Arrival & Burford | “gateway to the Cotswolds”

The first delight of our trip came when we boarded the airplane from Washington Dulles to London Heathrow.  As we’re walking through the first-class cabin, it’s hard not to look over the cubicle and wish we had tickets for one.  Oh, to be able to lie flat in an airplane seat on an international flight.  It would be such a treat.  But we were prepared to shimmy down the aisle to basic economy.  We passed the next cabin, with wide seats and generous legroom.  I thought, “I would take that in a heartbeat.”  As I’m looking at our seat assignment and the numbers on the rows, I slowly realized we were sitting in that section!  I thought they had bumped us up, but after reviewing my tickets again, I had booked World Traveler Plus on this leg of our trip.  I’m really not sure how I did that since the

packing art supplies for international travel

I’ve been bringing along art supplies when I travel for the past few years.  When I went to China in 2017, I had a vision of standing on the Great Wall and capturing the experience in a sketchbook.  I was nervous about it, but I did it!  The sketch was rubbish, but I learned that it wasn’t about the results.  It was about the process, about being fully present, and taking time to observe.  (You can read the post about that HERE.) Since then, I have always brought art supplies with me when I travel.  Both times I visited Europe, I made a point to set aside time to sketch and paint.  Again, I didn’t end up with anything I was particularly proud of, but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I’ve always just brought along supplies for sketching and watercolors, though, because they are easy to pack and travel with.

Europe shopping list 2025

Before my last two trips to Europe (in 2018 and 2019), I made a shopping list of things I wanted to look for.  I thought it would help me focus when I felt like buying everything!  It also gave us specific destinations to visit, which is always a great way to get off the touristy trails and experience a city.  It becomes like a treasure hunt.  And yes, when you travel with me, I will look at my map and say it’s just a short walk, and then we’ll proceed to go on a two-hour meandering trek to the Louvre.  My mom sent me a meme last week that pointed this out. On our first visit to Paris, we went to E. Dehillerin, Julia Child’s favorite cooking supply store, so that I could purchase a copper pot.  (You can read about that experience HERE.)  I also wanted to find an

my capsule wardrobe for Europe

I leave for England in less than a week, and I thought I would share the clothes I pack for a trip like this.  Most days, I am a sweats & hoodie girl.  It really is my uniform.  I often work on potentially messy projects, so I prefer not to wear nice clothes.  I also like to be comfortable!  I mean, I’m at home, so why not?  But when I travel, I want to make an attempt at looking stylish.  I still want to be comfortable, though, and I’ve learned over the years that the perfect combination is a loose linen dress and a pair of leggings.  That’s what I wear to antique markets, on day trips, and it’s what I wore on my last two trips to Europe. It’s nice enough to wear to dinner in a restaurant or a museum, but it’s comfortable enough to sleep in on

IOP Shell Collection Competition 2025

It started on whim in 2022 when my mom and I noticed the differences in our preference for the type of shells we collect.  Most of her shells were dainty, intact, and there was a wider variety of colors represented.  My shells tended to be larger, mostly shades of gray, and had more “character.”  (Meaning they were broken and looked like they had been rolling around in the surf for several years.)  We joked about my “antique shells” compared to her more traditionally beautiful shells and my ever-competitive mom suggested we put the collections to a vote.  Which collection did my Instagram followers prefer?  My mom’s collection won pretty handily and since that spur-of-the-moment Instagram vote, she has been borderline intolerable to be around any time the shell collection competition is mentioned.  Last year, she ever started telling strangers on the beach about her victories. After all of her unsportsmanlike

IOP shelling diaries | part two

Every day, whether the weather is sunny and calm or blustery and gray, my mom and I are heading out to the beach to see what gifts it offers to us.  We both love collecting shells, a hobby that started with my Oma (her mom) and we’ve continued.  When we cleaned out the attic after my Oma and Opa passed away, there were about a dozen five-gallon buckets filled with shells.  At the time, we had so much to sort through, so I took some and we threw the rest away.  I wish I had gone through them more carefully, keeping some of the best ones and, of course, any olives.  But, I’m sure I could fill a dozen buckets with my shell collection now and I’m adding to it each year. If you want to know what I do with the shells I find, here are a few posts…

IOP shelling diaries 2025 | part one

I started making little notes after each shelling excursion and I decided to turn them into a blog post series, so you could come along with me for the hunt.  It’s one of the things I enjoy most about being on the beach.  I get to walk while listening to the surf, feeling the sand underfoot, and looking for treasures.  It hits a lot of things I enjoy.  If you’re interested in shelling HERE is a post with general shelling tips and HERE is a guide to specifically shelling on Isle of Palms (IOP.)  I’ll update that again this year since I’ve covered more of the beach.  By the time this week is over, I think I’ll have walked the full length of the island! day one Our first day of shelling was uneventful.  We picked up a few shells here and there, but nothing notable.  We’re staying on a

Join me for a creative lifestyle retreat in Tuscany!

It started with an email in April 2017. Carolyn, the creative force behind Prone to Wander Retreats invited me to teach at one of her retreats in Italy.  Our potential move was just starting to take shape and it seemed unwise to commit to an international trip.  I was interested but kept pushing the possibility down the road.  As providence would have it, Carolyn and I were brought together by Jeanne Oliver for a Mastermind Group in the fall of 2021.  We have been meeting together monthly since then and I’ve gotten to know her as a friend and fellow creative business owner.  When she invited me to teach at her flagship retreat, La Dolce Vita in Tuscany, in the fall of 2025, the timing was finally right. Carolyn invited me and now I am inviting you! The La Dolce Vita Creative Lifestyle Retreat is October 4 – 11, 2025,
