Lucketts Holiday Open House 2012

Not only is tomorrow the first day of the famous Lucketts Holiday Open House, but it’s also my very first book signing.  I feel sort of nervous about it…well, really nervous about it.  I don’t know what to expect.  I do know that I’m just going to enjoy the ride.  I also know that I am going to be sitting at this table in a beautifully-decorated tent tomorrow at 10:00 am.   I couldn’t have imagined a prettier place.  I love the painted shelf behind and the blue-striped grain sack runner.  Perfect for me.   Yes, I am in a tent in northern Virginia in November, so I will be dressing WARM!  I was going to try to look really cute but I think a sweatshirt will be required.  Oh well, that’s me anyway and I’m going to be sitting behind that table tomorrow because I’ve just been me through

how to make glittery pine cones

This project is simple, but I was so happy with how beautiful and elegant these glittered pine cones turned out that I thought I would share a tutorial on how I made them.     I bought these over-sized pine cones from Hobby Lobby, but you can use freebies collected from your yard or an obliging neighbor. Insert a small screw eye into the woody end of the pine cone.  I just twisted it in with my fingers, but you can use a drill or a small nail to create a pilot hole, if necessary.   I then applied some Elmer’s School Glue with a 1″ wash brush to the tips of the pine cone.  (I have no idea what those things are called and I actually Googled “anatomy of a pine cone” and still couldn’t find the proper name.)   For some crazy reason, I thought, “This must be what it’s

glittery & Sandy

The Lucketts Holiday Open House is next weekend and it really crept up on me.  I usually start making ornaments in September, but I didn’t start until last week this year.  Because of my late start, I’m just making German glass glitter ornaments and won’t be making any of my sheet music ornaments.  In addition to glittered stars, words and pretty shapes, I’m making a bunch of over-sized glittered pine cones.   (My entire dining room is sparkly.)   I’m bringing 25 huge rolls of 2″ burlap ribbon.  This stuff is great for trimming a tree, garland, swags, and making wreaths.  (Oh!!  I bet it would even look cool woven and then sewn into a tree skirt or a stocking lined with cotton…hmmm…)   I’m also selling some beautiful Christmas cards by Jennifer Carrol Designs.   When I was shopping last week I found an adorable antique berry tote that is perfect to

Glitter Crown Tutorial

German Glass Glitter makes almost anything better.  Well, except maybe not cheesecake.  Yes.  I can say with certainty that German Glass Glitter would not improve cheesecake one bit, but it makes a lot of cheap, plastic things look better.  Take this crown…   It started out as a $2.00 tiara from the birthday party section at Target.     I want to use the crown as a decorative piece, something a little whimsical and sweet for the holidays, so I plucked off the combs, so it would sit flat.     They pop off pretty easily.   I then removed the purple jewels, again, just popping them off with my fingers.   Your fingers can get pretty raw after repeating the jewel-popping and comb-plucking on four crowns, so I suppose gloves or pliers might be of use when doing a ton of these.     Ah.  It already looks better…

Christmas in May & an Amazing Sky

I wrote an entire post and then I posted it and the content vanished.  Argh!!  So, take two.  This weekend has been pretty low key and uneventful.  I have some Christmas freelance projects due this week, so I’ve been working on those over the last few days.  I have one more to finish up tomorrow.  My poor boys.  They were outside swimming in our kiddie pool today in almost record high temperatures and then came inside to me hanging stockings.  “Mommy, why are you decorating for Christmas?”  That’s a good question and one that’s hard to explain to a five year old.  They are getting used to the decorating and redecorating that is a pretty regular thing in our house. One project I photographed today is perhaps one of my favorite Christmas projects ever. I can’t wait until it’s published.  Here’s a sneak peek until then… Even though I’ve been working

Pinwheel Tutorial

I posted these last week and was asked by several for a tutorial. I aim to please, so here it is! This tutorial is really from Mini Mustard Seed aka “Mini” aka Charlene. She’s my babysitter/nanny and helps me out with my business during busy seasons. She’s super crafty, so she makes most of my glitter letters and helped out a ton with the Christmas ornaments last year.  She brought a paper folding book home from the library one day and we both immediately spotted the pinwheel.  Sheet music…glitter…let’s mustardize these pinwheels. We’ve since made some out of vintage division flashcards, scrapbook paper and a vintage “Dick & Jane” book. (The Dick & Jane book ones are so cute, because of the soft colors.)   Here’s how to make your own… Supply list: 5/16″ dowel rod paper scissors paper cutter (optional) Elmer’s glue 1/2″ artist brush hot glue gun and

Thanksgiving in April?

Working in both the retail world and the magazine world make the seasons a jumbled mess in my house. You would not believe how sad it is when your four year old gets excited at seeing a Christmas tree only to crush his hopes by telling him it’s still September and it’s just for mommy’s work.  Devastating.  Anyway, last week I had to finish a project for Thanksgiving, which was a little strange when the daffodils are blooming and I have spring-cleaning fever.  You’d think I’d be used to it after doing it for a few years, but it’s still a little bizarre to me. I enjoyed it, though, and here are some pictures from the shoot… I mixed mercury glass, fine china and silver with natural elements like pine cones, feathers and a rattan place mat.  I love using contrasts like this.         I’m just a little bit

simple spring project from Matthew Mead

You know from my post a few days ago that I am not big on holiday decor. I like it when it’s simple, no fuss and classy. Today, I have Matthew Mead here to share a Spring/Easter project that fits into all of those categories.  Here’s Matthew… WHITE RABBIT SILOUETTES WITH CARNATION COTTON TAILS I love simplicity and when it comes to celebrating Easter I found that the most simple touches make me happy and keep the décor streamlined. This year we created these easy to make rabbit silhouettes to dress up dining tables, windowsills, mantles and more. All you need is the template, some paper, scissors and white mini carnations from the supermarket. Download the template HERE. (I also found some cute rabbit vector images on Shutter Stock HERE.)  Large for table and mantle focal points or small for place cards. Double sided matte brochure paper Scissors Single hole
