One of the amazing things about having a line of paint is seeing what people do with it. Sometimes people send me pictures of their work and it just knocks my socks off. When I received pictures of this kitchen by Atelier Du Vieux Pin (I can’t tell you how much I would butcher their name if I had to say it and not write it…) done in Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint…well, let’s just say that I was barefooted after looking through the pictures. Pretty amazing, right? I was blown away. Not only is the space, custom cabinetry and flooring amazing, but the milk paint finish is perfection. The Atelier Du Vieux Pin makes and designs French Canadian antique furniture reproductions and kitchen cabinets and they are true masters. Anyway, I thought it was amazing and worth sharing. Abbe’s Story

The blog world is amazing. If someone told me all of the possibilities when I pressed the “start a blog” button on Blogger almost four years ago, I’m not sure I would’ve believed them. This blog has given me overwhelming opportunities and has made some of my pie-in-the-sky dreams a reality. All of that stuff is pretty cool, but what has touched me and changed me more than anything are the kindred spirits I have met along the way. Talented, gifted, creative and inspiring women who I have gotten to know. Abbe of All Dolled Up is one of those women. Our paths crossed when she applied to be a MMSMP retailer, but I started to really take notice of her when I saw her pieces posted on our private retailer Facebook page. You might think that I’m super organized when it comes to my blog. That I have some fancy calendar where I schedule my posts months in advance. That would be a totally rational assumption, since it is my business, after all. That assumption would be wrong, though. I just blog on the fly. I’ve tried the calendar thing, but I always abandon it. I like to write about what I’m excited about, what’s inspiring to me. Well, thankfully, something super inspiring fell into my lap today. My day was spent on hanging and mudding drywall, pulling off trim, cleaning, e-mail and paperwork, etc. Stuff that is not exciting and not inspiring. Milk Paint on Raw Wood

I know I’ve shown a lot of the chippy goodness that can be created with Milk Paint. That’s just a look I love. Paint that held on to a piece of furniture that has been well-used and well-loved for generations. I love the character and uniqueness it gives to a piece. Chippy pieces are striking to my decorating eye. While all of that is true and that chippy, time-worn, authentically-aged look can be achieved with MMS Milk Paint, it’s not the best thing milk paint can do. Milk Paint is at its very best over raw wood. I’ve used a lot of different paints throughout my DIY career and I don’t know of another paint that is better over unfinished wood than milk paint. Painted Bar Stool Tutorial – Part 2

Welcome to part two of the painted bar stool tutorial. In case you missed it, or just for future reference, you can find part one HERE. In part two, I’m going to share how the do the distressing and finishing to achieve the final look… We’ll also chat about the kind of sand paper I use for distressing. So, I painted the bar stool in two coats of MMS Milk Paint in French Enamel (with the bonding agent added) and let it dry overnight. I didn’t have to let it dry that long, but that’s just how it worked out. You can start distressing once the paint is dry to the touch. I prefer to distress most pieces by hand. Sometimes I’ll hit a piece hard with the orbital sander, but it’s harder to control, especially on a piece with lots of corners and edges. The orbital sander is really best for

Painted Bar Stool Tutorial – Part 1

I’m painting my kitchen bar stools one at a time, so my kids don’t freak out. They sit at them quite often during the day for meals, snacks, drinks, treats, coloring, playing with the iPad, etc. So, I’m working on number two and thought I would take some pictures along the way for a tutorial. The color I’m using is French Enamel in MMS Milk Paint. I started out by lightly sanding the stool with 100 grit sand paper. I wanted to take a bit of the shine off the finish and remove some of the dried oatmeal, yogurt and various other splats that have added a nice “texture” and “patina” to the chairs. Sanding to prep a piece to paint doesn’t have to be a big intricate ordeal. It’s just roughing up the surface to give it “tooth” for the paint to grip. It only took about 4-5

Antiquing Wax Tutorial

When I last showed the barrel-back French cane chair, it looked like this… In the picture, it has one coat of French Enamel Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint. I then applied a second coat, followed by a light wash of a mix of Shutter Gray, Eulalie’s Sky and Grain Sack. (Eulalie’s Sky is one of our new colors and will be available for purchase in a few weeks!) There were beautifully carved details on this chair, so I wanted to bring those out with some white acrylic paint. I use acrylic paint for decorative painting, because I like the body of it and the way it flows off the brush. I’ve used it for my decorative painting for years and it was my medium-of-choice when I first started out as a decorative painter and muralist. Milk Painted Bar Stool

After a few years of leaving them as I bought them (I know, what is wrong with me?), I finally started painting my Target bar stools. I actually just painted one to experiment, before I did the other two. I love how it pops against the white cabinets and wood counters now. Before, the stools were blending into the counter and floors and felt a little “eh.” This stool was painted in two coats of MMSMP in French Enamel and then heavily distressed with 100 grit sand paper followed by 180 grit to soften the scratches a bit. I quieted the paint color and finished the chair with MMS Antiquing Wax, So even though there’s lost of visual texture, the finish is butter smooth. I know my boys are going to help me with distressing these, so why not take it to the extreme? I think it also gives these off-the-shelf
