Hand Painted Furniture

Before and Afters

mini dresser makeover & “hand painted” stencils

I am always drawn to child/doll furniture or salesmen’s samples (small, portable versions of full-sized pieces of furniture).  There is just something so sweet about them.  But, after buying a few of them and noticing how long it took to sell them, I stopped buying them.  I can get a better bang for my buck if I spend it elsewhere, so I look at them and “aww” and open the drawers and then walk away. Most of the time. I made an exception with this one.  It was well priced and I liked the simple shape. Here is how it looked when I picked it up… It was fine, but just looked a little drab. We painted it in Farmhouse White, leaving the knobs wood.  That was Kriste’s suggestion and I loved it. I added a stencil to the front in MMS Milk Paint Linen.  I like the soft tone-on-tone

painted mora clock & farmhouse white in australia

When I decide to paint something, it doesn’t take me long to add the powder to the water and dip in a brush. Remember the Mora clock from Antique Farmhouse I posted about over the weekend? It looked beautiful as is, but how could I resist painting it in MMS Milk Paint Mora?  A Mora clock painted in Mora. I painted the trim in Linen and finished the entire piece with a little bit of Antiquing, White and Furniture Wax. It has a soft, muted finish that I really love and suits the Swedish style of the clock. I used all three of the waxes to bring out different aspects of the finish…highlight the texture, simulate age and grunge that may have built up in crevices and on ledges.  The key was keeping it subtle, so the result wasn’t smudgy. If you apply tinted waxes properly, you really shouldn’t be

trading horses again

Remember my rocking horse?  The one I bought from Restoration Hardware and then painted with MMS Milk Paint to make it look chippy and old?   Well, in typical Marian fashion, I sold it. I wasn’t planning to, but a client asked if I could custom paint the same horse for her.  I agreed to the job and we tried to schedule a time for her to drop her horse off at the studio.  As we tried to schedule and reschedule, it occurred to me that it would save her a trip if I just gave her my painted horse, since she wanted hers to look exactly the same, and I could take the unpainted one and paint it again. Are you tracking with me? So, when I was in Virginia for the Holiday Expo, we met and traded horses. An interesting thing…  I really don’t mind buying and selling pieces, but

farmhouse white table

It was one of those days when I went to the studio, put my music on, and painted.  I love days like that.  I worked on a couple of pieces for the next MMS Milk Paint look book, but I was also playing around with a new milk paint color we’ll be adding to the line, soon (early 2016)…Farmhouse White.  It’ll get a proper “say hello to…” post closer to the release day, but I just couldn’t wait that long to share. I tripped upon this color as I was getting ready for the market and wanted a white that covered better than Ironstone.  I loved it so much that I immediately sent an e-mail to my manufacturer, telling them we needed to add this new white to the line. I had some mixed for some metal bins I’m painting, so I decided to brush it onto a table that’s been on

Megan’s office makeover | Craig’s List Wardrobe Reveal

After lots and lots of painting, the Craig’s List wardrobe we found for Megan’s office makeover is finished! And, here she is.  The beast herself… Megan came to the studio yesterday to help us with the final coat of green on the outside (a custom mix of MMS Milk Paint in Boxwood, Lucketts Green and Mustard Seed Yellow) and the interior in Linen. Kriste and Megan also worked on cutting and hemming the curtains.  We’re just going to hang them on clips, so they just needed a double hem on three sides.  We’re going to hem the bottom in the room, once the curtains are hanging, so they hit the floor at the perfect height. This morning, my dad came over and installed some shelves in it, so it can be functional for storage. He screwed 1 x 2 supports along the back and some scrap pieces of wood on

Pottery Barn Inspired Rustic Paint Finish

I’m often asked by readers and customers how to recreate a specific look they like on an inspiration piece.  So, when Jeff and I built a trunk-style coffee table for HGTV.com, one inspired by a Pottery Barn trunk, I decided to try to replicate the finish as well. I came up with a look that’s pretty darn close, so I thought I would share how I achieved it… Here’s the inspiration coffee table from Pottery Barn… …and the one we made… …and a closer look at the finish… Can you believe that’s new wood? I was able to make the wood look older by beating it up, followed by a coat of Dark Walnut stain, a light coat of MMS Milk Paint in Lucketts Green, followed by distressing, and finished with Antiquing Wax. Here’s a quick video showing exactly what I did at each step… You can find the tutorial for how

step-by-step dresser makeover

Thank you so much for all of the wonderful feedback on my very first MMS Milk Paint “commercial”.  It was so fun to put together and I was proud of it, but your comments were a confirmation, so thanks! The bar has been set for the second one! Today, I thought I would share more about the dresser makeover and how we made the commercial.   I was always planning to paint the dresser in Mustard Seed Yellow, but I only picked out the dress to create the “story” for the commercial the morning we filmed it.  I also decided that day to shoot outside instead of in the studio…another decision that ended up being perfect. The feel would’ve been totally different if it was inside. We’re fortunate to have this amazing old mill right across the parking lot from the studio, so we could literally wheel the dresser over

the yellow dress & the dresser

I took a big step today. I’ve been talking about making a “commercial” for the MMS Milk Paint line for a long time.  Over a year at least.  When I talked about it in my brainstorming sessions, it seemed easy.  When it actually came time to make one, it seemed hard.  And I kept pushing it down the priority list, waiting for the “perfect time.” I’ve always let my business grow organically and I’ve liked it that way.  I don’t push too hard for something.  I let things happen naturally.  The problem with that is, I never felt the need to set out a plan or specific goals.  It’s time to be more strategic. A part of that was moving my idea of making a MMS Milk Paint promotional video to the top of the list.  Finally, today, Kriste and I filmed it. My concept for the video was to
