Shopping in Orlando – Miss Mustard Seed Style

I can’t travel without doing a little bit of antique shopping, right?  Not only is it my hobby, but it’s my business.  It’s my cross to bear and I must do it.  So, I did my duty on Friday afternoon and checked out a couple of suggestions from my readers.  First up was The French Nest in Orlando.  I was really dumb and didn’t bring my nice camera, so I snapped some pictures with my phone, but they were all blurry and poorly lit and definitely didn’t do this amazing shop any justice.  I stepped through the doors and could hardly even shop, because I was flooded with inspiration and creative sustenance.  The vignettes are breath-taking.  Contrasts, textures, natural elements, sparkles, chippy paint, warm woods, sleek metals…decor heaven.  Not only did the shop look beautiful, but the prices were reasonable and there was a 25% off sale running on everything in the store.  Marsha,

painted cabinets revealed & a video tutorial

First of all, thanks so much to everyone who bore the hardship of going to TJ Maxx to look for pillows for me.  I think they will order more of those pillows after all of the phone calls about them!  You are all such wonderful ladies and I really wish I could hang out with all of you!  Two readers found a total of five pillows.  My goal was to find four, so I am totally set and the hunt is officially over.  Boy, you girls are fast!  However, don’t let me stop you from taking a trip to Home Goods or TJ Maxx.  If you must, you must. Now to what I have been slaving over the last few days. In case anyone was in doubt at all about the power of paint…this post is for you. Here are my kitchen cabinets before… …after… …before… …after… I didn’t get new appliances, counters

Can you help a blogger out?

Alright all of you wonderful readers out there…I need your help.  Remember those mossy green pillows I purchased at TJ Maxx a couple of weeks ago? I used them on my living room sofa and now I want more.  In usual bargain store fashion, though, the ones that I passed by are no longer there.  If you think of it, would you check out your local TJ Maxx or Home Goods to see if there are any available? They are a cotton pillow cover with a feather insert made by Ralph Lauren Home and I think they were $19.99/each. There is a RLL monogram at the bottom right corner. They came in square and lumbar and I would like any they have…well, I only need four more, so if they have twenty, you don’t need to buy all of them.  Please send me an e-mail if you find them and I will

the greatest tool ever made

This post does is not about pretty pictures.  I am tearing my home apart to paint my kitchen cabinets and family room walls and ceiling after all.   I bought some pears today for my next Cottages and Bungalows photo shoot, lined them up on the window sill and snapped some photos.  I just couldn’t help myself. Now that I’ve gotten the pretty picture show-and-tell out of my system, here’s the practical stuff.  For those who don’t know, I am in the process of painting just about every surface in my family room and kitchen.  I’m in the thick of painting the cabinets, now, and there are lots of them.  Fifty one doors to be exact.  Today one of the teenage girls in our youth group came to my house to help me out.  She hadn’t been able to find a summer job, so it worked out well for both of

my farm table & cabinet painting prep tips

I received a few comments about the farm table in my kitchen.  You could see peeks of it in my kitchen accessories post, so here is a full view.  (Ugh…excuse the floor!) I bought it a few months ago at an antique store with every intention of selling it.  I even put a tag on it at one point.  I set it in my living room.  It was totally the wrong size and scale for the space, but I really liked it.  I stained and waxed the top and held onto it to use for the farmhouse chic wedding I styled.  Afterward, I decided to try it in my kitchen, which is not really an eat-in kitchen, but I thought it might work. The size worked perfectly and now there’s a place in the kitchen where my family of four can sit together to eat… …and it gives me a good

grain sacks and other things

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you may have noticed I kinda like grain sacks.  I know some people are so over them and it’s not every one’s “thing”, but it’s my thing.  I love the look.  I love the idea of repurposing something that was used in a utilitarian way years and years ago.  I love that they were patched and monogrammed and dated and lasted all of these years.  They capture so many things I like about antiques and I can’t ever imagine growing weary of them.  If you’re interested in putting a toe into the world of grain sacks, here are some things you should know.  The cost of grain sacks vary greatly depending on condition, origin, fabric, colors…lots of things.  American grains sacks tend to be the least expensive and most readily available here in the US (for obvious reasons.)  I have found thin cotton ones

Lucketts Buys

It’s hard for me to go to an antique market and not buy anything.  At the Lucketts Antique Market a couple of weeks ago, I hadn’t bought anything at the end of day one.  I was too busy at my space to run around and shop.  The Sunday of the sale was more relaxed, plus I didn’t have much left to sell, so I sauntered around and shopped.  A lot of things caught my eye, but here is what I bought… A wooden cog… …an alarm clock… …a linen tablecloth with an embroidered monogram… …a pair of European tea towels and a grain sack… (After I took this picture, I realized the monograms spell “BIKE.”  What are the odds?) …and a few springs.  I’m not sure what I’ll do with these, but I thought it would be a challenge to come up with something creative.  I also bought a couple of wire baskets

I may just burst

I’ve had a lot of fun new things come my way in the past couple of weeks.  I found some great furniture, three large doors that will make amazing signs, some goodies from new sponsors and a very special package all the way from Germany containing these… One of my gracious readers, who lives in Germany, has become a “grain sack picker” for me.  This was the first package I received from her and it was so exciting.  I can’t wait to put these bad boys to work.  (Yes, it’s OK to refer to antique European grain sacks as bad boys.  I checked it out.) My magnetism for cool things continued into my yard sale venture this morning.  My husband prodded me out of bed and rounded up the family for a morning of driving around to “look for treasures.”  I was really considering not going.  I was sleepy and still a
