How to Make Slipcovers – a five part video slipcover tutorial series

A little over a year ago I made a five-part video slipcover tutorial series.  I used a wing chair as an example, but you can take these skills and make a slipcover for any piece of furniture.  I’ve received so many wonderful e-mails and comments from people with all levels of sewing ability who used this series to make their very first slipcover.  Some were even sewing for the very first time. Being able to sew a slipcover is one of the best skills to learn when it comes to buying (or accepting free) used upholstered furniture.  Upholstery can be dated and stained, but the shape of the piece is beautiful and the overall bones and condition are still useable.  A slipcover can give it a new look while addressing those issues.  Slipcovers can also extend the life of a nice piece and tie mismatched pieces together with coordinating fabric.

the most frequently asked question

I get a lot of e-mail and comments asking questions, but the most common one I receive is, “Where did you get your curtains?”  Since I originally posted about them over a year ago (Has it been that long?), I decided to share the tutorial on how to make them again. When I was looking for a fabric about 18 months ago, I wanted a large-scaled paisley print in blue and white.  Well, I didn’t find it, but I found this Waverly print and thought it would read the way I wanted it to.  It was even better and, a year later, I still love them.  They have been the backdrop of many photo shoots and have become a bit of a trademark of my style.      Here is the original tutorial I shared last July… Don’t be scared if you’re new to sewing.  If you can cut, measure,

monogram tea towel pillow

Some of you may have spotted the new Martha Stewart line by Plaid available at Michael’s.  It’s been quite the buzz on the blogs lately.  Several bloggers, including myself, were asked to try out the new products and tools and boy, did we get a big box of goodies to try. Here’s what I made… …a hand painted monogram pillow out of an antique linen tea towel.  (This towel was not in pristine condition, so don’t fret.)  I used the fabric medium and mixed it with equal parts paint.  This hand sponge applicator is ideal for stenciling, so I put it to good use on this project.  A tip when stenciling fabric – make sure to put something under the area you’re painting, so it doesn’t bleed through.  I usually use tin foil.  I then selected my stencils and punched them out.  These are from the Serif Stencil Set.  Using a

Can you help a blogger out?

Alright all of you wonderful readers out there…I need your help.  Remember those mossy green pillows I purchased at TJ Maxx a couple of weeks ago? I used them on my living room sofa and now I want more.  In usual bargain store fashion, though, the ones that I passed by are no longer there.  If you think of it, would you check out your local TJ Maxx or Home Goods to see if there are any available? They are a cotton pillow cover with a feather insert made by Ralph Lauren Home and I think they were $19.99/each. There is a RLL monogram at the bottom right corner. They came in square and lumbar and I would like any they have…well, I only need four more, so if they have twenty, you don’t need to buy all of them.  Please send me an e-mail if you find them and I will

Wordsworth Pillow Tutorial

A few days ago, I got a new toy from Artograph and I couldn’t wait to put it to work.  I’ve been eyeing a light box for a long time, but it was always bumped down the priority list after lenses and sewing machines and other tools of my trade.  My new Artograph LightPad A930 arrived on my doorstep last week and I knew my days of taping things to a window to trace were over.  Can you hear the angelic choir?  I have loads of ideas for how to use this, but I started out with something simple.  A hand painted poetry pillow. I started off by selecting a pillow, fabric, poem and a font.  I chose the very last paragraph of a Wordsworth poem called “Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood.”  I printed it in a free downloadable font called “Jane Austin.”  Once the poem was

Video Slipcover Tutorial Series – Part Four
