how things change

When I have trouble with decorating a room, I don’t ignore it.  I don’t shut the door and focus on rooms I do like.  Instead, I decorate and redecorate and redecorate to the point of  ridiculousness until I get it right.  The best example of that is my bedroom.  Since I’m walking you through the current makeover, I thought I would share how it’s changed over the 6+ years we’ve lived in this house.  (My husband says I need a picture of him pulling his hair out somewhere in this post, but I never took one of those…) This is what it looked like when we moved in…      The mauve walls and border were there when we bought the place and the red and yellow fabric was a carryover from my last house.  The furniture pieces were mostly freebies and yard sale finds.  To help you with the

Fabric Wall Treatment

Today was a jam-packed DIY filled day and I have pretty pictures to show for it…   I got my fabric yesterday and I couldn’t wait to play with it…well, work with it.  It is my job after all.  This project was something I wanted to do anyway, but it was for an HGTV.com tutorial, so it got bumped up the list.  Don’t ask me how I did this project, yet.  I wrote a full tutorial and it will be available soon (a few weeks probably) and I’ll link to it when it’s live. So, can you start to see my vision come to life from the bones of the room I showed a few weeks ago?              I love how the wall treatment works with the bed.     …and the chandelier is just waiting patiently on the chair that’s waiting patiently as

chandeliers, boxwood, fluff & stuff

This post is a little blog buffet of a bit of this and that of my day.  Enjoy the randomness…   As I’ve mentioned the past few days, I have a lot of big projects coming up for freelance tutorials.  Some of those projects are tied to others.  (Remember the “decorating is like dominoes” thing?)  For example, two of the tutorials I’m making are on installing a plank ceiling and crown molding, so I’m going to remove the ceiling fan, move the junction box and hang the new chandelier as a part of that project.  So, today, I worked on getting the chandelier ready and while I was working on one chandelier, I might as well work on the other one, right?   This small chandelier above my vanity had sleeves that were too short and they were shiny plastic.  Two things that weren’t working for me.  I bought new

family room reveal

I was going to show how we installed the engineered floating hardwood floors today, but I did a little photo shoot with my family room and I decided I would share the pictures and some of my reasons for picking this floor.    This is how the room looked when we first moved in… We ripped out the fireplace a little over a year ago and I’ve been waiting to rip out this carpet since the day we moved in.  After 6 1/2 years of living in this house, we finally ripped out the carpet and replaced it with 4 3/4″ wide Heritage Hickory (a floating engineered hardwood floor) by Virginia Mill Works.     The color on the walls is Glass Slipper by Benjamin Moore.  I love this color.  It’s a soft blue, but it’s still sort of neutral.   Having wood floors means that all of the furniture

family room organization

Now that our new floors are installed in the family room, I am very motivated to clean up the joint.  Things were so busy for me in 2012 that I really slacked on my usual “stuff control” duties.  I knew I needed to clean out a closet, organize the toys, or get rid of clothes that were too small for the boys, but I would feel pressed to get something else done and I wouldn’t do it.  For some reason, stuff stresses me out.  It might be in a closet, totally out of view, but I know it’s there and I don’t like it. I like the stuff that’s in plain sight even less!     For about a year, we’ve had this toy shelf with locker baskets in the family room.  It’s a piece we built for Cottages & Bungalows magazine and it’s been a great storage piece.  My

A New Look & The Empty Nest

Notice something new? I’ve been working with Reni on a new look for my blog over the past few months and it finally went live last night.  I still have a lot of work to do on the pages, but it’s getting there. Today I went to do a book signing in Warrenton, VA at The Empty Nest.   I met Janet, the proprietress, a few years ago through our blogs.  I never thought I would be signing my book in her shop, so it was a pretty amazing day. Janet also carries my Milk Paint at her shop… …and her son was giving a milk paint demo.  Milk Paint can be a little intimidating, so it’s always nice to take some of the mystery out with a demonstration. Janet also carries ASCP… …and a lot of other beautiful antiques, handmade items and home decor… …and, of course, I bought

milk paint over oil

A common question I’ve been getting lately is, “Can you paint milk paint over other painted finishes?”   Yes, you can!   This little dresser has been hanging around in my basement for a while and, after selling some other pieces, I was forced to work on it.  The delay wasn’t because I didn’t like the piece, but because the drawer bottoms were jacked up and needed to be replaced.  Pieces that need repair often get put on the back burner.  I couldn’t find a before picture of this piece, so here’s the best I could do…   …a snapshot from the Removing Paint Part One video.  It had a few layers of paint, the last one being a white oil based paint that had yellowed and cracked over time.  I removed the paint off the top and painted the base in Mustard Seed Yellow with some bonding agent added,

Painted Empire

I got a call a few days ago from Lucketts  It’s a great call, but an “oh crap” kind of call, too.  Both of my large furniture pieces had sold, so I needed to get some furniture into my space ASAP.  I decided to sell a little wash stand I’ve had for a few years and I finally started working on the empire dresser I had in my basement for a while.  Here’s how it turned out…  Here’s the before…   The wood on the front was really beautiful, but the sides had been painted, so I didn’t feel a lot of remorse about painting this piece.  (Do I ever?)  I layered French Enamel over Flow Blue and used a bit of trickery between to get some clear definition between the coats.                   Can you tell I’m a little in love with
