drying whole limes for decoration

It all started when I was shopping on a couple of months ago, deciding which artificial garlands I wanted to purchase to add to my Christmas decor this year.  Since they often sell out of their most popular items before we even hit the Christmas-decorating season, I wanted to shop early and take my time making intentional purchases.  As I was perusing the site, I came across this wreath made with some of their products and I had to stop and admire it.  I loved the combination of textures, the blue berries of the juniper sprigs, and the use of pinecones, dried limes, and a simple velvet ribbon.  I would love to make something similar for my kitchen. As a side note, I found a lovely and inexpensive velvet ribbon that comes in a couple of widths and over 30 colors .  It’s under $10 for 25 yards. So, I

christmas decorations | new buys & old favorites

While I am excited about decorating for Christmas this year, I’m definitely not ready to start decorating.  I recognize that social media has joined retailers in the push to rush into the next season and there is understandably a lot of resistance to that.  We’re still enjoying fall leaves, making soup, and the early days of wearing sweaters and we’re not ready to set up the tree and go Christmas shopping.  So, I’m not sharing this post as a call to start decorating.  I decided to share this post now since I’m sure I’m not the only one who is thinking through Christmas decorating and what I might want to make and/or add this year.  You can view this post as a chance to do a bit of browsing, considering, and planning so when you’re ready to decorate, you’re ready! For the past three months, I have been purchasing a

fall baking with Walmart

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Walmart and contains affiliate links.  As always, all words and opinions expressed are honest and my own. As the chilly weather has started to show up more consistently, I find myself in the mood to do some baking.  I actually really enjoy baking, but I don’t do it very often since I also like to eat baked goods!  But, baking a dozen apple cinnamon muffins seemed like a pretty safe bit of fall baking and I knew my family would enjoy them. When we renovated our kitchen, I made a note of a few pieces of baking gear that needed an update.  I also checked my baking supplies to replace any ingredients that were low or passed their expiration date.  Of course, I shopped for any replacements or additions.  I put together a grocery order on (or app from my phone) a couple of

fall entertaining with Walmart

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Walmart.  As always, all words and opinions expressed are honest and my own. Last week was the first week that felt like fall and it was glorious.  I mourn that the pool has become a polar bear swimming experience, but that is about all I’ll miss about summer.  I love it when cooler weather comes in and I can don my hoodies and slippers.  I also love decorating during fall and winter perhaps more than any other season. I don’t do a ton of specific holiday decorating, but I love seasonal decorating with elements that speak to that season as well as natural items. I did a bit of shopping on Walmart to find some new items to mix into vintage and antique finds as well as some natural seasonal elements.  I usually show finished tables, but I thought it would be fun to

decorating with shells in the garden

I have loved collecting shells since I was a little girl.  Anytime we went to the beach, my Oma and mom would take walks and collect lady’s ears, olive shells, whelks, sand dollars, and whatever caught their eye.  I remember shells drying on the deck railing of the beach house and we would spend a quiet evening or rainy afternoon making animal sculptures out of some of the found shells.  When we cleaned out my Oma and Opa’s attic after my Opa passed away, we found about 10 five-gallon buckets filled with shells she had collected over the years.  I kept some, but couldn’t possibly keep them all.  Also, searching for the shells and making memories while doing it is a big part of the appeal.  So, I’ve carried on the shell-collecting tradition whenever I’m at a beach that permits it.  (It is illegal to collect shells, rocks, sand, beach

thrifted teak patio lounge chairs

When I shared the ironstone breadbox last week, I teased that I found something even better during my next outing to some thrift and antique stores.  What I found wasn’t as rare, but it’s something I’ve been hunting for and I scored big time. My mom and I have been enjoying going out together to check out some local antique, thrift, and second-hand stores lately and we’ve had such a good time!  We have both found some treasures and we simply enjoy spending time together now that we’re 40 minutes apart instead of 20 hours!  On this particular day, we hit an antique store (Memory Lane Antiques in Hagerstown) and then went to the Salvation Army, which is practically next door.  I hadn’t been to this thrift store, but I had heard good things about it and the parking lot is always full and hopping!  A swarm of locals is

front garden plans | 1970 home renovation

When we tell people that we moved to Maryland from Minnesota, the first thing they mention is the winters.  “Oh, I bet you’ll enjoy these winters a lot more!”  Well, actually, no.  I’m one of those rare people who prefer the cold.  I am pale, blonde, with light eyes, and I just melt in the heat.  I turn beet red, I burn, I break out in hives, and too much heat makes me feel nauseous.  I’m already missing the snow.  But, I am looking forward to having a longer growing season and a wider variety of plants when it comes to gardening.  Gardening in Minnesota was hard for me!  We had some particularly harsh winters that killed even hearty boxwood bushes.  Since I broke my gardening baby teeth just about 40 minutes away from here at our former PA house, I feel like I can make a pretty good go

Christmas decorating favorites from the past

Well, I played hooky from writing on the blog yesterday.  I felt lazy, tired, and really ready for my own Christmas break to start (the boys are already on break from school.)  So, I took a slow morning to cuddle with the kitties and rewatch some of Portrait Artist of the Year.  I gave myself a little bit of space with an unstructured morning.  And, an interesting thing happened…  I started to get an energy to create.  I completed two paintings, flitted around the dining room hanging plates and antlers, did some pen and ink sketches, and even started an art class.  It was just what I needed.  So, I have decided to quit fighting the urge to start my Christmas break and I’m going to start it.  For my final blog post before Christmas and New Year’s, I thought I would share a few of my favorite Christmas decorating
