wanted one for years, but couldn’t take the $400 price tag on something that was just for my amusement.  This one had a lot of water damage.  The wood was dry and the finish was flaking, but it was still in working condition and I knew I could give the TLC it needed.  The bottom 12-18″ of the veneer on all sides

glass glitter milk bottles

Before I get into the project, I want to share that Miss Mustard Seed’s Glass Glitter (used in this project) is the Decor Steals daily “steal” today!  They are offering Tiara Silver, Fallen Snow and 14 Karat.  I’ve partnered with them for a long time, so it’s fun to see them carrying a product with my brand on it.  As always, it’s offered at a discounted rate due to their savvy shopping skills, so this is a good time to buy… I’ve been browsing Pinterest a lot over the past few weeks and have been pleasantly surprised to find a lot of glitter projects and products out there.  Hmmm…is glitter trending right now?  Some of the glitter went a bit too far for me, but it was fun to see all of the ideas.  I love glitter, but I prefer it in small doses…as an accent that adds a little sparkle.

I’m so sorry, again, for not picking favorites last week.  I got sidetracked, and just didn’t get it done.  I’m sure you all know what that’s like!  Anyway, I had a wonderful time looking through the furniture that was shared last week.  There was some really good stuff…too many to feature all of my favorites, really.  Here are the three I settled on highlighting… I am so in love with how simple and pretty this chair by Zoey’s Uber Chic Loft is.  The caning, the curvy French style, the blue & white ticking and free form cushion…wow.  I also am digging that chippy siding “backdrop.” Melanie of Lost & Found created some really beautiful finishes with the Vaseline resist technique.  I’m telling you…that technique is so easy and it always surprises me with how awesome it looks. I have a soft spot for Empire dressers.  They are old, sturdy, chunky and
