barga quietly captivates

When Dana, the owner of Inspired in Tuscany, first pitched the idea of a creative retreat to me, she sent along some pictures of Tuscany to woo me to that beautiful little corner of the world that seems stuck in time.  I honestly thought the pictures were stock photos from a travel website.  Truly.  They were just too beautiful to be believed.  But, I came to see with my own eyes that she sent me legitimate pictures (that she took herself ) of the actual town where we were going to stay and find rest and inspiration – Barga. It’s a place that is so perfect in its quintessential Tuscan look and quaintness that it smells of a corner of Disney’s Epcot Center or a movie set.  But it’s not.  It’s a real town nestled in the rolling mountains on the upper west side of Italy’s boot. It’s a place

paris mélange

Before we move onto Tuscany, I wanted to write one last post to scoop up a medley of things from Paris that I haven’t written about in other posts.  If you missed any of them, you can catch up on them here… 1820’s Silver Dip Pen The Louvre and Museé d’Orsay The Paris Apartment  The Sweeter Side of Paris Where Julia Shopped I gained 12 lbs in Paris   Wow…that’s a lot of posts for just three days in Paris!  There was so much to share, though, and I wouldn’t do it all justice if I squished everything into three posts.  And even six posts weren’t enough, so here’s the overflow… the biggest bang for the tourist’s buck My mom and I did a ton of walking while in Paris.  Even though we hopped on the metro whenever possible, lots of walking was inevitable and, I must say, enjoyable.  We

I gained 12 lbs in paris

You might think this title would fit better with the post about the patisserie tour, but I didn’t gain 12 lbs on my body…just in my suitcase.  Yes, this post is about shopping! I was looking forward to everything I would see and do while in Paris and a few towns in Tuscany, but I was also anticipating the shopping.   I had money saved, a wish list, stores pinpointed to visit, and even a guided Paris Perfect flea market tour lined up our very first day in Paris.  My suitcase was packed with just the essentials, weighing in at only 28 lbs.  It was so light, it even drew comment from the airport clerk at the check-in desk who questioned if there was even anything inside the mid-sized suitcase. “I’m planning to shop.  It’ll be heavier on the way home.” He laughed and easily slid my bag onto the belt.

where julia shopped

One of the things on my to-do list when visiting Paris was to buy a copper sauce pot, either a useable antique one from the flea market or a new one from E. Dehillerin, the kitchen supply store that was Julia Child’s favorite. The copper at the flea market was mouthwateringly gorgeous, but it was way out of my price range.  Most of the pots were in sets that were thousands of dollars and many of those needed to be re-tinned to be functional.    Beautiful as they were, I decided to wait to purchase a new one. And I am so glad I did.  I found the perfect copper pot… Shopping at E. Dehillerin was quite the experience, though! After a morning cruise on the Seine and a couple of hours at the Louvre, we walked over to E. Dehillerin, which was “just a short walk away”.  Well, it

the sweeter side of paris

Well, I am back home with Jeff and the boys.  I’m a little jet lagged and still a touch nauseous from the long flight and trying to eat when my stomach thinks it’s the middle of the night, but I’m still enjoying the high that comes from visiting beautiful places, experiencing new things, and making connections with people outside of my usual sphere. There is still so much to share!  I have almost an entire journal filled with notes, observations, and details that I was afraid I would forget.  I also have over 2,000 photos to sift through and develop.  Of course, I won’t share them all with you or we’ll likely be ringing in the new year with the final pictures of my trip!  Instead of sharing a full narrative, I’m going to share the experiences that I deem entertaining or interesting, either to those who are taking a

the paris apartment

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Paris Perfect.  I was provided accommodations and services in exchange for posting about my experience.  As always, all opinions are honest and my own. A couple of weeks before my trip to Paris, the plan was to stay in a hotel in the St. Germain area and plan our own schedule.  But then, I got an e-mail from Paris Perfect that changed all of that.  I’m paraphrasing here, but the e-mail said something like, “Do you have accommodations already?  If not, would you like to stay in one of our apartments in Paris?” Let me think about that for the tiniest fraction of a second. “Yes.” Once I said yes and cancelled my hotel reservations, I realized I didn’t know anything about Paris Perfect.  In my excitement, I didn’t even think that this might be a less-than-legit company!  I immediately hopped on the computer

The Louvre & Musée D’Orsay

I really wasn’t planning on going to a museum. I’ve never had a desire or felt the need to see paintings in person until this past year when my interest in studying art has increased. Still, I didn’t want to spend my brief time in Paris strolling indoors, looking at paintings that weren’t really my taste. People who knew me insisted, though. They all but bought the tickets and ushered me there. “You cannot be an artist in Paris and not go to the Louvre.” I relented. The tickets weren’t expensive and we could always “pop in”, see a few things, and then say we’ve been to the Louvre. With that plan in mind, I purchased the tickets online for a quick entry and then I did some research to figure out which paintings we might want to see. My complete lack of knowledge of museums and where which paintings

the 1820’s silver dip pen

Well, I am in Paris and sitting on our balcony overlooking the Eiffel tower as I write this.  There is just no way in the world I can write about all of the events of the past two days in one or two posts.  I think that most of my writing will have to happen when I get home or on the airplane, so I’m not spending precious moments in Europe pecking away at a laptop. But, I do want to pop in here to share small stories and moments from my trip and then I’ll share the entire narrative (well, the parts that I deem interesting) to flesh out these little stories. Today, I am telling about the antique sterling silver dip pen I bought while at a flea market. We went to Marché aux puces de Saint-Ouen and were met there by a Paris Perfect tour guide.  Eric
