Cleaning & care

a slice of life

leather boots & linen aprons

If you’re observant, you may notice I have a favorite pair of boots.  They are my go-to for events, photo-shoots, videos, church, tooling around, etc.  Basically any time I need to wear “real clothes”. They are the Deerfield boots from LL Bean and Jeff bought them for me for Christmas a few years ago.  They don’t carry the exact style any longer, but they offer a few that are similar.  Anyway, they are comfy and they just get better with age. I honestly don’t mind that they are scuffed and wrinkled, but I figured they could use a little TLC. Kriste wrote a post for the MMSMP blog about hydrating and polishing her leather booths with our Hemp Oil and 100% Beeswax Finish.  Her boots looked amazing and I happened to have both products on hand (duh), so I tried it on my favorite boots. Believe it or not, I

progress on the craigslist counter

I did some work on the craigslist counter last week and I thought I would share how it’s shaping up. Now, I’ll be honest…I was planning on painting it. The wood was looking really red, the finish has some unsightly paint splatters, it was really dirty, and it seemed like such a massive black hole with how dark it was. But, I stripped a section of the side, I painted a swatch on the side and the back, and I even painted one drawer.  It just wasn’t working for me.  The paint was flaking a lot and I didn’t like the contrast of the dark wood and the pale gray paint.  I also felt like the piece might look ordinary painted. So, I took a step back and decided to give it a little spa day.  Buff it out, oil it up, and see how I felt about it then.

cleaning a grubby piece of furniture

I have recently acquired quite a few awesome, but very dirty pieces of furniture and I’ve been asked how I clean them, so I thought I would share. I’m all for diving in with a brush and getting straight to the fun part, but grubby pieces really need to be cleaned first. (Just a note before we get started. This post is about cleaning pieces, not about dealing with chipping lead paint.  The pieces we worked on had old, worn paint, but they were not actively chipping.  For details on working on a piece that you think may contain lead paint, visit the EPA’s website.) So, the first step is to call your mom, who is amazing at cleaning and is a very hard worker and ask if she can clean a couple of pieces of furniture for you. Just kidding.  My mom actually did clean these pieces for me,

how to fix “sticky” drawers

Have you ever had words with a piece of furniture that just would not cooperate? Well, I had to have a few words and get physical with this bottom half of a step-back cupboard yesterday.  The drawers that came out of it, so they could be cleaned, just would not go back in.  And, when I tried to force them in, they wouldn’t come back out.  This resulted in lots of grunting and “good griefs” and using my feet to steady the piece as I pulled with all of my might. Unless you’re a furniture dealer, I bet most of you haven’t had a piece this extreme, but you might have come across a few drawers that are sticky and stubborn. Here is how I fix them… #1 I figure out where the drawer is sticking.  This is sometimes easier said than done and can take a bit of trail and

using & caring for silver every day

A couple of years ago, I decided I wasn’t going to keep my pretty things hidden in cabinets and drawers.  I was going to either use them or let them go.  Since I didn’t want to get rid of it, I decided I would use the silver pattern I inherited from my mom, Oma, and both great-grandmothers as our everyday flatware.  Since I’m often asked I thought I would share about using and caring for silver every day. There are moments when I cringe at how expensive each piece is, but then I remember that is all the more reason to use it. We use it just like any other flatware, but we do have two “rules”. #1 | Using & caring for silver every day | We wash it by hand most of the time.   It can go in the dishwasher, but there is some debate as to whether

how to clean old bottles

Before I get going, I wanted to let those who have been waiting for hemp sheets know that I just got a shipment in today!  I will list them in the online shop on Thursday, July 14, at 8:00 pm EST along with some other recent finds. I shared on my “favorites lately” list that I’ve found an affection for old bottles.  I was never really into them before, but all it takes is meeting one bottle I really like and then the hunt is on for more! When I was shopping with my mom last week, at one store, I bought five pieces of furniture and a $2.00 “table relish” bottle. While I haven’t been a big bottle collector, I did learn the trick to cleaning them a few years ago when we went through my Opa’s attic.  He had tons of old bottles and most of them were cloudy and dirty

using old quilts every day

I definitely have a thing for old textiles.  I love table linens, fabric, clothing, embroidery, quilts…you name it.  I’m always drawn to the “linen lady’s booth” in antique stores.  I like to look through the stacks to see if anything catches my eye.  I’m usually looking for blue and white, of course, nubby linen, pretty monograms, crochet trim…things that will compliment the decor of my home, but also pieces that I can use as-is or repurpose.  Because what is the point of having stacks of linens if you don’t ever use them? True, a stack of linens can look pretty in a cabinet, but did you know linens can get stained as much from not being used as they can from being used?  That’s a totally unscientific statement, but I have observed that they can turn yellow from starch, acquire “dust lines” at the folds, or fade in the sun.  So, use

the easiest furniture makeover ever

I spotted this piece on craigslist and I knew, despite the missing knob and dry finish, that it was a real gem. Painting is my natural tendency, but this piece spoke to me loud and clear…  I just need a drink!  (Not that kind of drink. Although, I have heard of using vodka to clean stinky furniture, but I’ve never personally tried that one!) What it needed was hydration. The old finish had worn away, leaving the pretty old wood looking faded and tired.  The top had quite a few water rings and marks, so I thought it might need to be sanded, but I was concerned about losing the patina this piece has earned over more than a century.  I decided to rub a corner of the top with Hemp Oil and it woke up! Well, good morning, handsome. Some of the rings and marks would still show through, but I didn’t
